3/27/07

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The American Idol Results Shows typically are expanded to an hour as we get down to the wire, but this year that expansion will happen about a month ahead of schedule.  Beginning with the April 11th Results Show, originally scheduled for the standard 30m format, will now run an hour. The switch was to make sure that the departing near-Idol had his or her chance to sing a farewell tune.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: The Great American Dream Vote at 10p
A&E:  Driving Force at 10p
Univision: Nuestra Belleza Latina at 10

Tonight’s Finale:
FX:  Dirt at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Broadcast network primetime schedule changes:

  • Veronica Mars returns to the CW lineup for the May sweep on May 1st at 9p and One Tree Hill returns on May 2nd at 9p.  Both had been temporarily bumped for the Pussycat Doll competition series.
  • Men in Trees returns to the ABC lineup on Thursday, April 12 at 10p, stepping into the time period for October Road which will have just completed its scheduled run. ABC had originally ordered six episodes of October Road, tho reports now are that these final two episodes will mark the beginning of season #2 when and if the show returns next season. Lest you think that sounds like a bad thing, remember this – both Grey’s Anatomy and The Practice did the same thing and it seemed to work out for them!

The next season of MTV‘s Punk’d kicks off on April 7 with a Sneak Peak Marathon of the full and final season, and then in a standard weekly format starting April 10 at 9p.  This will be Punk’d last season.  I know, that sounds like a rerun, but Brian Graden, Prez/MTV Networks Music Group said this truly was the final season. The season will also include the Punk’d Awards with Ashton Kutcher hosting and honoring all eight seasons of the series. That special is scheduled for June 5 at 9p.

Beginning its second year, the 24-hour Documentary Channel (DOC) has established a new Advisory Council of recognizable names involved with documentary filmmaking to offer programming support and guidance to the network. The council will include Ken Burns, Al Maysles, Freida Lee Mock, Barbara Kopple and Haskel Wexler. In addition, the network expects to reach 30 million subscribers by the end of this year. When DOC launched in January 2006, it started with more than 13 million household subscribers through EchoStar’s DISH Network. DOC also produces several original series which include:

  • Treasures of the Academy – showcasing the Oscar-winning and nominated documentaries from the Archives of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Interviews with filmmakers will also be incorporated. This series compliments DOC’s annual series of Oscar’s Picks which airs close to the Academy Awards telecast.
  • DocTalk@USC – a monthly series which interviews documentary filmmakers featuring Mark Jonathan Harris, head of the documentary division at USC. USC students work on the production alongside DOC technicians.
  • DOC-U – centers on student filmmakers and programs offered at the various film schools across the U.S. This series also displays student films.
  • HotDocs and DocFest – two series that focus on new advances in the documentary industry and the festival circuits.

Trifecta Entertainment and Media has just cleared Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild in 60% of the U.S. for a fall 2007 launch. The weekly 30m show will air on such station groups as ABC, Belo, Capitol, CBS, Fox, Gannett, Hearst, Meredith, NBC, Raycom, Wiegel and Young.

With the return of the Cynopsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series, coming in July, also comes comes this offer:

Psst, hey buddy … wanna earn a quick $350 bucks?  This is easy – if you’re currently a college student, all you have to do is write a 350 word essay about television – anything at all about television that appeals to you, or disappoints you, or makes you laugh, makes you tune in or tune out.  Whatever you want – just make sure it’s about TV.  Then, send it to me at [email protected] Subject: Cynopsis Weekender College Edition, and be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted.  The top four will be published in the special Weekender edition on April 26,

Cynopsis Weekender College Edition.  Deadline is April 20th at midnight – Good luck!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

R. Lee Ermey has signed a new multi-year contract with The History Channel which will increase his exposure on the network. In addition to being host of Mail Call in its eighth season, R. Lee will work with the network to develop a new series and specials as well as expand his presence on the network’s web sites history.com and military.history.com.

E! Entertainment Television picked up the rights to U.K. network ITV‘s Katie and Peter celebrity reality show.  Debuting on U.S. soil on April 21, the 22+ episode series will air as either a 30- or 60-minute run.  The reality show follows the U.K. celeb couple of model Katie Price and singer Peter Andre.  The two first met when they starred in the British I’m a Celebrity! Get Me Out of Here series.

Joining the lineup of Fox‘s drama pilot Company Man from Realtime Prods and 20th Century Fox TV is Jason Behr in the lead role.  The role had originally been cast with Stephen Moyer, but the script was reworked and the lead re-cast, making the lead character much younger than originally planned.

Heather Locklear will play the title role in ABC‘s comedy pilot See Jayne Run from Brillstein-Grey TV And ABC TV Studio.  The story revolves around Jayne, a stock broker and mother, attempting to balance career and being a parent.

There’s a lineup change in the Monday Night Football huddle – Joe Theismann will not be participating in the booth this year for ESPN.  Rather, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski will be stepping in, and sitting next to Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser.  Theismann will stay with the network in a different role.
