Good morning – it’s Tuesday, March 15, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! 

A friend and I went to an Irish bar last Thursday night, one week prior to St. Patrick’s Day.  Too many amateurs out on the real St. Patrick’s Day.  The bartender was a young man about to graduate college with a degree in advanced finances.  Throughout the night we got to know our bartender, and my friend and I both determined that this was a nice, hard working kid, and if possible, we would help him.  I asked the bartender if he was going into finances to make money, he said no, he wanted to help clean up this mess we all find ourselves in. 

I have another friend who is an excellent money manager and one of the most honest people I know.  So I told the bartender that I would set up a lunch between the three of us, and for an hour, the bartender could pick the money manager’s brain about the finance industry.  The bartender was thrilled.

The money manager was free the following Monday at 1p.  I emailed the bartender and this is the actual response I got:

Hey John,
Thank you for following up and talking to Mr. H; unfortunately I have class on Mondays at 1pm and I am not able to miss it.
If you wouldn’t mind, I would really appreciate it if you could forward my attached resume to Mr. H. This way he can see if he has a void I can help him fill, and we can set up a future sit-down to discuss possibilities.
I would like to thank you again for taking the time to talk to Mr. H on my behalf.

Saddened, but hopeful that I could still help this young man, I sent this in return:

Dave,
Though your response was polite and professional, my offer was for you to gather real world information from a very qualified person within your chosen field. Instead, you asked for a job. Now Mr. H has no further interest in talking to you, and some of the few things you have missed out on are; time spent with a real professional, a contact for the future, networking possibilities, and guidance on probable pitfalls that lay ahead.
Dave, you put people on the spot when they offer their time to you, and instead, you ask for a job. Believe me, if they want to hire you after the talk, they will ask.
I hope you understand this situation and don’t let it happen again. You seem like a real good guy and a hard worker and I have no doubt that you will do well in whatever you choose to do. I also hope this has been a valuable lesson.

Five Ways to be More Positive at Work

Let’s face it: It has been a tough economic recession and with companies continuing to downsize it can be difficult to have a positive attitude. You are doing more with less, you are stressed and you are not always feeling your best. It is said that it takes more energy to be upbeat and positive then it does to be cranky and negative. Given the times it may be a challenge, but being more positive in your workplace can not only make you feel better, it can actually create a space for you to advance in your career.

Here are 5 ways to “rev up” that positivity muscle:

Focus on what you want. Positive people look at the big picture. You might be a Sr. Manager with your eye on an Executive Director title. You may be planning to take the plunge and start your own business. By focusing your thoughts on what you want and being optimistic about it rather than what you don’t want (to stay where you are), you will create a situation that will create a positive outlook in anticipation for that next step.

Educate yourself. Professional development and self-education are great ways to live a more positive life. Read books on the areas of your life you want to improve. Take professional development classes. For example, if you want to improve in your public speaking or presentation skills, join a Toastmasters club or take a workshop on the subject.

Appreciate. This is a very simple gift that you can give to yourself and others and will bring more positivity into your life. I have also found that just being appreciative can turn an angry, sad and frustrated mood around to a more positive one. Every day,think of at least 5 things to be grateful for in your current role at work. It could be flexibility or autonomy in how you do your job, helpful and friendly colleagues, interesting and exciting work, a great boss who is more like a mentor than a boss, an easy commute,or your own successful contributions that you have given. Every day spend a few moments thinking about an aspect of your current work that you are grateful for.

Don’t compare yourself to others. This was a big challenge for me early in my career. When you compare yourself to others you basically create a lot of unnecessary stress in your life. You can become insecure and not confident in your abilities. Remember,you are a unique individual with your own talents and gifts; and besides,you don’t know what that other person had to do to get where she is anyway! Focus on your own life. Do You.

Leverage Chance Opportunities. When you have a positive outlook you are more open to creating, noticing and acting upon chance opportunities. You can do this in many ways including, adopting a relaxed attitude, networking,and being open to new people and experiences.

By following these few simple tips, you will notice your mood lift, your outlook look brighter and you are ready to take on new and exciting challenges. And here is another hint: others will notice it too and will respond in kind!

Does it reflect poorly on the job seeker if they apply for several positions within a single company, even If they’re genuinely interested and have the qualifications for both?

It is perfectly fine to apply for two or more different positions if you feel that you are truly qualified just so long as the positions in question are at similar levels. For example, if you are apply for two different VP roles within a company or you apply for a Director role and a Senior Manager role.However, if you apply for a VP role, a Director role and a Senior Manager role within the same company, it might be perceived that you are just trying to get a job and are applying for any and everything.It may not look very well to recruiters and hiring managers.You want to stay as close to your career level as possible.

Does ‘Teach For America’ mean anything on a resume in the media industry? While I know completing a 2-year Teach For America commitment is prestigious to graduate schools, does it have any value in the media world? I’m currently finishing up my first year as a Teach For America corps member and I don’t know if I’d like to complete my 2-year commitment for a variety of reasons. I know this can be looked at in a negative light in other professional fields, but how do you think this will impact my job search in the media industry?

It is perfectly fine to discuss your experience at Teach for America; especially if your experience at that organization relates to the media in some way.Since you didn’t say what your role within the organization was, answer these questions: Did you handle media relations for the organization? Did you work for a Teach for America newsletter or in-house radio station?It may not be relevant in the media industry if there is no related industry experience associated. Relevance is key!

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Peter Smith, President with NBC Universal International is departing the company at the end of the month. Peter’s exit is a result of Comcast’s acquisition of NBCU.  Peter has been with NBCU for more than 20 years and was promoted to his current position as head of the international division in 2006.

Telemundo Communications Group Inc. added Dan Lovinger as EVP/Advertising Sales and Integrated Marketing.  Dan will head advertising sales and marketing the company’s networks, Telemundo and mun2 in addition to their digital assets.  He will also manage and oversee the growth of all multi-platform branded entertainment efforts and integrated client solutions.  Dan will report to Jacqueline Hernandez, COO, Telemundo Communications Group.

David E. Brenner named CEO with television production and distribution company, Shankly Productions based in West Hollywood.  David was promoted to his new position up from EVP over the company’s development, finance, production and distribution efforts.  He succeeds Leon Logothetis in this position who was appointed Executive Chairman

Later this month, Brianna Keilar will be a part of CNN’s White House team as a Correspondent.  Most recently, Brianna was a congressional correspondent, covering news from the US House and Senate.

Eastman Radio upped Catherine Clowers to VP in New York and Miranda Martin to SVP in Los Angeles.  Catherine has been with Eastman Radio since 2005 and Miranda since 2009.

Cory Stern hired by Los Angeles-based advertising agency/production company, Stun Creative in the position of VP/Development.  Cory joins from Conaco Productions where he served as Director/Development. 

As of yesterday, the NPR Board of Directors accepted the resignation of President/CEO Vivian Schiller, effective immediately.  The Board has had a succession plan in place since 2009 which means Joyce Slocum, SVP/Legal Affairs and General Counsel will serve as Interim CEO.  NPR’s Board will form an Executive Transition Committee to develop a process and timeframe for the recruitment of Vivian’s replacement.  Board Chairman Dave Edwards said, “The Board accepted Vivian’s resignation with understanding, genuine regret and great respect for her leadership of NPR these past two years.”

James Knox hired as VP/UK Publicity at DDA Public Relations, effective immediately.  In his new position, James will join the company’s executive board with oversight on growth strategies and development of DDA’s publicity department in the UK.  James began with DDA in 2010 as Acting Director/UK Publicity.  He will report directly to CEO Lawrence Atkinson and COO John Stannard. 

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the commercial and brand extension unit of FremantleMedia, has four executive staffing changes, effective immediately, within its North American licensing group:

  • David Luner elevated to EVP/Consumer Products, Interactive and Mobile.  David’s new job expands his current management of such brands as American Idol and The X Factor to now include the upcoming roster of new children’s content, licensed and original game brands as well as the digital content development division.
  • Olivier Delfosse bumped to VP/Interactive, Mobile and Digital Content where he will manage the FremantleMedia’s continued expansion in the gaming arena, including social media gaming and more. Olivier reports to David Luner.
  • Chris Donnan promoted to Director/Live Events to spearhead the production of touring shows and budgeting across all facets of FME’s live events including the traveling versions of shows such as The Price Is Right. Chris reports to Andy Felsher, FME SVP/Entertainment, Games, and Live Events.
  • Dhivyah Ramanath added as Senior Manager/Consumer Products: Softlines responsible for the apparel, accessory and publishing businesses.  Dhivyah reports to David Luner.

Warner Bros. International TV Production (WBITVP) added Adam Joy for the newly-minted position of VP/Business Development.  Adam will supervise activities surrounding acquisitions, joint venturing and working with international production companies as WBITVP expands its production businesses outside the US.  Adam will also be involved with implementing and negotiating transactions and coordinating transactions across operational divisions.  Based in London, Adam will report to Alex Ogilvie, head of Business Development for both WBITVP and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.

Effective immediately, Co Collective added Jacob Styburski as Chief Collaborator where he will head teams in the areas of branded product design, services and experiences for the company’s clients.  Jacob will report to Co-CEOs Ty Montague and Rosemarie Ryan.

Ryan Pinette promoted to VP/Production and Operations with Bravo Media.  In his new role, Ryan will continue to manage production for Bravo’s original series and specials.  Previously, Ryan was Director/Production and Operations at Bravo.

Telemundo Communications Group tapped Patricio Wills to take on the full-time position as President of Producciones RTI, the company’s joint venture in Columbia producing Spanish-language telenovelas and series.  The appointment is effective immediately. Furthermore, Aurelio Valcarcel upped to EVP/Telemundo Studios Miami where he will oversee all productions emanating out of the Telemundo Studios in Miami.

Adrienne Scordato hired by Momentum Worldwide as VP/Director of Global Communications.  In this new position, Adrienne replaces Stephanie Rudnick and will have responsibility over all marketing communications efforts.  Adrienne will report jointly to Chris Weil, Chairman/CEO and Kevin McNulty, CMO.

Alexis Josephs elevated to the newly-created position of Senior Director/Sales Strategy and Development at music video and entertainment service, VEVO.  Alexis will work with the company’s national sales team to spur revenues and growth by developing strategic co-branded music partnerships.

Former Lifetime Television VP/Ad Sales Partnerships executive Amy Scanlan appointed to SVP/Business Development and Strategic Partnerships with CBS Television Stations.  Her position begins today and in her new role, Amy will work with the sales teams at the group’s 28 local television stations to develop new business efforts and cross-platform sales opportunities.  Amy will report to Jim Sullivan, President/Sales, CBS Television Stations.

Janet Rolle joins CNN Worldwide as EVP/CMO and she will report directly to Jim Walton, President, CNN Worldwide.  Janet will be based at CNN’s New York office.  Most recently, Janet was EVP/CMO with BET Networks.

Matthew Breen named as Editor in Chief of The Advocate succeeding the present Editor in Chief, Jon Barrett who leaves to become the Los Angeles bureau chief of Entertainment Weekly.
