Peter Graves, best known for his co-starring roles in the zany Airplane! movies and starring in the TV series Mission: Impossible, died Sunday from an apparent heart attack near his Los Angeles home. He was 83 and one week away from turning 84. Peter was the brother of another well-known TV actor, James Arness, star of the 1950s Gunsmoke series. In the early days of his career, Peter was a radio actor then moved to Hollywood and had turns in various movies such as The Night of the Hunter (1955) and John Ford’s The Long Gray Line. Because of his distinguished, tall good-looks, Peter often played authority figures such as Jim Phelps, the leader of a group of special operatives in the iconic TV classic Mission: Impossible from 1967-1973. Peter reprised this role on a 1988-1990 MI series where he was the only returning member of the original cast. Before MI, Peter also starred in the Saturday morning kids TV show Fury. Going against his image as a straight-shooter, Peter was cast in the 1980 whacky movie Airplane! and its sequel Airplane II: The Sequel in 1982, starring with other serious actors Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen. In more recent years, Peter was an alternating host on A&E Network’s Biography series and played himself in the opening scene of Men in Black II.
