Arts cable network Ovation passed the 50 million mark in March 2012, based on Nielsen data.  Ovation’s distribution level increased due to a recent launch on AT&T U-verse TV

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

A new spinoff series based on RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise was announced by Logo.  The new series, All Stars: RuPaul’s Drag Race will watch as previous contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race will go toe to toe in an all-new competition.  Logo approved six one-hour episodes from World of Wonder Productions and the new series will debut this fall on the network.  Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race can also help with casting the new show.  The top members of the secret cast will be revealed in a few months, though starting now fans can visit the show’s Facebook page and review all 46 previous participants and vote for their favorites.  The winning contestant from Facebook voters who will appear on All Stars: RuPaul’s Drag Race cast will be announced on NewNowNext.com.

BBC America and SBS Australia made a format deal for BBCA to adapt the docu-series Go Back to Where You Came From.  The four-part one-hour Australian series, produced by Cordell Jigsaw productions was about six Australians who agreed to challenge their set ideas about refugees and asylum seekers by retracing their dangerous journeys from the original homelands in reverse.  This deal marks the first time SBS Australia has signed with a US broadcaster.  SBS Australia additionally made deals with TV2 Denmark and Israel’s Keshet Broadcasting.  Furthermore, Tuvalu Media, Studio Hamburg DocLights, Snowman Productions and Curious Pictures have all signed on having the option to produce local versions of the docu-series in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and South Africa respectively.

Soon after his departure at CNN, interviewer Larry King is launching a daily talk show format similar to his former Larry King Live CNN show which will stream on Ora.tv, a new online TV network based in New York and co-founded by King and Carlos Slim, a billionaire telecommunications mogul.  Slim will fund Ora.tv through his Latin American wireless company America Movil.  There is no specific launch date for Ora.tv though it is likely to begin later this year.

Drama series Wallace, based on Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning film Braveheart, is in development by STV Productions in association with Digital Rights Group, Nine/8 Entertainment and Creative Media.  Wallace will focus on the background of Scottish hero William Wallace, his warring and personal life, as he attempts to unify Scotland. Mick Davis created the series and will serve as EP with Creative Media president Todd Berger and Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert of Nine/8.  The original idea for the series was from Kent Dalian and Braveheart film advisor Seoras Wallace.  Digital Rights Group is involved with global distribution.  Creative Scotland is also on board as an investor in the project based on its previous development fund deal with STV.

Executive producer Simon Lythgoe is working with arts cable network Ovation on a one-hour, seven week series A Chance to Dance slated to premiere August 17, reports Variety.  The series will surround former Royal Ballet dancers Michael Nunn and William Trevitt as they create their own ballet company in the US.  Nunn and Trevitt will visit three US cities: Washington, D.C., Austin, TX and Salt Lake City and train 24 dances before they narrow it down to 12 dancers.  Lythgoe will serve as EP with his son Simon.  Nigel Lythgoe Productions and Legacy Productions are behind the project and production will commence later this month.

ABC’s untitled comedy pilot starring Mandy Moore has added Stockard Channing and Kurt Fuller.  The comedy is about a young newlywed couple, Annie (Moore) and Ben who get the chance to run a hip restaurant in Annie’s hometown, bringing her close to her needy and high-maintenance family.  Channing and Fuller will play Annie’s parents.  20th Television is producing the single-camera comedy.

Cop pilot L.A. Noir for TNT tagged Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) for the lead role.  In this new period drama project, Bernthal will play Joe Teague, the LAPD cop at the center of the plot who is in hot pursuit of mobster Mickey Cohen.  Frank Darabont, former showrunner of The Walking Dead, is also on board to write and direct the pilot as well as serve as EP along with Michael De Luca and Elliot Webb; Alissa Phillips will also serve as co-EP.

Former Sopranos star Michael Imperioli landed a role on NBC’s hospital drama pilot, County from Jason Katims, cites TVLine.  Imperioli will play Dr. Mercer, a veteran doctor who oversees incoming interns.  Jason Ritter, Michael B. Jordan, Jess Weixler, Agam Darshi and Aimee Garcia are also starring in the pilot.
