Advantage

Good morning – it’s Wednesday, March 29, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
To Blog or not to Blog…
Is there a way to have a living, breathing resume/cover letter that potential employers can read ant any time? There is, and it’s called a blog.
Imagine that you and ten other people are up for a job, you all have similar resumes and cover letters, but you also have 20-30 articles on the industry for which you’ve applied. They don’t. Because you’ve been blogging and they haven’t. But there are some rules you should stick by.
Don’t just blog. Go to networking events, be active within your industry in ways other ways than just blogging. Show that you are engaged in what you’re doing and also comment on other people’s blog but do so in a professional manner.
Blog on a schedule, don’t be haphazard about it. Demonstrate your professionalism by publishing your blog the same amount of times each week, and on the same days.
Be Specific. Writing about an industry as a whole might sound like a great idea, but it’s better to stick with what you really know, rather than combining it with what you’ve read. People within an industry can always tell the difference.
Always be professional. You should blog your opinions about news and events within your industry, but keep those opinions professional. Remember who might be reading your blog. If you disagree with something, state why, without emotion and back it with facts. Never write anything that you don’t want a hiring manager to read.
Blog under your professional name and market it on your resume, cover letter, and any social sites you belong to. Like an artist portfolio, you want potential employers to see your work.
Blogging is one of the best ways unemployed people can demonstrate their knowledge about an industry. By writing about the current trends, it shows employers that you are staying engaged, educated and active. When competition for getting a good job is so tough, blogging can make the difference in your favor.
Nest Issue: The Creative Resume

Kyra Sedgwick won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on the Closer but for the purposes of this article, she stands out because I’d say she is less than 1 degree of Kevin Bacon. You may have heard of the Hollywood game called “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.”
Kevin has acted in so many projects with such great talents (in Flatliners alone he worked with Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Hope Davis) that actors look at whom they’ve worked with and figure out in how many degrees they are connected to Kevin Bacon. I worked on a pilot called Wild Oats starring Paul Rudd who starred in a movie with Jennifer Aniston who starred in a movie with Kevin Bacon. See how it works? While it’s a fun game for actors, it’s a reality for anyone who wants to make it in the entertainment industry–it’s “who you’re connected to.”
A Contact List, is a list of everyone you know in the industry broken down by classification and rated by how well you know each person. There are many uses for this list.
First, just the action of putting it together can remind you of people with whom you’ve been out of touch.
Second, it gives you a perspective. If you’ve been out of work and you have only ten names on your list, you don’t know enough people to hire you. If you know two hundred people but rate them low, you’re missing deep relationships. You now know that an action you need to take is to build those relationships. If you know two hundred people with high ratings and you’re not working, it’s most likely because you’re not asking for help or your attitude is an obstacle.
The list is also useful in getting to the people you want to know. When I hear people say, “It’s all who you know,” it always sounds like a complaint, as if it’s an obstacle. I suppose it could appear to be so if you don’t feel you know the right people.
Here are some ideas for creating a Contact List:
- Design it on a computer in Word, Excel, or another database program
- Make it on a corkboard using pushpins and colored paper
- Draw it on poster board using colored markers
Once you make your Contact List, answer the follow questions to evaluate your contacts:
- In what classifications do you need more relationships?
- With whom do you want to deepen your relationships?
- With whom have you been out of contact? Do you want to get back into contact with them?
Because there are truly “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” in this industry, it is possible to get to know whomever you want. And with all of her own success, I say we start the female version of the game: Six Degrees of Kyra Sedgwick. Who’s with me?

Do bosses assume when I request a performance review, that I am really asking for a raise?
Are you? If you are, then they probably have a good idea because it will reflect in the way you ask. If you’re not, you will most likely tell them why you want the performance review, in which case they won’t assume you’re asking for a raise. So, I’m not really clear why you’re asking this question. If it’s because you want a raise, and a performance review will reflect that you deserve one, then what does it matter if they know? If you feel that asking for a raise will somehow put your job in jeopardy but you still want a performance review on file for the future when it’s a better time to ask, then make it clear when asking that you’re not asking for a raise, simply a performance review. Anything they choose to assume after that is out of your control.
I graduated from college in 2010, and have been applying to positions in TV production since then, via company website; however, I rarely hear anything back. I’ve been told by many people that “applying online is not the way to get a job”, but if you do not know anyone at the company, how else are you supposed to do it? My connections from interning have only taken me so far, and now I am just frustrated and feeling hopeless. College career centers do not prepare students for this.
Applying online is the equivalent of a cold call. This is a small enough business that when a position opens up, the people who know someone are top of the list. Which means, if you are not hearing about jobs, you’re either not living in a market where there is a lot of television production happening or you don’t know the right people.
And you are correct. Most college career centers do not prepare students for this because technically, what “this” is, is business school. You are out there being the CEO of company YOU and if you don’t have the skills to network, sell, and market yourself properly, create a yearly business plan, strategize, and everything else that “business owners” do to generate work, then you will indeed feel hopeless. The good news is, once you have the business tools to generate work in the entertainment industry, not only do you feel empowered, you also have the edge over your competition, who are currently feeling as hopeless as you.
