03.19.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

HBO made an intriguing move, and will no longer buy fights from Golden Boy Promotions in the near future. Yahoo! writes that the decision will mean that oft-featured stars such as Adrien Broner (aka “Mr. HBO Boxing”) and light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins will no longer be showcased on the channel. The report states that HBO Sports President Ken Hershman made the decision break up with Golden Boy after “running into issues with company executives.”

Sponsorship & Promotion

The NFL will pay $42 million as part of a settlement with a slate of retired players who challenged the league’s use of their names and images without their permission. The AP writes that the league will use the money to bankroll a trust over the next eight years that will benefit retired players. In addition, the settlement will create a new licensing agency for retired players in order to make sure they are compensated for “the use of their identities in promotional materials.”

LG Electronics USA will deepen ties to the NCAA as an official NCAA Corporate Partner, adding a number of interactive activities and initiatives for hoops fans at the 2013 NCAA Men’s Final Four, from April 6-8. As part of the promotion, the company will team with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to bring back the LG Coaches’ Cook-Off competition, where two NCAA coaches will face off for charity in a side-by-side culinary showdown at the LG Kitchen in Atlanta; share “Top Chef All-Stars” winner Richard Blais’s game-day cooking tips and offer fans opportunities to interact with the latest LG appliances, home electronics and mobile devices in the LG Fan House at Bracket Town in the Georgia World Congress Center.
