Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 3, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
 
Next there will be a quarter slot on your modem. Time Warner Cable will begin metering the internet usage of its customers in Beaumount, Texas per the AP, charging an extra $1/gigabyte for those who go over monthly allowances of uploads and downloads. Customers who pay $29.95 for the 768k service are capped at 5 gigs of data per month. Those who pay $54.90/month for the faster service get 40 gigabytes before they’re charged extra. Time Warner is providing a meter on their website to help users keep track of their usage. Word to the wise, Beaumountians: if you watch video or play games online, you’d better hurry up and upgrade to the more expensive plan.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Think World of Warcraft meets Battlestar Galactica. Sci Fi Channel and video game publisher Trion World Networks are developing an entertainment franchise targeted for release in 2010 designed to “play” on both online and TV platforms. The show on Sci Fi channel and the multiplayer Trion World game will share the same fictional characters and setting, driving viewers back and forth between the platforms to satisfy their thirst for the mythology of the world. It’s an ambitious undertaking but one worth going after; Blizzard’s Warcraft has over 10 million online users and has inspired a feature film slated for release in 2009.
 
myLifetime.com is rolling out a regiment of digital extras for Season 2 of Army Wives premiering on the network June 8. Fans can stream full episodes or a 9-minute season recap of season 1 for free, connect with fans through a variety of social networking tools and view in depth character pages.
 
PBS multiplatform kids brand Sprout is harvesting a new content initiative to help parents get their kids to bed. Sprout is commissioning a live action, short form series by The Jim Henson Co. and 4Kids Entertainment to help teach pre-bed routines and alleviate separation anxiety with a variety of original characters. The 10-minute segments will show up from November on PBS, Sprout On Demand and sproutonline.com.
 
Atlas Media’s Atlas Digital + Emerging Media division completed a new 5-part series for History.com to help clear up some commonly held misconceptions about the sometimes murky political process in America. The Vote 101 follows up on Atlas’ Path to the Podium series for History.com.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Mobile microblogging service Zannel.com (winner of the 2008 Mobile Social Networking Webby) closed on $10 million in series B funding led by Allow Ventures and existing investors U.S. Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures. Zannel (short for zillions of channels) allows users post videos, pictures, text updates from their phones for friends to comment on, with widgets integrating content with Flickr, Twitter, Facebook and other platforms.
 
Flock.com, “the social web browser” introduced some more cool new features yesterday, integrating additional social networking sites including Digg and Pownce as well as AOL’s webmail service. One-click support is also offered for Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, photobucket and YouTube, among other sites.
 
NATPE released details of the second annual LATV Festival, to be held at various venues in Hollywood and West Hollywood, CA from July 30 – Aug. 1. In an effort to save on bandwidth costs Veoh Networks took steps to block international users in 33 countries from accessing its videos, reports NewTeeVee. Expect more belt-tightening at these highly funded, low-revenue generating video start-ups.
 
Dorm Life producers Attention Span Media signed a deal with YouTube to join its enhanced Invideo ad program, sharing revenue generated from embedded ads sold via Google’s AdSense network. ASM’s newest creation SockTube Presents also launched an ad-supported channel.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Some juicy details were revealed when a judge unsealed a document in a Yahoo shareholder lawsuit filed after the company’s board rebuffed Microsoft‘s advances. Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang appears to have thwarted the bid by instituting an expensive employee severance program on Feb. 12 that would have cost Microsoft anywhere from an extra $514 million to $2.4 billion. Even Yahoo’s compensation consultants were taken aback by the size of the plan.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
In an effort to end devaluation of its online inventory through third party remnant networks, Turner formed its own network combining ad sales from 19 wholly-owned and partner sites delivering a total of 48 million unique monthly users, reports Mediaweek. Sites include TNT.com, TBS.com, CNN.com, AdultSwim.com, NBA.com and PGA.com.

I’m not sure if this tells us that Mom is close to our hearts or that everyone waits until the last minute to shop for her. Last month’s Mothers Day saw the biggest spike in mobile phone web navigation in U.S. history says local search and navigation company Networks In Motion with over 5 million user interactions processed that day. NIM powers a variety of local mobile services including AAA Mobile on Verizon Wireless, Alltel, and Sprint and YellowPages.com Mobile on Alltell, U.S. Cellular and Telus.

named former New York Daily News Assistant Managing Editor Gregory Gittrich as National News Editor for Digital Platforms, including the various local station websites, widgets, syndicated offerings and mobile applications. Greg is the latest in a series of recent NBC Local Media digital hires including Mort Greenberg, VP/Sales; Brad Soroca, VP/Marketing; Matt Saunders, VP/Technology; and Shawn Makhijani, VP/Strategic Development, NBC Local Integrated Media.
 
CBSSports.com
hired sportswriter Danny Knobler to join Scott Miller in covering baseball for the site from New York. Danny comes to CBSSports.com after 18-plus seasons of covering the Detroit Tigers for Booth Newspapers.
 
Founder of Real Media and behavioral targeting ad firm Tacoda Dave Morgan became Chairman and Partner of The Tennis Company, owner of Tennis.com, Tennis and Smash magazines and partners in the Pacific Life Open and Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

CBS.com and members of the CBS Audience Network took a big step this week toward making its video more web 2.0 compliant. The new player streams in HD-quality (utilizing the MPEG-4, H.264 compression standard,) without requiring a meddlesome plug in. Subsequent features will be added during the summer to bake in the kind of interactive features web savvy users crave. Two of the cooler features to look for will be: chat viewing rooms (CBS is currently testing out different models and partners for this feature, according to CBS Interactive SVP & GM of Entertainment Anthony Soohoo) and video recommendation functionality inspired by the tools Last.fm members use to share music. Combining these kinds of customizable tools with targeted advertising solutions should help attract high-CPM support from the ad community once the kinks are ironed out. With competitors like Hulu and ABC.com moving fast to offer more interactivity, the overhaul happens not a moment too soon.
