ABC.com launched a new original series based on ten years of funny, rambling voicemail messages. Voicemail consists of fictionalized video vignettes from the life of Mike (co-creator Michael Wilde), a slacker-type who tries to avoid confrontation, work and any modicum of responsibility. ABC will roll out 30 one-to-four minute webisodes through mid-June, viewable from the ABC.com video player or the dedicated site  http://abc.go.com/primetime/voicemail/index . ABC is conducting a viral marketing campaign to promote the series, its first without an on air component, making webisodes available on other community sites such as YouTube and MySpace. The three episodes now online have been downloaded over 600,000 times since late last week, according to ABC.

MTV Networks has added three new original series crated exclusively for mobile. I Remember Chloe, Dances from the Hood, and CMT’s Radio Sessions bring MTV Mobile’s docket of original shows to two dozen.

The Onion launched its 24-hour fake news video network yesterday, created by online marketing firm Deep Focus. Link to the ONN promo reel, videos about Condolezza Rice’s voyage to the Middle East or the immigration problem at www.theonion.com . Dewers is sponsoring the festivities.

Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey, star of Mail Call, signed a new multiyear, multiplatform deal with The History Channel that will increase his exposure on history.com and military.history.com. Mail Call, currently in its 8th season, still revolves around Ermey (Full Metal Jacket) answering questions about military hardware and the evolution of combat technology submitted from www.history.com/mailcall. New features to the site will include a sound board glossary, where users can hear the famous drill sergeant shouting terms and click on them to read their definitions.

The NFL may bar video taping of weekly coaches’ press conferences as well as taping of interviews at practices during the upcoming season, according the Sports Business Journal. The issues are to be discussed at the NFL owners meetings this week in Phoenix.

The Tivo platform has added another interactive plug in, a home video sharing component featuring uploaded content from www.OneTrueMedia.com . Users can upload home made video montages of friends and family onto the site then port it to their “Now Playing” list through a broadband-enabled Tivo. The site, a video version of sites such as shutterfly.com, features several easy-to-use editing features allowing users to add music, insert text slides and build in transitions and special effects.

TVGuide’s online division will begin testing a new site next month that will provide links to professionally produced programming from broadcasters and cable networks. “Project Stingray,” as it is code-named, will provide indexes and summaries of video content from 55 different programmers’ websites, according to Multichannelnews.com. The video search site will also include user generated content and links to video sharing sites such as NBCU’s iVillage.com and MTVN’s iFilm.com.

Newsrooms at local stations across the country are being asked to pull double duty to produce content for on air and online simultaneously as stations race to compete with local newspapers on the web, according B&C. Journalists are being trained on desktop-based editing and graphics systems in order to repurpose video for the web, RSS feeds, mobile phones and other platforms. NAB will exhibit new easy to use software tools next month such as the Vizrt Multiplatform Suite, which separates graphics from video content for easy distribution to mobile devices.

Twentieth Century Fox signed a deal with Canadian MSO Cogeco Cable to provide new release and classic film titles to its VOD platform. Cogeco also has output deals with Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, MGM, Lions Gate and Alliance Atlantis.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will award Al Gore with the 2007 Emmy Founders Award for his role in launching multiplatform user generated cable network Current TV and spreading the word about global warming.

Cinema advertising company Screenvision will install its high definition digital network system on all 204 Wehrenberg screens, 153 of which are within the St. Louis DMA. The satellite-based system delivers a digital entertainment pre-show of sports, kids and music programming with ads attached. With the Wehrenberg deal, the network now covers 7,200 screens.


Yahoo’s Project Panama is hit with advertisers, according to online ad agency aQuantive. During the software’s first six weeks of operation, click rates on Yahoo ads rose by 10 percent. Panama makes helps advertisers reach potential clients by making search queries on Yahoo’s search engine more relevant.

WE TV announced a multiplatform marketing initiative around its new original series Wife, Mom, Bounty Hunter. It’s designed to generate buzz for the April 20 premier and drive viewers to an interactive game on www.we.tv , featuring the series star Sandra Scott on a bounty-hunting mission. Traditional tactics include radio, spots on local TV, print ads targeting women 18-49 and outdoor.

Google is going after a market which has long been a staple for local TV stationspolitical advertising. The company conducted a seminar this month to educate campaign consultants and advocacy groups on the intricacies of utilizing Google products such as search engine rankings to promote their candidates, according to a report in The Los Angeles Times. Online political ad spending, which only totaled $12 million during the 2004 presidential campaign, is expected to more than double in 2008 as political campaigns try to capture the viral power of the web.


Of the estimated 97 million females online in the U.S., only 66 percent watch videos online compared to 78 percent of males, according to eMarketer. Measuring online video viewers by gender, 71.2 percent are men and 55 percent are women. However the differences begin to decrease over time, according to projections, with only four percentage points separating the two by 2011.


Cablevision named Patricia Gottesman Executive Vice President of the newly formed Digital Marketing & Commerce. The group will work closely with Rainbow Advertising Sales to create new advertising and commerce opportunities in the digital space. It will look to leverage Cablevision’s fiber network, now serving 3 million homes78 percent of which are digital customers, to launch new products such as a linear shopping channel that will enable purchases through the set top box. 

A number of Cablevision and Rainbow Sales executives will join under Gottesman, who herself will report to Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge.

Break.com hired former ABC interactive advertising executive Mike Bender as Director, East Coast Sales. He will work in the newly created position to sign advertising clients for the original video featured on the men’s oriented video sharing site.

ICTV named former Sony Pictures VP and ClickStar CEO Nizar Allibhoy as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the newly created ActiveMedia Group. He will be responsible for developing and supporting programming solutions for ICTV’s interactive ActiveVideo platform, built to bring web functionality to set-top boxes. Nizar will report to Jeff Miller, President and CEO of ICTV.

Presslaff Interactive Revenue hired Steve Zielonka as the company’s new Marketing Specialist. He will be based in Torrance, California and report to President Ruth Presslaff.


I found another good example of using multimedia tools to expand video journalism on the web. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/interactives/chad/ features a report about how the crisis in Sudan is spreading across into eastern Chad. Video and commentary from journalist Travis Fox is enhanced with panoramic photos taken of the stories and subjects and settings. The interface also enables you dig deeper for more in depth news and stories. The video is powered by Brightcove.
