2010 FIFA World Cup ratings update: Sunday’s game between Mexico and Argentina gave Univision its highest viewership ever with 9.3 million total viewers. This match topped all former programs on Univision across all genres and has become the most-watched telecast in the history of Spanish-language television in the US. The Mexico vs. Argentina game also delivered nearly 5.6 million among A18-49; more than 3.3 million A18-34; and more than 4.0 million P12-34. Additionally, Univision drew in close to 3.7 million total viewers for the Sunday morning contest between England and Germany as well as 2.3 million A18-49 viewers; 1.3 million A18-34; and 1.4 million P12-34.

ABC Family ordered 12 more episodes of its newest one-hour scripted series Pretty Little Liars. This additional order takes the total episode count up to 22. Pretty Little Liars is based on the Harper Teen novels by Sara Shepard and the series is produced by Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television.

A&E Network acquired a pilot FOX discarded titled Breakout Kings, picking up 13 episodes of the 60m drama created by Matt Olmstead (Prison Break) about a group of US marshals and ex-cons working together to capture escaped criminals. The series stars Jason Cerbone, Domenick Lombardozzi, Laz Alonzo, Malcolm Goodwin and Nicole Steinwedell.

Spike TV will soon debut its new weekly comedic reality series Scrappers, premiering August 3 at 10p and 1030p. Scrappers follows three Brooklyn, NY scrap metal crews as they search the streets to find old appliances and abandoned cars to useless building materials all in the effort to turn a major profit. The teams are comprised of friends competing against each other who hope to end each day with a big daily haul. The series was filmed on location is various neighborhoods of Brooklyn and is executive produced by George Verschoor via his Hoosick Falls Productions; Michael J. Weiss and Andy Weiss serve as executive producers with Will Spjut as co-executive producer. Scrappers was created by producer Frank Fidilio and the Weisses.

Investigation Discovery (ID) adds two news magazine shows to its line-up in July, which join the network’s other news magazine offerings of 48 Hours, Dateline and its original series, On The Case With Paula Zahn:

  • 60 Minutes On ID – Hosted by 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, this 30m series gives viewers an update on stories from CBS’ 60 Minutes. Produced for ID by CBS News Productions and premiering July 12 at 8p.
  • Chasing Justice With Dan Abrams – Hosted by NBC/MSNBC chief legal analyst, Abrams, this 30m series pulls stories from NBC’s Dateline and examines the events of the crime, the investigation, the trial and finally the verdict. Produced for ID by Peacock Productions and premiering July 12 at 830p.

National Geographic Channel (NGC) penetrates the depths of freshwater regions in search of aquatic giants when Monster Fish returns with a sneak preview on July 18 at 10p. The series, featuring fish biologist, conservationist and Nat Geo explorer Zeb Hogan will move to its regular time slot of Mondays at 10p starting July 19. Following on July 26 at 9p, NGC premieres Fish Warrior with angler and world record-holder fisherman Jakub Vagner as he explores remote locals looking for a “dinosaur of the deep.” Monster Fish is produced by National Geographic Television for NGC and Fish Warrior is produced by Michael Hoff Productions for NGC.

TV Land launches a third season of its original reality competition series She’s Got The Look on August 25 at 10p. The series in its new season sports several new things such as a fresh look based in Los Angeles, a new host with Brooke Burke and a new judge with supermodel Roshumba Williams. The show continues to partner with Wilhelmina Models, Inc. to find the one beautiful, sophisticated woman over the age of 35 who will win a contract with the modeling agency and a photo spread in SELF Magazine. She’s Got The Look is executive produced by Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan with their company, Fly On The Wall Entertainment; Rachel Tung is also an executive producer. Fremantle Media distributes the series worldwide.

This fall, Madison Square Garden’s national music network Fuse will debut two new original half-hour series:

  • Lay It Down – Hosted by singer/songwriter and producer Cee-Lo Green, this show features interviews and performances from hip hop, pop and R&B artists. Produced by Bishoff/Hervey Entertainment.
  • Mad Genius – A documentary series that profiles brilliant though rebellious musical artists. Series is produced by Planet Grande Pictures.

E1 Entertainment, producer of the new cop drama Rookie Blue reported the series, which debuted simultaneously in the US on ABC and on Canada’s CanWest Global last Thursday, attracted more than 9.1 million total viewers in both countries combined. On ABC, Rookie Blue netted 7.3 million viewers while 1.8 million tuned in on CanWest Global. Rookie Blue is a Thump Inc/E1 Entertainment Production.

Last Thursday’s reboot of animated series Futurama on Comedy Central at 10p averaged a 1.9 rating among A18-49; a 4.5 rating with M18-24; and a 3.5 rating with M18-34. The sixth season opening episode also attracted 2.9 million total viewers. Futurama is from Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen and produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television with Rough Draft Studios, Inc. supplying the animation.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Warner Bros. announced the sitcom The Big Bang Theory has cleared in eight additional markets for off-net syndication, taking the show’s total clearances to a little more than 30 markets, cites B&C. The show was picked up by Tribune’s WPHL/Philadelphia; CBS’ WFOR-WBFS/Miami; Local TV’s WJW/Cleveland; Meredith’s KPTV-KPDX/Portland; Sinclair’s WSTR/Cincinnati and WMYV/Greensboro; Newport’s WHP/Harrisburg; and Block’s WDRB/Louisville.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The upcoming seventh season of NBC’s The Office appears to be the last for star Steve Carell. Over the weekend at the premiere of his new animated movie, Despicable Me, Carell confirmed what he said last May that the next season of The Office will be his last. Carell said he would honor the final year of his contract and was “excited” to spend more time with his family.

Reality and lifestyle production company, 44 Blue Productions is teaming with actor Rob Lowe and his company, Loweprofile to develop and produce a nonfiction series based in Washington, D.C. titled Potomac Fever. The series would follow real-life aspiring “West Wingers” as they participate in all that is politics, power, sex and love in our nation’s capital.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: UNIV finished the workweek a winner Friday night among A18-49 at 1.6/6, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV led at 8p with Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 1.7/7 while ABC’s Wife Swap and NBC’s Friday Night Lights tied for #2 at 1.1/5 apiece. UNIV stayed in control through 9p with Soy Tu Duena at 2.2/8 and CBS’ Flashpoint narrowly secured the second spot at 1.2/4. ABC’s 20/20 was #1 at 10p with a 1.6/6 followed by NBC’s news magazine show Dateline at 1.3/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

David Nevins will become the new President/Entertainment at Showtime Networks Inc. later this summer succeeding Robert Greenblatt who is departing the company in July after completing his current contract. David was previously president of Imagine Television since 2002 and in his new role will lead all development, acquisitions and programming oversight for Showtime Networks’ channels. Based in Los Angeles, David will report to Matthew C. Blank, Chairman/CEO of Showtime Networks Inc.

Alan Simkowski was appointed SVP/Marketing Partnerships with MSG Entertainment. Alan will spearhead all activities pertaining to developing new and profitable business opportunities for MSGE and its partners including completely integrated marketing deals with local, regional and national accounts.

Discovery Communications named Rex Recka to the newly-created position of VP/International Program Enterprises  Acquisitions for Discovery Enterprises International. Rex is charged with working closely with Discovery’s US and international programming and development groups to identify and analyze specials and series for international syndication and co-financing opportunities involving third-party broadcasters. Rex will be based at Discovery’s Silver Spring headquarters, reporting to Nicolas Bonard, SVP/Discovery Enterprises International.

Arthur Schweitzer was selected as a Senior Consultant and Liaison for the NATPE 2011 Market & Conference held next January 24-26 in Miami Beach. Arthur will work with Gary Mitchell, NATPE’s European business development executive based in London, in contacting the European marketplace.

The independent online news site and magazine, Newsmax Media hired Shellie Terry Benson as Deputy Managing Editor for Newsmax. Shellie will manage Newsmax magazine’s MaxLife section which houses health, personal finance, life and trends and technology columns. Shellie will also be in charge of all of Newsmax’s health content in the magazine, online and at NewsmaxHealth.com. In her new role, she will be based in West Palm Beach, FL. Prior to this appointment, Shellie was the Executive Editor of GulfshoreLife magazine, for the Naples, FL region.

Entertainment Studios Networks tapped John McDonald as VP/Marketing to supervise and steer the company’s entire marketing spectrum. John will be involved with brand strategy, consumer media planning, working with the promotion of network distribution, affiliate marketing, ad sales partnerships and interactive online and mobile marketing efforts aligned with the company’s six 24-hour HD cable networks and 24 syndicated TV shows. Based at Entertainment Studios’ Los Angeles headquarters, John will report to Janice Arouh, the company’s new President/Domestic Distribution and Marketing. 

Edward M. (Ted) Prince Jr. advances to the newly-created position as COO for National Geographic Global Media (NGGM) where he expands his duties across all media platforms. Ted will have responsibility for the digital growth of Nat Geo’s media properties ranging from magazines and movies to television and digital media. Furthermore, Ted will oversee documentary production for National Geographic Television and will continue to manage the National Geographic Channels for NGGM among other duties. Ted reports to Tim Kelly, President, NGGM.
