Starz acquired the US rights to air the new 10-episode series Camelot from Ecosse Films beginning the first half of 2011.  Based on the 15th century book Le Morte d’Arthur by Thomas Malory, the series is considered an authentic, definitive look at the Arthurian legend. Graham King (The Tourist, The Aviator) and Tim Headington and Craig Cegielski, president of GK-TV will serve as executive producers along with Morgan O’Sullivan (The Tudors) and James Flynn of Irish production company Octagon and Michael Hirst (The Tudors) and Douglas Rae (Becoming Jane) of UK-based Ecosse Films. Chris Chibnall (Life on Mars, Torchwood) is penning the series. John Weber of Take 5 Productions will also be the Canadian producer. Camelot will be shot on location in Ireland with post-production happening in Canada. Starz acquired the US rights including home entertainment and digital distribution while GK-TV will be involved with the series’ international rights.

Meredith Corporation said its daily lifestyle television series Better is heading into its fourth season this fall on FOX O&Os in Chicago, Houston and Orlando and on Sinclair stations in Pittsburgh, Greensboro and Charleston. LIN TV also renewed Better on ten of its stations and contracts for Better were additionally renewed with such station groups as Belo, New Age Media, Journal and Gray.

Prior to this year’s MIPTV, The Fremantle Corporation has secured several pre-market sales for the miniseries Doc West. The deals include a sale to Grindstone Entertainment for home video rights in North America; a deal with Selectavision for TV and home video rights for Spain and Portugal; and Mediaset in Italy picked up the broadcast rights among other agreements. Doc West is produced by DAP and is distributed theatrically by Tricoast Worldwide. The Fremantle Corporation handles the global television and DVD distribution rights for the miniseries.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Academy Award-winning actress Sissy Spacek takes on the lead role in John Welles’ medical drama pilot for CBS. Spacek will play the intensely-driven visionary leader of a team of mobile volunteer doctors who travel the world and the US helping people in need. Spacek’s part was originally meant to be played by a man and her character’s name switches to Adrianne from Adrian. Warner Bros. Television is producing the project. Recently, Spacek appeared on several episodes of HBO’s Big Love.

Christian Slater landed another leading role on FOX’s untitled Adam Goldberg comedy pilot, per THR. Slater will play the leader of the Titan Team, a group of 20-something geniuses who crack security systems. The pilot also stars Trevor Moore who was cast as the team’s womanizing intelligence head. Slater also serves as producer on the pilot. Most recently, Slater starred in ABC’s drama The Forgotten and before that NBC’s My Own Worst Enemy.

FOX and Conan O’Brien started up talks again about the possibility of O’Brien headlining a late-night talk show for the network. Amid these current talks, O”Brien was also approached to guest star on FOX’s Idol Gives Back special airing on April 21. The two are not related however, as the guest spot offer came from American Idol’s producer 19 Entertainment who is booking several celebrities to appear on the show. Due to O’Brien’s exit agreement with NBC that expires on May 1, he is not eligible to appear on the Idol Gives Back special. He can, though contemplate a new late-night show launching perhaps in September.

World-famous urban artist Justin Bua (BUA) was selected to host Ovation’s weekly series American Revolutionaries, airing Tuesday nights at 8p. The series chronicles American artists, from musicians and composers, photographers to authors and playwrights and more, who have been pioneers in their respective type of art. Upcoming episodes of American Revolutionaries will profile Truman Capote, Martha Graham, Aaron Copeland and Dale Chihuly among others.

Tate Donovan, lately of FX’s Damages was cast in ABC’s drama pilot No Ordinary Family, playing a mysterious pilot, cites THR. The pilot also stars Michael Chiklis as Jim who heads an ordinary American family that suddenly acquires new abilities.
