Mid Career Change
by John McSnarky

Thinking of changing your career in your late forties or fifties?  Think a lot.  There are plenty of pitfalls that lay ahead unless the career change has been offered to you on a sliver platter.

Pitfall #1.

Money.  If you are thinking of leaving your job/industry without another job offer, don’t; unless you have plenty of money socked away.  And when I say plenty, I mean living expenses for two years without dipping into retirement funds.  If you don’t have it, reconsider or wait.

If you think your current situation is bad, wait until you’re unemployed and have to move out of your house that you can no longer afford, get rid of those nice imported cars and trade them in for used compacts.

All those luxury items gone, because you didn’t like your job situation.  Wake up, most people have serious gripes about their jobs, but they keep them because they have other responsibilities more important than being intellectually fulfilled at work on a daily basis, they have families to take care of.

We all get the itch, but be very careful because a move like this can have very serious consequences.

Pitfall #2.

Just because you’ve always wanted to be an chef, doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good chef.  Love or passion for something isn’t enough, you have to be good at it, to get hired.  Even then, love and passion only go so far, ask any of the 90% of new restaurant owners that fail within their first 12 months.

Pitfall #3.

What if you do get that new job within that new industry, only to face the same frustrations you had at your old job?  Talk to people within your desired industry, tell them of your concerns and see if they experience the same frustrations.  If so, you have just saved yourself a lot of time and trouble.

Pitfall #4.

Do you have the education to succeed at this new job?  Even if you do, why would the company hire you over some 22 year old who just got out of school for the same thing.  Is your savvy worth the extra money they would have to pay you compared to a 22 year old?  Again, talk to people within the industry and see what they are looking for.  If the jobs can be handled by cheaper, younger workers, those are the ones the company will hire, not you.

Pitfall #5.

“Do what you love and the money will follow.”  It’s a nice story to tell your children before they go to bed, but otherwise, it’s not a great piece of advice.  Even if it was always, or just occasionally true, which it’s not, the big question remaining is, “How long before the money follows?”  Can you stay financially buoyant long enough?

There is a fail safe practice in gambling, whenever you lose, double your bet.  This way, you only have to win once to get even.  Sounds good in theory, but it’s a terrible idea.  Why?  Because you’ll run out of money long before the casino does.

Same logic applies here, the money may indeed follow, but will it be in time?

I wish I could write that mid career changes are easy, fun, invigorating and almost always successful.  And for some people, that is exactly what it is.  But for most of us, it’s tough, a lot of work, and very expensive in more ways than one.

Golden handcuffs exist and sometimes, they are just too tough to remove.  So if you are considering a career change, please put all you ducks in a row and do a lot of thinking about the move.  Remove all emotion from the equation, write a list of pros and cons, and remember all your other responsibilities before making your move.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
How To Get Yourself Motivated
by Michael Pollock

A friend reminded me that the 2000-year Old Man used fear as a transportation method: “An animal growls at you and you’d go two miles a minute.”  She told me that fear is what motivates her to get to work.

What is it that gets you away from your Solitaire or Facebook or Farmville?  You already know your goal is to get a job, grow a business or get out of a rut  but knowing why you want that can help kickstart you into action each day.   Here are some drivers that could get you off the mark:

Excitement:  Is it the thrill of the chase, plotting the strategy, celebrating the victories that get your heart pumping?  You’ve got to be in it to win it.

Anticipation:  Picture your life when you’ve moved forward on the path to your dreams.  So much better than where you’re coming from.

Greed:  The Ferrari, bigger houses, the private jet.  But material greed is not the norm for the creative professionals I work with  they are greedy for awards, peer recognition, new clients and gigs that validate their sense of worth.  Use this  this greed is good.

Jealousy:  Let’s face it, the recognition (surely undeserved!) that others are getting is another valuable driver.  But don’t ape them; generate success doing your own thing. Then we’ll see who’s jealous.

Restlessness:  One of my drivers.  It could be an ADD thing; we just don’t want to repeat ourselves and are more turned on by something new.  Figure out how you can shape what’s next. Find a purposeful direction, not just movement for its own sake.

Guilt:  This doesn’t usually lead to a good result  pick another driver so that you can stop looking over your shoulder.  Give yourself something to look forward to.

Curiosity:  This is a goodie.  Seek out what’s new   put opportunities and ideas together in different ways to see what happens.  Surprise yourself.

Ambition:  But for what? Titles? Riches? Notoriety?  If you know what it is you want then you can devise the strategy to get it.  I’ve been told it’s all about sex, the biological imperative.  That is above my pay grade, but if you recognize that in yourself I am sure you can make it work for you.

What I’m proposing is a moment of reflection so you can pick one or more drivers that’ll get you going in the morning. Once you achieve flow you will be happy and productive whether you are looking for a job or a new career or a new revenue stream or a new client.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Michael Pollock

I have been unemployed for 17 months and have decided to look for a headhunter. But I have no idea how to start the process. I have asked friends, but none of them know any. What should I do?

The reason there is no obvious way to find a headhunter is that they are not looking to be found by job seekers. Their clients are the employers, and when they are given an opening to fill, then will they spend their time looking for someone who is right for that job.  Only very rarely will a rock-star candidate with exceptional and high-demand skills be marketed by a headhunter. All of which is to say: they will find you when they need you, so you have to be findable. LinkedIn is a primary source, be sure to have your specialties listed well, because that is where they will look.

Each recruiter works with just a few client companies. If they don’t have a relationship with the company you are targeting, they are not going to be helpful to you.  Above all, be aware that only a very small percentage of positions are placed by headhunters; you can spend your job search effort much more productively than trying to find one.

I am a hiring manager at a mid-level company. My last hire was a drop dead beautiful woman who had a great resume and interview. I hired her. She did not work out. Of course I was teased by my co-workers for hiring on looks rather than proficiency. And now I find myself in a similar position, a seemingly well qualified candidate who is again, drop dead gorgeous. If this one doesn’t work out, I am afraid that my reputation will be sullied. I know it’s not fair to this woman, but I am very worried about this whole situation. What should I do?

This business of beauty is very subjective.  One man’s Danny Trejo is another man’s George Clooney.  Just saying.  But I hope that the teasing you are getting over this is not indicative of the way you are generally perceived in the company.  Be sure you haven’t given your colleagues any other reasons to think you might be making hiring selections on the wrong criteria.  As for the next case, I suggest that you have a couple of co-workers meet with your short list of candidates and get a consensus, so that it won’t all be on you.  It usually is a good idea anyway to have candidates meet several people before a decision is made  then this kind of thing will not be a concern.
