.Nexstar Broadcasting is on the verge of closing a deal to acquire Communications Corp. of America. The company has signed a letter of intent that would give them an exclusive opportunity to acquire CCA’s stations. The deal would up Nexstar to approximately 84 stations and increase its presence in Louisiana and Texas.
Seth McFarlane has barely exhaled together with most of the Oscar audience- but ABC is already announcing the dates of its next two telecasts. The ABC Television Network and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has named the dates for the 86th and 87th Oscars. The 86th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 2, 2014, and the 87th on Sunday, February 22, 2015. The ceremonies will be held at The Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC.
Legendary journalist Tom Brokaw will recount his most prolific NBC News broadcasts in the new Military Channel series The Brokaw Files. From Ronald Reagan’s final days in the Oval Office to World War II veterans returning to the beaches of Normandy four decades after D-Day, Brokaw will reflect on memorable events and SHARE personal stories. Produced exclusively for the Military Channel by NBC News’ Peacock Productions, The Brokaw Files premieres Thursday, May 30 at 10p.
Paul DiMeo, the carpenter and designer from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, will help baby boomers transform their lives on RLTV’s new series, Second Act. Premiering April 18 at 8p, the show takes adults 50+ and at a critical transition point in their lives and arms them with the tools they need to succeed. DiMeo assesses the participants’ strengths and challenges; then, assembles a team of experts to provide encouragement, advice and assistance to help them move forward with the right know-how and attitude.
Bon Jovi‘s new single, Army of One, will be the theme song for Discovery‘s upcoming nature series North America. “Bon Jovi’s Army of One captures the daring, wild spirit of Discovery’s upcoming television event that presents our homeland as an extreme world all within one continent,” said Eileen O’Neill, Group President of Discovery Channel and TLC. The seven-part series premieres Sunday, May 19 at 9p.
Don’t let the title scare you. Knife Fight, a gritty new cooking competition show, is coming to the Esquire Network. Hosted by Top Chef season 2 winner Ilan Hall, the 10-episode series features underground, after-hours cooking bouts between Los Angeles’ most exciting chefs at The Gorbals, Hall’s downtown restaurant. As the chefs face off, they’re cheered and heckled by a crowd, including friends, neighbors, food professionals and celebrities, who serve as judges and timekeepers for each bout. Among them: Drew Barrymore (who also serves as Executive Producer), Elijah Wood, Jason Lee, Bijou Phillips and Erika Christensen. The show premieres Tuesday, April 23 at 9p.
ABC‘s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire helps celebrate the 50th anniversary of General Hospital by featuring Finola Hughes (Anna) and Jason Thompson (Patrick) as contestants on Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 2. Hughes and Thompson also brought some drama to the set of Millionaire, filming a soap-inspired scene with host Meredith Vieira. The scene will be broadcast on Monday, April 1.
Bravo goes where no network has gone before — deep inside the lives of four newlywed couples and documents their most personal moments over the course of 365 days in the new docu-series Newlyweds: The First Year. The eight-episode series follows each couple and captures everything from their wedding day to their one-year anniversary, chronicling the trials and tribulations that arise as newlyweds. The show debuts Monday, May 6 at 10p.
Seth MacFarlane heads to ABC‘s Shark Tank to support a friend – his horseback riding teacher from Sylmar, CA, who claims he has built a better fly trap. The episode airs Friday, April 12 at 9p.
TV legends Betty White, Ed Asner, Doris Roberts and Fred Willard join baseball legends Steve Garvey, Tim Salmon and Jose Canseco on the Hallmark Channel series Who Let the Dogs Out on Friday, March 29 at 1p. First, Garvey and company head to Angel Stadium of Anaheim for a celebrity softball event to benefit the ALS Association. Then, the gang drives to Dodger Stadium for Bark in the Park, an event where pet owners bring their dogs to the game. Later, the team heads to San Diego for the Petco Foundation Annual Gala where TV legends Betty White and Ed Asner are honored for their commitment to animals. Roberts and Willard also attend.
TV One‘s reality series R&B Divas Atlanta is returning for a second season. The show will premiere on Wednesday, May 1 at 10p.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crackle, a multiplatform digital content hub, has greenlit a second season of Chosen, the original series that starred Milo Ventimiglia. The new season of the action-drama 2ill begin production in the summer.
The National Cable Television Cooperative has signed a master carriage agreement with eScapes Network. The pact provides NCTC members distribution rights to the network, which features videos from some of the most amazing places on earth, set to music and introduced by an on-air personality. Each hour of programming consists of four location-based episodes running uninterrupted by commercial breaks. “Our programming is so new and different; the network has been awarded a US patent.” says Roy Radakovich, eScapes CEO.

Brian Bradley and Steven Cragg, who last served as consulting producers on ABC’s Happy Endings, have inked a two-year overall deal with Universal Television. The duo will develop new projects for the studio. The deal begins in June.
44 Blue Productions has signed an exclusive deal with radio personality and Grammy-nominated performer Angie Martinez, The Voice of New York, to develop concepts for television in association with Principato-Young Entertainment.
Mattel and The Gurin Company have partnered to create UNO: The Game Show, a fast-paced, high-stakes show based on the popular card game. The format will be available as a half-hour daily game show with a $100,000 jackpot and an hour-long primetime version where players compete for $1 million. The Gurin Company has secured worldwide television rights to the game and will be distributing the format at MIPTV in Cannes, France.
3net Studios has begun principal photography on the 3D original series Turn & Burn [wt], a six-episode reality program featuring the antics of El Reyes Garage in Venice, CA., and Dark Secrets, an eight-episode series with fictional recreations of supernatural psychic events. The company is also in the final stages of post production on an all-new season of Hillbilly Blood:A Hardscrabble Life, which is slated for a special 3D/2D simulcast on 3net and Discovery’s Destination America Saturday, April 13 at 10p. On the ultra HD front, the studio has put three new 4K original documentary and natural history series in active development: National Parks Adventure [wt], Metropolis [wt] and Made by Man [wt].
UK factual production house World Media Rights has announced a deal to create the new documentary series War & Revolution. The series will feature never before seen footage from a Russian archive, including film of the Tsar and his family, the Russian Revolution, the civil war, the death of Lenin, and rise to power of Joseph Stalin. World Media Rights is pre selling territory licenses at MIPTV in advance of the 100th anniversary of the commencement of WWI in July 2014.
Debra Messing has landed the starring role in the CBS untitled comedy pilot by Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, formerly of Sex and the City. She’ll play Shira, a married mother who struggles between family and work. Messing will also serve as a co-executive producer on the project.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision led by a slim margin among A18-49 viewers Friday with a 1.6/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s Last Man Standing led the 8 to 8:30p slot at 1.6/6. At 8:30p Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda moved into first at 1.5/5, followed by ABC’s Malibu Country at 1.4/5. Univision’s Amores Verdaderos maintained the top sport at 9p at 1.8/6. ABC’s Shark Tank and NBC’s Grimm tied for second at 1.4/4. At 10p, ABC’s 20/20 and Univision’s Amor Bravio tied at the top at 1.5/5, while CBS’ NCAA Basketball Championship followed at 1.0/3.

Robert Schildhouse is joining CBS Television Distribution as Senior Vice President, Digital Licensing and Distribution. In this newly-created position, Schildhouse will formulate strategies for CTD’s first-run series with new and emerging distribution platforms in the digital arena. Schildhouse joins CTD from Hulu, where he served as co-head of content acquisition for the online video streaming service since 2008.
Dave Hamilton has been named Senior Vice President of Leopard Films USA. He begins his new role on April 8 and becomes the first American to head the New York-based prodco. Hamilton will be responsible for driving the company’s growth plans by building on its successful lifestyle slate and through expansion into new genres, with a strong focus on character-driven docusoap, formats and factual entertainment. Hamilton previously worked at Endemol USA as Vice President of Development.
Entravision Communications Corporation has appointed Javier Ortiz as Vice President of Integrated Marketing Solutions for the Las Vegas, Nevada market. He will be responsible for maximizing traditional and digital advertising while developing new business opportunities for growth in the market. Ortiz, last served as Local Sales Manager of Cox Communications for their Cox Media Group broadcast television stations in San Francisco and the Cox Media cable division in Las Vegas.
Vicki Ariyasu has been named to the newly created role of Executive Director, Disney Junior Educational Resource Group. Ariyasu, a longtime consultant to Disney Junior, will lead an in-house team responsible for the curriculum development and focus group studies of Disney Junior content and brand extensions.
Sales executive Andy Schreiber has joined Peace Point Entertainment‘s distribution division. He will be responsible for bringing the company’s extensive catalogues to the US market including theatrical, television, home video, and digital platform rights, as well as Peace Point’s feature film and scripted catalogue worldwide outside of Latin America. Schreiber previously worked at Fun World Media, a film and television production and distribution company.
