Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 13, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

With the March Madness tipping off today, CBS Sports and Turner Sports have locked in broadcast teams for the first two rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. In first four coverage, Jim Nantz, Clark Kellogg and Steve Kerr will call the action, with Tracy Wolfson courtside for the two First Four games on Tuesday on truTV from Dayton, while Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel, and courtside reporter Lewis Johnson will handle microphone duties for Wednesday’s action. Second-round coverage begins Thursday and Friday at 11a.

ESPN2 will offer exclusive coverage of the entire 75th National Invitation Tournament beginning tonight at 7p with the Massachusetts/Mississippi St. game. The contest will open a showcase of all 31 games spanning ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3. In addition to five exclusive ESPN3 games during the first round, the broadband network will also simulcast every first round, second round, quarterfinal, semifinal and final matchup. The semifinal will run on ESPN2 while the championship game is set for ESPN and ESPN3D.

ESPN will also visit the White House tonight where ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz and basketball analyst Doris Burke will grab President Barack Obama’s NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament picks. His predictions for both tournaments will be released Tuesday evening and segments of the interview and his National Championship men’s pick will debut on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Wednesday, March 14, at 9a while his women’s pick will be revealed on Friday at 9a. Last year, his bracket ranked 746,086 for the company, placing him in the 87.4 percentile.

The quarterfinal matchup between Ohio St. and Purdue at the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament scored as the highest-rated basketball game in BTN history, according to Nielsen metered market data. The game drew an average household rating of 3.11 across the network’s eight metered markets, besting the previous record by 40% and scored as the top cable program in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Indianapolis that day. Meanwhile, the other quarterfinal matchup featuring Michigan/Minnesota scored a 2.07 HH rating for the channel and was the top-rated cable program in Minneapolis.

NBC Universal has selected the Arbitron Portable People Meter service to track out-of-home television viewing for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Summer Games. As a part of The Billion Dollar Lab, NBCUniversal will have access to out-of-home Olympic viewing reports based on the approximately 69,000 PPM survey participants in 44 top U.S. media markets currently measured by Arbitron.

NASCAR announced that Paul Brooks, Senior Vice President of NASCAR and President of NASCAR Media Group, is departing the company on May 4, to focus on personal and outside business interests. Brooks has been with NASCAR for 19 years and will continue to serve as a senior advisor to the company in key areas, including broadcasting, media strategy and innovation.

Golf Channel is adding Bob Papa to its on-air team for live tournament coverage in 2012. Papa will serve as a play-by-play host for the network’s coverage of the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour, beginning this week at the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, Calif. Papa also will take on play-by-play responsibilities at the Encompass Insurance Pro-Am of Tampa Bay on the Champions Tour and three events on the PGA TOUR  the HP Byron Nelson Championship, FedEx St. Jude Classic and the Travelers Championship.

Golf Channel also announced contestants for the return of reality series Big Break, which is slated to come back on May 14 at 9p with an all-female cast. Big Break Atlantis marks the series’ 17th season, and will showcase a field of 12 women at different stages of their golf careers, with several currently playing on the Symetra Tour (LPGA developmental tour), while others turned professional for the series. In addition to other prizes, the winner will receive an exemption to a to-be-announced 2012 LPGA Tour tournament and cash.

Darrell Waltrip has agreed to become a voting member of the SPEED Performer of the Year panel, joining the likes of Hall of Fame racers such as Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, Sir Stirling Moss, Don Prudhomme and Scott Russell. The winner of the annual award is presented the Mario Andretti Trophy on a special episode of SPEED Center in February.

The Arena Football League’s 25th season kicked off over the weekend on NFL Network amid some confusion. A players’ strike was called hours before kickoff and forced teams to instead use replacement players selected in a draft held before the game, leaving the channel without rosters and names of players for the telecast. The AFL players’ union is pushing for a pay boost to their $400 per game salary.

FOX Sports Detroit announced the death of Tim Bryant, the network’s long-time Director of Media Relations, who passed away suddenly over the weekend. In a statement, FOX Sports Detroit Senior Vice President and General Manager Greg Hammaren said, “Tim was an invaluable member of the FOX Sports Detroit team. His contribution to the success of our business cannot be overstated. I am thankful to have worked alongside him and proud to have known him as a friend for the last 10 years. He was a confidant and a counselor to many of us, and his wisdom will be missed. It’s hard to find the words to describe the sadness all of us at FOX Sports Detroit are all feeling today. Our thoughts and prayers go to Tim’s wife Teresa and his son Danny, whom he loved tremendously.”

WFN: World Fishing Network and retailer The Orvis Company are teaming up to teach people the essentials of fly fishing with the series Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing. The show will be hosted by Tom Rosenbauer, with a 13-consecutive week run starting tonight at 9p. Following the first two episodes, WFN will run a 15-hour Fly Fishing Fever marathon on Sunday, March 25.

The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame has elected NBC Sports’ Bob Costas and author, columnist & Golf Digest Contributing Editor John Feinstein to its ranks as a 2012 inductee. The organization will honor them along with national sportswriter of the year Joe Posnanski, national sportscaster of the year Dan Shulman and 103 state sportswriters and sportscasters at the 53rd annual NSSA Awards Banquet on June 11 in Salisbury, North Carolina.

NBC Sports Group has promoted Seth Winter to Executive Vice President, Sales Marketing for the company. Hoffman has served as SVP, sales and marketing, network entertainment since 2004 and will continue to oversee marketplace sales and marketing strategy for many of the NBC Sports Group’s assets, including NBC Sports & Olympics, Golf Channel, the NBC Sports Network and their respective digital assets.

The Ivy League entered into a new partnership today with sports and entertainment marketing firm, Leverage Agency to create sponsorship opportunities for the conference as well as provide other marketing functions, including social media, public relations and domestic licensing. This is the first time The Ivy League has hired an agency for this role.

UFC fighter Jim Miller has landed a sponsorship deal with outdoor retailer Bass Pro for his main event fight against Nate Diaz on UFC on Fox 3 on May 5th according to Miller’s agen,t Oren Hodak. The deal includes logo placement and promotional appearances outside of the octagon. In addition, Miller will have Microtech and Venum returning as sponsors for the event.

Steve Fainaru has joined ESPN as Senior Writer, ESPN Digital and Print Media. Where his work will be utilized across all ESPN platforms.

SB Nation formally announced its channel on YouTube as part of YouTube’s original programming initiative. This channel will feature talent from SB Nation and the world of sports and will roll out a variety of new original reports, unique shows and more. Day of launch content will include Amy K. Nelson series Full Nelson, Bomani & Jones, Shutdown Fullback, SB Nation, Team Reports, and The Petey and LoMo Show. 

UEFA has extended its deal with deltatre to provide results and broadcast services through 2015 Under the new agreement, deltatre will offer the organization services that include live data gathering, TV graphics, official print-outs, commentator information systems, stadium giant screens and hospitality TV feeds.

Latino site VOXXI is launching a sports section covering soccer, baseball, football, basketball, boxing, as well as others sports and sport-related news. Coverage will include Jose Oliveros will serve as the new sports editor with coverage set to include European and Latin America soccer, Major League Baseball, the NFL and the NBA, as well as Olympic sports and collegiate-level sports.

The Celebrity Gaming League announced that its inaugural 2012 season will be played in multiple markets across the U.S. with celebrities and athletes competing in video game tournaments. The roster of participants includes MLS All-Star Kevin Hartman and games will include Madden 12, HALO, Call of Duty, FIFA Soccer 12, NBA 2K12 and more.  The winner of each tournament will have a donation made to the charity of their choice.
