Advantage

06.08.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 2, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

People Don’t Like Asking For Help and it’s Hurting Your Company.

Asking for help is tough, it seems like a bit of a surrender, as in, I’m not good enough to accomplish this by myself.  We show too much of ourselves, we become afraid that every time someone looks at us, the first thing that comes to mind is how we needed help.  Plus when we ask for and receive help, we feel indebted, not many people like feeling indebted, and you want to stay away from those who do.  So we are reluctant to ask for help, unless it’s an emergency.

In other scenarios, we gratefully receive help from someone, but when we try to repay in kind, we get rebuffed.  As if the person that helped us enjoys feeling, “one up,” or worse, superior to us.  This situation can turn bad very quickly, and the relationship loses all trust.

And the odd thing is that everyone, especially in business, needs help; that’s why there are different departments and different levels of jobs.  In the most obvious example, CEO’s hire accountants because the CEO’s can’t do it themselves.  It’s true of most positions in every corporation, one person simply doesn’t have the talent to do it all.  So they ask for help, they hire.

Oddly enough, it’s the very secure people who can easily ask for help, in their self awareness, they feel no awkwardness in asking.  You’re better at this than I am, you understand things I do not.  Not easy to say in the business world, and yet, essential.

For a company to run at its most efficient, the best people need to be put on each task.  An impossible endeavor.  But a business will greatly benefit if the company’s culture encourages teamwork (really meaning it), and supports people asking for help when needed without forfeiture of standing.

Some of you are undoubtedly thinking that there will be that guy, that one guy who takes advantage of the situation and ends up doing nothing.  True, someone will probably try.  But these people are so easily identifiable, they shouldn’t be a concern for long.

Next week: Checklists.

We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
How to create a brand called “You”
by Gena Yuvette Davis

When people ask, “What is personal branding?” all kinds of definitions can come to mind. Personal branding is not just about selling, image building or promoting yourself. That is more in the line with personal marketing.  A personal brand is a combination of attributes – personal and professional – that is communicated through behavior, deed or action which influences thought-process in the minds of others. Basically, it is how one is perceived in the world.  Your personal brand is about knowing who you are, what you want, doing what you love and developing yourself on a regular basis. In today’s world, having a strong personal brand is an important asset to have and if not managed correctly, it could have long lasting repercussions on a career and in life.

So how do you create and maintain a strong personal brand? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What aspects of your work and life do you enjoy the most?
  • What is your area of expertise and/or unique skills?
  • What are your personal attributes?
  • What aspects of your background, education or experience differentiate you from your peers?
  • How do you want to be perceived?
  • What do you value?
  • How do peers, colleagues and managers perceive you and your strengths (and weaknesses)?

Once you take time to think about and answer the above questions, you will begin to formulate your brand vision. Now this process takes time and shouldn’t be rushed. Self reflection is deep and can be scary, so approach this process in gentle and loving way. When you do this work, it will put you one step closer to creating a brand called “You.”

The next step in creating your personal brand is the creation of a brand statement. A brand statement is a strong core statement that helps you to stand out among others and tells who you really are. An example would be: “As an experienced Global Brand Marketing Executive with over 10 years of experience, I have engaged in cutting edge marketing technologies that helped global retail and entertainment companies achieve aggressive revenue growth through strategic marketing and branding campaigns.  Some of the top companies I have worked with include GDC Stores, Big Studio Entertainment, New Co Apparel, and Action Mobile Entertainment, an online mobile content provider.”

You can also use parts of this brand statement to create your brand story or elevator pitch when discussing your qualifications and experience.

How do you maintain your personal brand? Well, there are lots of ways:

  • Be proficient enough in your field to be seen an expert within your industry.
  • Be a resource. Answer questions, look to help others, offer your wisdom freely.
  • Be available. Get on panels and offer to give speeches at industry events.
  • Be online. Make sure you have a website and/or blog. Also social networking is a MUST: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
  • Be approachable. Enough said.
  • Be visible. Go to trade shows, conventions and networking mixers. Talk to as many industry leaders as you can, but more importantly, listen.
  • Be you. Always stay true to your personal brand.  Your personal brand will be tied to the ideas you are expressing. If you are mean and nasty, you will lose credibility and your personal brand will suffer as a result.

By creating, maintaining and staying true your personal brand you will always be perceived as strong, authentic, and confident. You will also create a life that is fulfilling and attracts the people and opportunities that are a perfect fit for you.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Gena Yuvette Davis

I recently applied for a position and was interviewed. At the conclusion of the meeting I was asked for references which I supplied. However, none of them were ever called and I did not get the position. Why would they ask for references and then not check them.

There are many reasons why a recruiter or a hiring manager would ask for references then suddenly not call any of them and go with a different candidate. Perhaps the hiring manager or recruiter thought you would be a good match for the position, but maybe a higher up wanted to go with a different person or they decided to put the position on hold or maybe another candidate came to light that had a skill set closer to what they were looking for. The important thing is to not take it personally. That particular job just wasn’t meant to be.

There is a job out there that is perfect for you and it’s coming.

I’m a writer/producer who’s been marketing myself to a particular branch of a studio for several months. I’ve had multiple interviews which have all gone very well. They have all said that I would “be a perfect fit in their division.”

They recently went through a big restructuring and laid off many staffers and are now only hiring on a contract basis. They’re waiting for their next big project to be green lit which is when they said would like to bring me on–which may not be for another 4-5 months. (This is the second round of delays as initially they thought the project would start by May.) It’s a place I would very much like to work but finances are starting to keep me up nights. I’ve been cobbling together some part time work but I may not be able to wait until fall to take something full time.

A few days ago a job was posted on their company web site for a coordinator/associate producer job of sorts. Would applying for that lower level job to get a foot in the door, damage my chances of being considered for something more senior down the line?

This is a tough one. If this is a company that you really want to work for and are willing to take a lower level position just to get into the door, I would go for it. Just know that, depending on the company’s culture, it may be harder and take longer to move back up to your current level. You may want to be up front with the hiring manager and let them know that you are willing to take this lower position to get your foot in the door and show what you can do, but your desire is to move into a position within the company that more closely match your skill and experience level when it becomes available. It’s a risk, but it may be worth it in the long run.
