CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

06/07/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, June 7, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Local People Meter‘s May 2005 viewing demographic info from Nielsen Media Research for the Washington D.C. and Philadelphia markets has been announced prior to its official release on June 30.  According to the ratings company, the bigger LPM samples (as compared to its Set Meters program) have shown a more accurate picture of the television viewers habits in those specific markets.

  • In Washington, the African American household LPM sample size went up from 113 to 146 (29%) with the Hispanic and Asian American household LPM samples increasing drastically by 122% and 133% respectively.   In Philadelphia, the African American market sample grew by 59% (104 to 166); and the Latino household LPM samples rocketed up by 124% and Asian samples increase by 69%.
  • The 18-49 African American crowd watched 93% more viewing sources in Washington under LPM while Philadelphia’s group looked at 78% more viewing sources.
  • Spanish-language primetime viewing for the Hispanic Adult 18-49 crowd with LPM grew by 67% in Philadelphia and 300+% in Washington.
  • The 18-49 year old audience in Washington showed a 22% jump for full day viewing numbers with the Local People Meters as compared to the previously used meter/diary data in Washington and 15% in Philadelphia.  The jump included an increase for more than 40 broadcast stations and cable networks in total day viewing as well.
  • According to Nielsen, the African American household LPM metered (non-persons) fault rates decreased from 11.6% for LPM as compared to 16.8% with the Set Meter sample for the same time period in Washington.   Philadelphia’s rates for the same population group was 11.4% versus 20.2%.

Barry Diller said it in 1991, and now Leslie Moonves is singing the same tune:  Broadcasters gotta get paid. At the Deutsche Bank Securities conference yesterday in NYC, Moonves vowed that once the Viacom split was complete, the CBS side would go after retransmission fees from cable MSOs for both CBS and UPN. Moonves also said the affiliate stations could count on CBS to back them up in their negotiations for retrans fees with local cable systems. As for the Viacom splitting of CBS, Radio and Outdoor away from the MTV cable networks group, the board is expected to vote this month.  Assuming that goes thru since Sumner Redstone wants it to go thru and what Sumner wants he generally gets, the shareholders will vote in the next couple of months.

CBS
:  Fire Me, Please!  at 9p

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

* CASTING NOTES *

A little re-jiggering at CNN – it will be Team O’Brien anchoring American Morning (7-10am weekdays) as anchor Miles O’Brien joins Soledad O’Brien at the desk, replacing Bill Hemmer.  Hemmer will be leaving CNN.  And if you didn’t notice, Crossfire and Inside Politics both went off the CNN air on Friday.  Stepping in is The Situation Room with anchor Wilf Blitzer, airing 3-6p weekdays. The hosts of the two replaced shows, James Carville, Robert Novak and Paul Begala, will stay on as analysts.  Judy Woodruff had previously announced she would be leaving the network.  Also, Jack Cafferty from American Morning, will move to The Situation Room.

Coming to VH1 this fall is a new series called The Agency.  A sort of companion to America’s next Top Model to which the network just acquired the off-net rights, The Agency is a behind the scenes look at life at the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency, with particular focus on seven booking agents.  These are the folks who decide who is beautiful, deal daily with models and all of their isms, and through it all shine a light on the business of modeling. VH1 has ordered 10 eps of the 30m series.

Four series have been renewed for new seasons at NBC Universal Domestic Television DistributionBlind Date, The Chris Matthews Show, The Wall Street Journal Report with Maria Bartiromo and The George Michael Sports Machine.  Blind Date has been reupped for a 7th season and has been already sold in more than 92% of the country.  Chris Matthews has been renewed in 95% of the country for its fourth season; WSJR with Maria Bartiromo is coming up on its second season, also widely cleared; and George Michaels will be back for its 22nd season.

UPN‘s premiere of its new summer “dramality” series R U The Grls with T-BOZ & Chilli, is scheduled for Wednesday, July 27 at 8p.  The show is looking far and wide for just the right girl to join T-Boz and Chilli, with the winner cutting a single with the group.

Discovery Channel will launch a new daytime series called Go Ahead, Make My Dinner where two chefs go head to head attempting to whip up as many dishes as possible within 20 minutes.  The show debuts on June 27 and airs M-F at 12n with host Mark Silverstein.

Superstation WGN will launch a new 30m weekly series this fall called Race Car Driver. The show focuses on Canadian driver Paul Tracy of the Forsythe Championship Racing Team.  The show is expected to air in back-to-back episodes Mondays through Saturdays in primetime.

As Cablevision Systems Corp. prepares to shut down Voom and its DBS distribution business, it has announced it expects the early closure to cost the company in the neighborhood of $100-$130 million.  That cost is incurred as a results of terminating contracts early, employee benefits, etc.  The closing expenses will be covered with proceeds from the sale of Rainbow 1 satellite to Echostar, a price tag of $200 million.

A Delaware Chancery Court has ruled that the lawsuit filed by dissident members of Disney’s Board of Directors, Roy E. Disney and Stanley P. Gold, against the Disney company and select members of the Board of Directors of the company can move forward, with a trial date now set for August 2005.  Messers Disney and Gold filed the lawsuit on May 9, 2005, alleging Disney shareholders were intentionally led astray by statements made by the Disney Board, in order to encourage shareholders to vote for the incumbent Board at the 2005 annual meeting and to persuade Disney and Gold not to run an alternate slate of directors at that meeting.  Disney and Gold also filed suit against Robert A. Iger, Michael D. Eisner, Judith L. Estrin, John S. Chen, Aylwin B. Lewis, Monica C. Lozano, George J. Mitchell and Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J., for “fraud and breach of the duty of disclosure in connection with the Board’s public statements about the search for a replacement for outgoing CEO Michael Eisner.”  Robert A. Iger, President, ABC is slated to assume Eisner’s responsibilities as CEO effective September 30, 2005.

Cynopsis Housekeeping Survey:  If you have about 3 minutes, would you mind clicking here for a quick survey about Cynopsis?  Your responses to these surveys are always useful and often incorporated into the Cynopsis editions.  As always, you are not asked to identify yourself, nor are there any clever behind-the-scenes ways for me to know who participated in the survey.  The goal is to get your suggestions to help us make Cynopsis better.  Thanks for the help — Cyn.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1978 – After nearly nine months at sea, 29-year-old Naomi James sets a new record for a solo around-the-world sailing voyage, beating the previous record by two days.  By the way, thanks for the heads up on the incorrect date in yesterday’s History Channel fact – should have read the invasion at Normandy was in 1944, not 1989.  Glad to see you all know your history facts so well!
