Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 13, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Wrestling

I was a high school wrestler for four years, two on Varsity.  My freshmen year, the only match I won was a forfeit.  My sophomore year I actually beat three opponents, all of them were freshmen, but a win is a win.

I worked hard at being a wrestler, a lot of work that took two years to pay off.

My Junior and Senior years I was a good but not great wrestler.  It took time and an incredible amount of effort to get to that level.  But I loved every minute of it because with every run, with every pull-up, with every practice, I got just a little bit better.

My daily motto was, “What did I do today, that my opponent did not?”

An extra run after practice, working with stronger and heavier wrestlers so I could learn from them and giving every ounce of effort during each and every practice and match.

Out of a job?  Become a wrestler.  Do whatever it takes to get better, go the extra mile.  Review and rewrite everything.  Practice your elevator speech and interviews, let no question startle or stump you.  Study your industry, the big players, the up and comers.  Know more about the company you are applying at then your interviewer.  Create a strategy and a schedule, and everyday, do something just a little bit better than you did the day before. 

So one night, when you ask yourself what you did today that the opponent did not, the answer will be, “I got the job.”

SUITS: 7 Smart Ways to De-Clutter Your Career

Because of his mind for such detail each case has the potential to be a big winner. There is no room for extraneous actions. There is no need to deviate from his plan.   

How precise is your action when you’re pursuing a job? Is it an exact science of proven strategies? Or do you find yourself doing the same things over and over and not getting the results you want?

If it’s the later, it’s time to do some de-cluttering. Your career is a business. Businesses fail for many reasons. In Harvey’s case, the only way to lose is if someone deviates from the plan and things get messy. Businesses don’t thrive in a mess. So if your career is feeling messy or disheveled, here are 7 ways to de-clutter your career:

1.  Update your contact list. Time to go through your contacts with the eye of a business owner. Who are your valuable contacts? By valuable I mean the people who care about and contribute to your success? I give people a goal of 200 contacts because of my successful clients’ proven track number with that number. However, if you’re just keeping contacts on your list for the “number” it’s not an accurate or valuable list. So re-do your contact list so you can have a clear visual of how many people you know who can hire you directly, can connect you with people, or are valuable to you in the way of networking partners or career support. Then evaluate what’s missing so that you can start building relationships that will move you forward.

2.  Evaluate what makes you money and grows your contacts. Make a list of everything YES EVERYTHING you do to get jobs that make you money and to grow your contacts. Once you make the list eliminate the ineffective work. This will most likely be the stuff you do that is in your comfort zone that doesn’t reap the rewards, but makes you feel like you’re doing “something.” You may rationalize it by saying that doing something is better than doing nothing, but if it’s ineffective you may as well use that time for self-care. My reasoning is that I’ve seen too many people do ineffective work to feel good about doing “something” only to feel horrible when they get no results. You’d be better off doing something fun or invigorating for your mind, body, and soul.

3.  Chunk your time. In the same way that you schedule out a chunk of time in your calendar for a job, you can chunk out time for focused work. Start with the hardest tasks, the ones you don’t like to do. If you procrastinate the hard tasks, you get far less done than if you get them over with.

4.  Design a networking plan. Knowing that networking is so important for your career, take the guess work out by researching the most effective places for you to network and then schedule the events in your calendar. Going to networking events for the sake of going is “clutter.” Know why you’re going, who you want to meet, how many people you want to meet, and what you have to do to have a successful event.

5.  Change your workspace. If your work space is not an inspiring place, de-clutter it and make it a place you love to work. The other alternative is finding a new space; a posh hotel with wireless access, a coffee shop, or a friend’s house who has a great view.

6.  Create a follow up calendar. Follow-up is one of the most important ways to maintain relationships. Again, within your chunked batches of focused work time, create a schedule for follow up. Choose a number of people to follow up with per day or per week, but don’t let it go farther than that or it could get messy.

7.  Batch your social media marketing. By now you know how important your social media network is. People get hired based on how many “Friends” and “Followers” they have. A big reason why people get frustrated by social media is because they see it as a “time sucker” which it can be. So batch your posts by using free services such as HootSuite.com  

Consider this your winter cleaning. De-cluttering will not only make your job pursuit a smoother process, it will also make you feel good.

2. Add in a step or two each week until you’ve completely de-cluttered.

3. Do something to celebrate the hard work you’ve done!

Does it help to send in more than one resume for a particular job at a company?

Here’s what helps, to have a referral to that company when submitting your resume. With social media sites like LinkedIn, it’s easier than ever to find people who work at your target companies.

Start creating relationships with people who work there so that when a job shows up that you’re applying for you can ask to use the person’s name as an introduction AKA referral when applying. When someone at the company is reading through the same old cover letters (basically form letters) yours will stand out when you have the name of a company employee referring you.

Or if it’s a last minute opportunity and you haven’t formed any relationships at the company, reach out to all of your contacts to ask if anyone knows anyone at the company, in order to make an introduction. Note: a referral is not a recommendation. The person at the company is not recommending you for the job because they don’t know you well enough for you to ask for that (unless you’ve brought the relationship to that point).

All they are doing is allowing you to use their name as an “in” so that your cover letter/resume stands out.

If I set up a personal website, what other information should it contain that a resume and cover letter would not?

A personal website is for branding yourself and creating relationships with your visitors. It should have an introduction page, a download page where potential employers can download resumes or stream reels, and a must have these days is a blog.

The subject matter would reflect what you do, how you do it, and with whom, in more detail than a letter or resume. You would also include a personal angle to the blog that reflects your characteristics that would be attractive to potential employers.

They want to know you have life experience that makes you interesting and good to work with. Keep in mind that while some entries may tie in your personal life, they are specifically chosen to reflect your personal brand.

~ RECAP: THIS WEEK IN EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Gaumont International Television (GIT) and its newly-established production and distribution studio in Los Angeles added several executives: Andy House as Head/Production; Elisa Roth as Head/Creative Affairs; Marc Hirschfeld to oversee casting; and Alison Engel as VP/Creative Affairs.

Charlotte van Weede was hired by Entertainment One (eOne) in the newly-minted role as Head/Sales.  Charlotte will be based at eOne’s office in London joining most recently from Protagonist Pictures where she served as Head/Sales.

For its New York office, Jonathan Shipman was named Head/Integrated Production with the visual effects, animation and digital production company Framestore.  Jonathan will report directly to Jon Collins, Framestore President.

Charles W. Wolfertz, III was appointed GSM with WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh owned by Hearst Television Inc.  In his new role, Charles will manage all sales for the station as well as its companion website at WTAE.com and the 24-hour movie channel, thisTV Pittsburgh.  Charles joins WTAE from WHAS-TV, the ABC affiliate in Louisville, KY owned by Belo. 

Scripps Networks elevated Brian Lando to SVP/Development.  For this new challenge, Brian is relocating to Los Angeles and he will continue to develop and manage programming for Food Network and Cooking Channel as well as offer new development oversight to HGTV and Travel Channel.  He will also carry on the management of many tentpole programs for Food Network.  Brian reports to Bob Tuschman, GM/SVP Programming, Food Network and Cooking Channel.

Effective immediately, Kelly McAndrew takes on the new role as VP/Corporate Communications with Cablevision Systems Corporation.  Kelly will oversee the development and communications activities that support the company’s corporate strategy, financial performance and corporate developments.  Kelly will further be involved in spearheading the media relations efforts of Cablevision’s Local Media properties among other duties.  Kelly reports to Charlie Schueler, EVP/Media and Community Relations.

Ed Palluth advances to EVP/Global Distribution with AMC/Sundance Channel Global.  In his new role, Ed will continue to oversee distribution for AMC Networks’ international brands including Sundance Channel and WE tv.  He reports to Bruce Tuchman, President, AMC/Sundance Chanel Global. 

Tribune Broadcasting’s national cable, satellite and telco network, WGN America welcomes Brian Carr in the role as VP/Strategic Sales and Planning effective next Monday.  Brian will take the lead on strategic pricing, planning and oversight of WGN America’s advertising deals.  He will report to David Rotem, SVP/Sales and Marketing and be based at the network’s New York headquarters.  Previously, Brian was with Viacom’s MTV Networks Entertainment Group where he held several senior management positions. 

Lisa Black joins FishBowl Worldwide Media as SVP/Business Development and Enterprises where she will manage all business development efforts for the company’s television and digital units.  Lisa reports to Bruce Gersh, President/CEO.  Prior to this appointment, Lisa served as GM for Warner Bros. Women’s Digital Brands and Business Development. 

Veteran TV executive Sarah Tomassi Lindman was hired by Oxygen Media as SVP/Program Strategy, effective immediately.  In her newly-minted role, Sarah will spearhead the growth of Oxygen’s core audience and will head all audience viewing metrics for the Oxygen brand among numerous other duties.  Sarah will report to Jason Klarman, President, Oxygen Media and be based at the network’s New York office. Congratulations, Sarah!Great news!

Randi Schatz was named President of AVENUE magazine by Manhattan Media.

Canada’s The Licensing Shop Inc. (TLS) added Avra Goldenblatt as VP/Brand Management.  Before this position, Avra was Director/Communications and Promotions at Transcontinental Media.

Film/TV executive Paul Rich established a new film and television distribution company, BoPaul Media Worldwide (BMW) which will launch at MIPTV in Cannes, France April 1-4, 2012.  The company begins with a library of more than 800 films and 150 hours of television series programming.  Paul was formerly SVP at ICAP Media/Moving Pictures.  BMW will be located at MIPTV stand 11.22 (#34), 1st floor, Palais and its headquarters is in Los Angeles.

Reality production company A. Smith & Co. Productions bolstered its production team by adding four full-time producers: Lindsey Kugler, Brian Richardson, Mark Rowland and Anthony Storm will all become Executive Producers working on various A. Smith & Co. productions.  They will also be charged with development new projects for the company. 

Former Director/Development and Original Series at Fuse, Holly Hines takes on a new position at FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) as VP/Scripted Development, effective immediately.  Holly will be integral in developing new scripted projects for the company while reporting to Tony Optican, SVP/Scripted Programming. 

New York-based audio post-production house Sound Lounge said Rob DiFondi is rejoining the company effective immediately.  Rob is an experienced mixer and began his career in production and post-production at Sound Lounge in 1999.  For the last three years, Rob has been a mixer at audioEngine.

Rural Media Group, Inc. hired Terry Sekel as SVP/Advertising Sales and Andrew Eder as VP/Sales.  Terry will have oversight on sales strategy for general market advertising while expanding the company’s revenue base.  Terry will be based at his office in New Jersey. Andrew will focus on developing multi-platform opportunities for advertisers looking to connect with the company’s consumers.   Andrew will be based from his office in Connecticut.

Christophe Cauvy was tapped by JWT in the newly-minted role as European Head/Digital and Innovation.  Christophe will further expand JWT’s digital presence in Europe.  Previously, Christophe was with Momentum Worldwide, London where he worked as SVP/Regional Director of Innovation for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
