Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Jimmy Neutron will be kicking some tires as Nickelodeon and Chrysler enter into a multi-million dollar, multi-platform advertising and promotion partnership. For Chrysler the partnership will focus on reaching families to promote its new 2008 Town & Country Minivan, which features SIRIUS Backseat TV. Also the deal Nickelodeon and Nicktoons Network will be available on Town & Country’s SIRIUS Backseat TV and Chrysler will serve as the official sponsor of Nickelodeon’s Slime Across America Summer Tour, a 20-stop tour that kicks-off July 7, 2007. The ad campaign bows on October 1, 2007 and will be seen across a number of Nick’s platforms including on Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite TV, and its digital sites GoCityKids.com, Nickjr.com, Noggin.com, Shockwave.com as well as magazine ads in the network’s consumer publications. Custom ads featuring Nickelodeon’s animated character Jimmy Neutron will be seen on Chrysler.com, the Nick platforms above and in-theater ads, in addition to costumed character appearances at auto shows and mobile tours.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Fans were abuzz several months back about a new Transformers animated series. Official news now finds Cartoon Network and Hasbro partnering to co-develop a 2D animated series titled, Transformers Animated, which will be co-produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Slated to premiere in early 2008 on Cartoon Network US, Transformers Animated will include 26×30′ episodes as well as a 90-minute special. The new animated series will feature both new characters as well as legendary ones and, of course, Autobots will continue to go up against the evil Decepticons, all with humor and kid accessible storylines. The original Transformers animated series aired on US TV 1984-1987. And – in case you’ve forgotten Paramount/DreamWorks’ live-action Transformers feature film opens next Tuesday, July 3.
MORE KIDS STUFF
NBA star Shaquille O’Neal begins his work with kids battling childhood obesity in his new six-episode reality series, Shaq’s Big Challenge, which premieres tonight on ABC at 9p. The series follows Shaq as he works with six obese middle-school kids in Florida, in an effort to help transform them into more healthy and fit kids. In addition to working with the individual kids, Shaq and his team of experts, will go into each of the kids’ homes and schools, as well as meeting with local school and government officials to help set the kids up for success and to expand the lessons beyond these six kids to their communities. Shaq will be joined by his own physician and trainer, Dr. Carlon “Doc” Colker, nutritionist Dr. Joy Bauer (who, by the way, is really great), Food Network celebrity chef Tyler Florence, Shaq’s college coach Dale Brown, as well as a childhood obesity expert and another trainer. Produced by RDF USA, Shaq’s Big Challenge is broadcast with Spanish subtitles via secondary closed captioning. The series is based on the UK series Unfit Kids.
Program Partners has cleared the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation in more than 85% of the U.S. for a national syndication strip launch this September. New affiliates include stations from Belo, Clear Channel, Freedom, Gray, Lockwood, LIN, Schurz, Sinclair and Weigel groups. Produced by Epitome Pictures in Toronto, Degrassi: The Next Generation currently airs on The N, which will premiere new episodes of the series this summer on Friday nights at 8p, from June 29.
BRB Internacional has inked a deal Nickelodeon with for the cable and satellite TV rights to animated series Angus & Cheryl (104 x 90-seconds) for broadcast across a number of European and Latin American territories from fall 2007. Under the deal, the first broadcast deal between BRB and Nickelodeon, Angus & Cheryl will be available in Belgium, France, Holland, Italy, Latin America, Luxembourg, Portugal, Scandinavia, Spain and Switzerland. Nick will also make the series available in Holland on an open-broadcast format. Angus & Cheryl is co-produced by BRB, Screen 21 and Televisio de Catalunya y Tuba Entertainment. The series was picked up last week Radio Canada.
Noggin has acquired the animated preschool series Toot & Puddle in a deal with National Geographic Kids Entertainment (NGKE) and digital animation studio Mercury Filmworks. NGKE and Mercury has begun production on 52×11′ episodes of Toot & Puddle, which is based on the book series by author/illustrator Holly Hobbie. National Geographic Television International has also completed pre-sales for Toot & Puddle with Treehouse (Canada), TV2 (Norway), and Nickelodeon (UK, Australia and Germany). The newest Toot & Puddle book title, Let It Snow, will be published in October 2007. The holiday special, Toot & Puddle: I’ll Be Home for Christmas, which aired on Noggin December 2006, has been released on DVD by Warner Home Video.
CBBC has ordered 40 more half-hour episodes of the reality series Best of Friends from Talent Television. Currently running on CBBC and BBC One and targeted to K6-12, the series features teams of real 10-year-old friends (boys and girls) who take a range of challenges, ultimately proving how much their friends mean to them. When this new cycle is completed there will be a total of 96×30′ episodes of Best of Friends, including three seasons for the UK and five African specials. Talent Television is a subsidiary of Talent Group plc.
DECODE Entertainment has inked a broadcast deal in Germany for the preschool series, Franny’s Feet, with Disney Channel taking the pay TV rights. At the same time, Cartoon Network Korea has picked up the entire Franny’s Feet series (78×11′) and Cartoon Network Taiwan has renewed the full series. In Poland, TVP1 has picked up the second season of the series, while MediaWay takes the home video rights for the series. In the Middle East, MBC3 has renewed the series. DECODE recently inked a master toy and game license deal for Franny’s Feet with Hasbro’s Playskool.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Starz Media has inked a promotional partnership with Dole Food Company for the upcoming animated feature Space Chimps. Produced by Starz Media with Vanguard Animation and Film, Space Chimps is slated for release in 2008 by Fox. Under the terms of the promotion, Dole will place 100 million Space Chimps themed stickers on its bananas and its salads and fresh pineapples. A national freestanding insert and retailer specific ad circulars and displays will also support the movie promotion. Additionally, Space Chimps will be featured on the Dole SuperKids website (dole5aday.com), which includes educational health and nutrition materials for kids and schools. The movie is written and directed by Kirk DeMicco (Racing Stripes) at Vanguard’s Vancouver studio, with Barry Sonnenfeld and Vanguard’s John H. Williams serving as Producers.
STONE SOUP
UD Company, Inc., a subsidiary of The Upper Deck Company, has made an unsolicited buyout offer to its competitor The Topps Company. Upper Deck’s offer, valued at upwards of $425 million, would see the acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding shares of The Topps Company. The offer expires at 12:00 midnight (EST), on Tuesday, July 24, 2007, or a date to which Upper Deck and UD Company, Inc. extends the offer.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
PorchLight Entertainment has formed PorchLight Home Entertainment and appointed Gary Jones to head the division as SVP, overseeing acquisitions and sales. The new domestic home entertainment division will focus on the distribution its own new productions, acquired kids/family programming as well as programs from its library. Initial titles to be released by PorchLight Home Entertainment include: the new LeapFrog animated preschool DVD special, A Tad of Christmas Cheer (November 2007); A Christmas Carol for Annie (November 2007), from the PBS series Adventures from the Book of Virtues; The Family Holiday (December 2007) stars Dave Coulier, and will premiere on Lifetime Channel in November; and Treasure Island Kids: The Pirates of Treasure Island (December 2007) staring Randy Quaid.
RATINGS
This past Friday, June 22, marked Disney Channel’s most watched day in the network’s history in Total Day, as well as for the day against broadcast and basic cable, in Total Viewers P2+ (2.5 million), K6-11 (1.1 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.0 million). On Friday, Disney Channel was bolstered by the basic cable premiere of the movie Spy Kids 3D: Game Over (8-9:30p), the top-rated telecast for the whole day in K6-11 (1.9 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.8 million), which were up over the same time period last year by +58% and +64% respectively.
