CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

06/27/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 27, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The Torante Company, owned by Michael Eisner, will purchase Team Baby Entertainment, the children’s sports production company known for its tagline: “Raising Tomorrow’s Fan Today!” from its founder Greg Scheinman who will continue on as CEO. Tapping into the devotion of many parents’ to their alma mater and respective sports teams along with the desire to share that school spirit with their kids, Team Baby launched its initial set of college sports-themed DVDs in fall 2005. Eisner and his company hope to grow the national awareness of the Team Baby brand which has twenty DVD titles that tap into the fanaticism of top college and university fans. Titles include Baby Irish (Notre Dame), Baby Longhorn (University of TX) and Baby Wolverine (University of MI). Footage on the DVDs include officially licensed clips of the school’s sports teams, the mascots and campus attractions, as well as “team babies” playing with school-logo products, all the while interspersing counting and spelling with a soundtrack that includes the school’s fight song performed by the school’s marching band and other originally composed music.

The US Supreme Court has decided not to hear the Winnie the Pooh copyright appeal, which was filed by Clare Milne, the granddaughter of Pooh author A.A. Milne, thus letting stand the decision of the lower courts.  In 1930 the author himself had granted the Pooh license to Stephen Slesinger, who in 1961 along with Milne’s widow, signed Disney to a sub-license pact for select rights to the property, and Disney in exchange, agreed to pay royalties to both from sales of Pooh related products.  Slesinger, Pooh Trust and Disney then renewed their Pooh pact in the 1980s. It is this rights renewal that Clare Milne was trying to overturn.  In the long running fight, Ms. Milne has been working to regain the rights to Pooh from Slesinger, hoping to void the 1980s license renewal and then reassign the rights solely to Disney.  While Disney was not a plaintiff in the case filed by Ms. Milne, the company has paid for legal services.  Several years ago Slesinger’s family sued Disney claiming it was owed back unpaid royalties of upwards of $700+ million, that case was dismissed last year and an appeal is pending.

ValCom Inc. has acquired Media City Studios, which will now be called ValCom Burbank Studios.  The TV/movie production facility is 25,000 square-feet and is located in Burbank, CA.

Walt Disney Television International (WDTI) Southeast Asia is partnering with True Digital Entertainment to offer Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney in Thailand.  The IPTV provider will offer the pair on its True IPTV platform as part of a monthly subscription.  Hong Kong’s Now Broadband TV was the first to sign on with WDTI for its first Asian IPTV deal covering the two channels.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Universal Music, a UK recording company, has established Globe Productions, a new TV unit that will develop TV shows/programs around its roster of music artists, which includes U2, Elton John, Scissor Sisters and Keane.  Development projects already underway include a documentary for the BBC focusing on artist Paul Weller, which will be produced by Globe with Double Jab Productions, per a BBC report.  Globe has also inked a deal with indie production company, Monkey, to produce Girls Aloud, the limited series will debut on Channel 4 in the UK this fall 2006.

MARKETING/LICENSING

In case you traveling in a different galaxy … Warner Bros. will release its feature film, Superman Returns, tomorrow.

  • Online site HowStuffWorks has introduced a range of information about the inner workings of the Man of Steel.  Features include how Kryptonite works and a visit with director Bryan Singer on the set of Superman Returns that includes a series of video tours focusing on how the comic book hero was translated into a feature film and so on.  (www.howstuffworks.com)
  • For fans having trouble waiting and who need something to watch in the meantime, Warner Bros. has set up a Superman Returns countdown and the iconic S-Shield being projected on landmarks around the country including at Niagara Falls, the Time Warner Center in NYC, The Queen Mary in Long Beach Harbor, CA, Palms Casino Resort’s new Fantasy Tower in Las Vegas; Chicago’s Sears Tower; and the Mall of America in Minneapolis. The S-Shield is also being seen in other cities including Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Dallas, Denver, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Kansas City.

Universal Studios Hollywood launched its new attraction Fast & Furious: Extreme Close-Up yesterday.  Based on Universal’s movie Fast & Furious movie franchise, the attraction features a chase sequence of two specially-outfitted Volkswagen cars, large scale motion control simulation, followed by a robotic program set to a hip-hop beat.   The studio has also introduced a virtual studio guide with appearances by Al Roker, Nancy O’Dell and Billy Bush.

STONE SOUP

TV Land and Nick at Nite’s Family Table: Share More Than Meals have teamed up once again with The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) will to celebrate the annual Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children on Monday, September 25.  Using the event as a jumping of point to make family dinners a more regular part of family life in the US, CASA and The Family Table have begun registering individuals to the pledge to have dinner with their family on September 25th.  CASA launched the family dining initiative in 2001 to promote the benefits of parents and kids eating dinner together.  Likewise TV Land & Nick at Nite’s three year old Family Table: Share More Than Meals campaign aims to remind people about the importance of dining and talking with one another.  TV Land and Nick at Nite will air a series of promotional spots daily in regular rotation.  CASA is based at Columbia University.  People can logon and register their commitment to dine together on Family Day at FamilyTable.info.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The BBC has appointed Andy Parfitt to head up its slate of program and content development targeted specifically to British teens 12-16.  Parfitt will also continue to serve as Controller, BBC Radio 1, a post he has held since 1998.  In making the announcement the BBC was clear to say that Parfitt is charged with creating programming across various genres including drama, comedy, music and factual content that will be available via existing broadband, TV and radio services, and does not plan to launch a new channel for the demo.  In his new role Parfitt will report to BBC’s Jana Bennett, Director/Television and as Controller, BBC Radio 1, he will continue reporting to Jenny Abramsky, Director, BBC Radio & Music.  Parfitt’s appointment is part of the BBC’s Creative Future, or editorial vision for the digital age, introduced recently by BBC Director General Mark Thompson.

Fox Searchlight Pictures has named Jeremy Steckler and Matthew Greenfield as SVPs/Production, both will report to President, Production, Claudia Lewis.

  • Steckler joins Fox Searchlight Pictures from di Bonaventura Pictures, where he spent the last 3+ years building its movie slate and serving as executive producer on DOOM and associate producer on Derailed.  Previously he worked for Polygram Filmed Entertainment and Spyglass Entertainment.
  • An indie film producer, Greenfield credits include The Motel, Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl and Star Maps, all of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where the latter two were picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight.  Previously he served as Associate Director/Feature Film Program, at the Sundance Institute.

The International Fight League (IFL), the world’s first team-based mixed martial arts organization, has tapped youth marketer Joel Ehrlich to serve on its Board of Directors.
