ABC chose its late-night host Jimmy Kimmel as host for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards which will be broadcast on the network September 23. This marks the first time Kimmel will host the Emmys though he is set to host the White House Correspondents Dinner next month and in the past hosted the American Music Awards and the ESPY Awards.
Retired US Army General Wesley K. Clark will host Edge of War, the new original series on Military Channel premiering April 3 at 10p. The six-episode series takes viewers inside the war rooms and military operations with minute-by-minute storytelling of battles from WWII to Korea and more. Edge of War is co-produced by FB Productions and Military Channel.
New series Fatal Encounters tells stories of victims who collide with killers when the series premieres on Investigation Discovery on April 9 at 10p. Each episode begins with a timeline as the victim encounters the killer as they go about their normal business, unaware of what is to happen. Investigation Discovery ordered a 13-episode first season based on the success of the Fatal Encounters’ pilot in January 2012. Fatal Encounters is produced by Peacock Productions by Investigation Discovery.
Animal Planet welcomes a new weekly series to its lineup featuring the network’s large predator expert, Dave Salmoni in Frontier Earth with Dave Salmoni (wt). The six-part natural history series uncovers the fates of such creatures as killer whales, Komodo dragons, tigers and leopards among others. Also for its Upfront season, Animal Planet has several other new series on the horizon including The Afterlife: Hippo and The Afterlife: Elephant, Wild Arabia (wt), Polar Bear Family and Me (wt), Wild Hawaii (wt) and Swamplands (wt).
Weekly topical program Oppenheimer Presenta joins CNN en Espanol’s lineup starting this Sunday. The program offers in-depth reporting and analysis on current topics relating to politics, economy and society with host and analyst Andres Oppenheimer. The program will air each Sunday at 9p beginning April 1 in the network’s US and Latin America feeds (excluding Mexico).
A second season of T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle was approved by VH1. The new season will premiere in fall 2012 and continues to follow Grammy Award-winning artist T.I. and his R&B wife Tiny as they support their children in their entertainment endeavors. The series is created and executive produced by 51 Minds’ Cris Abrego, Christian Sarabia, Rabih Gholam and Ben Samek (CAPI) as well as Category 5 Entertainment’s Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov.
Beginning this week, Sportsman Channel launches a batch of new programs and brings back others during second quarter:
- Pure Hunting hosted by Willi Schmidt follows his quest to discover the last and best Pure Hunting adventures in America. Series airs Wednesdays at 8p and 11p and Fridays at 8a.
- Fish TV follows host Leo Stakos and Ron James as they entertain and guide viewers to the best fishing destination hot spots. Series airs Mondays at 1130a, Wednesdays at 3a and Sundays at 1130a.
- Working Man’s Retriever with host Don Hosford instructs bird hunters how to train their own gundog. Airs Tuesdays at 6a, Thursdays at 4p and Saturdays at 3p.
- Bullets & Broadheads follows the Hendrick family each week for action-packed and challenging hunts across Texas in this new series. Airs Thursdays at 8a, Fridays at 4p and Saturdays at 130p.
- Force on Force watches each week as military teams from each branch (Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines) battle in a military-style platoon level operation to compete in a 6-hour tournament. The competition will eventually crown one team as the 2012 Force on Force Champion. Airs Mondays at 9a, Saturdays at 830p and 1130p.
- BDC World Championships features host Charley Jurney and expert Tournament Hunter Mark Hillman as they offer details of the Finals at The Patternmaster Bird Dog Circuit World Championships. Airs Wednesdays at 7a, Thursdays at 630p and Saturdays at 430p.
- Point Blank Outdoors is a reality sportsman show where hunting and fishing for fun is highlighted. The series is shot in full hi-def and airs Tuesdays at 12p, Wednesdays at 630a and Saturdays at 6p.
- Returning series for Sportsman Channel include Wild Fish Wild Places for a second season; Trout Unlimited: On the Rise in a fifth season; Ultimate Catch in a fourth season; Fly Fishing the World in a second season with a new host; FlatsClass in a sixth season; a second season for Dr. Deer; and a second season of Bear Whisperer.
Sunday’s fifth season opener of Mad Men on AMC with a two-hour premiere chalked up record ratings making it the most-watched episode ever for the series. From 9p to 11p, AMC attracted 3.5 million total viewers as well as 1.7 million among A25-54 and 1.6 million with A18-49. Mad Men airs Sundays at 10p on AMC.
This past weekend’s #1 movie at the Box Office, The Hunger Games was acquired by ABC Family in a network television premiere rights deal with Lionsgate. The deal also includes the network television debut rights to Catching Fire, the second movie in The Hunger Games franchise. The agreement gives ABC Family the rights to be the basic cable home for the first two movies of The Hunger Games franchise and the movies will air on ABC Family in 2014.
International distributor Entertainment One (eOne) acquired global rights to the Canadian feature documentary The Captains, written and directed by William Shatner. The feature follows Shatner, who played Captain Kirk on the classic series Star Trek as he finds the other actors who have played the role of Starship Captain in the Star Trek franchise. The documentary features Sir Patrick Stewart, Chris Pine, Avery Brooks, Scott Bakula and Kate Mulgrew. The Captains is produced by Le Big Boss Productions in association with Ballinran Entertainment, 455 Films and Love Lake Productions with Movie Central, a Corus Entertainment Company; The Movie Network, an Astral Media Network; Les Chaines Tele Astral, a division of Astral Broadcasting Group, U.S. premium channel EPIX and the participation of the Canada Media Fund, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit and the Ontario Media Development Corporation Film and Television Tax Credit.

A fifth season has been ordered for the original UK series version of Being Human by BBC America. The fifth season of Being Human, written and created by Toby Whithouse will have six episodes and has been commissioned by BBC America as well as BBC Three in the UK for next year. Being Human is produced by Touchpaper Wales, a Zodiak Media Company for BBC Cymru Wales and BBC America. The series’ fourth season is currently airing as part of BBC Americas Supernatural Saturday programming block.
Reality producer A. Smith & Co. Productions with Level 1 Entertainment forged a deal to develop and produce an untitled docu-series highlighting boxing champ Paulie Malignaggi. The series will take a look inside the life of professional athlete Malignaggi as he juggles his love life, boxing and business.
Known for his film roles in Dances with Wolves and Twilight saga’s New Moon, Graham Greene was cast in Syfy’s futuristic drama series Defiance, reports THR. Greene will play Rafe McCawley, a self-made man who owns and operates the largest mine in the territory and is also the most powerful person in Defiance. The series is from Syfy and Trion Worlds.
Casting Call: Emmy Award winner Hedda Muskat is ready to cast a male wimp, geek or nerd for a new show on the FOX-owned network, FUEL TV. Mayhem Miller stars in the program where he will take a guy with a scrawny body and turn him into a man. Auditions are happening this Saturday in Los Angeles. Friday A18-49 Analysis: CBS scored a win Friday at 2.9/9 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ NCAA Basketball Championship game between Xavier vs. Baylor won narrowly at 1.6/6 while ABC’s Shark Tank and Univision’s Una Familia con Suerte tied for #2 at 1.5/5 each. CBS’ continued NCAA Basketball Championship action did best at 9p with a 1.6/6 and ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? was a close second place at 1.6/5.
