Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
06/07/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 7, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
You have found the job of your dreams, and as you read the necessary requirements, you feel even more confident that this job is for you. Then you see the ultimate buzz kill, “Please send in cover letter and resume including salary requirement.”
I am not a fan of the salary requirement question, I think it’s unfair to the applicant. But some companies believe this is an efficient method of culling the potential employee pool down to the few, best applicants.
There are a number of ways to handle this situation, all of which include risk. The list below will start with the riskiest responses, to the least risky response.
You can ignore the request, and they can ignore your application.
You can be vague and answer, “competitive.” But this reply smacks of evasiveness and laziness, rarely satisfying the company’s request.
Another lazy answer that often results in elimination is, “I’m flexible.” Being flexible is welcomed within salary negotiations, but you still did not answer their question, or even give them an idea as to where to start.
You can attempt to volley the question back to the company by writing, “I need to know more about the position before deciding on a reasonable salary requirement. In order to be fair to both myself and your company, perhaps this question should be answered after an interview.” This response demonstrates some thought on your part, but can frustrate the employer because you still haven’t answered the question.
Provide a salary history. The employer should understand that your salary requirement is greater than your last job. Once again you have not answered their question, but you have at least given them a starting point.
Or you can go the safest route, and give them a number. It’s best to briefly explain how you arrived at your salary requirement and any other information you think is important, such as your flexibility.
For example:
- I have researched both industry and position salaries through numerous sources. I have also researched the cost of living for the location of the job. After considering these factors and based on your description and my experience and background, my salary requirement is $75,000-80,000. This is a base income that does not include benefits or any other incentives your employees generally receive. My salary requirement is negotiable, depending on the scope of the benefits offered, advancement opportunities and the schedule of salary reviews.
While this is the safest way to go, there still are some risks. First, your request is simply too much and you are eliminated. Another risk is your requirement may be lower than they are willing to pay. Either way, you have provided the company with an intelligent response to their question.
Next Issue: Dear Boss…
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
In this volatile job and skills market you probably should be thinking about what your next gig might be even when things look good. You never know what’s round the corner.
Think of it in the way a salesperson thinks of the sales funnel, and try to have various opportunities at different stages on the go at any one time. This way of thinking can be very helpful as you are building your contacts and revising your materials to reflect your growing skills and experience.
Here are the key stages, based on the classic sales process, but spun to suit our jobs funnel.
- Discovery of the opportunity – You’ve spotted an ad or met a new networking connection or heard something on the grapevine.
- Research – You learn everything you can about the firm in question, its people, the industry sector and so on. Don’t short-change this step any nugget of information could turn out to be the one that makes the difference.
- Develop your resume or proposal – We’ve talked about this elsewhere ad nauseam – and will continue to do so!
- First communication get noticed – You get your intro, or send your first email or phone call. Remember: always think first: what do they really want? This is the trailer that has to move people to consider you.
- Submit your resume or proposal – Show clearly and concisely that you have the goods they dream of.
- Get buying noises – They respond and want to know more or to meet
- The Interview – Where you start to close the deal. Prepare by catching up on the latest in the field and at the company. Present your past successes so they can see what you will do for their future.
- Negotiation – Don’t be a supplicant. Your attitude should be “if we both want this to work I am sure we can find a way.” But remember they may have a budget they can only bust in exceptional circumstances. Also, if there is something you are particularly interested in doing for them or having in your package get it out there now rather than let it fester.
- You’re hired: now exceed their wildest expectations!
So those are the stages and like all good salespeople you’ll want to have several opportunities at different stages of the funnel at one time. Move one forward to first communication while you are interviewing for another. This way you will always have something on the go and you won’t just be sitting and waiting – and stewing.

If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
I really enjoy the newsletter and I’m hoping that the experts might be able to provide some insight on the HR software programs that are being used so much by networks and large organizations.
I’ve found the process incredibly frustrating and often very time consuming. What I’d really like to know is how quickly does the screening of your resume for key words and responses to their questions eliminate you from the position. I always incorporate key words from the job description into my resume and cover letter, but if they ask, for example “how many years experience do you have in marketing?” and you have 2 1/2 years as opposed to the 3 they are looking for, are you automatically disqualified?
There have been a number of positions that I’ve applied (and am qualified for) but never received a request for an interview. As there’s no way to follow up, I’m curious to know what I could be doing wrong or how automated these processes really are.
The level of automation can be quite extensive. As resumes come into the systems they are parsed – which basically means scanned and entered into a database. The hirer has the ability to set up questions to which certain answers will trigger automatic rejection. But this is in the control of the user the software merely enables it.
Then there is a search phase where the user does what is called a Boolean search; here they are searching on keywords to select certain combinations of criteria, for example: ((Project Manager OR Team Leader) AND (MS Project)). This is most likely to be on skills and job titles.
As for the 2.5 years, it is more likely that they will review the employment periods once they have narrowed their pool to those resumes with the required criteria.
So the bottom line is the automation is very much in the control of the recruiter and its filters will vary not just from company to company but from position to position. But it certainly is possible for the hirer to build in automatic instant rejection if they choose.
After my recent interview, I was asked out to lunch for a more informal interview with the team I might eventually work with. They all ordered an alcoholic beverage while I ordered a water. I know that people are looking for a good fit, did I just blow it by not ordering a drink more in line with what everyone else was drinking?
It is sadly possible that you blew it, though you were smart not to indulge in the alcohol while you were on trial, as it were. You do need to have your spidey sense turned on such occasions.
If they were looking for a kindred spirit and they had decided that kindredness involves alcohol consumption, then they may have decided you were not for them. If alcohol was a deciding factor for them, then was that the right group for you anyhow?
One way to go might have been to order a beer or Perfect Manhattan or whatever – and also ask for a glass of water: a totally normal request. Then you could take just a sip or two of the alcohol but use the water to replenish the fluids you might be sweating out.
