5 Ways to Understand Your Communication Style

As a professional, how you present yourself to others is critical to your success; and although technical skills are important in doing your job well, it is how well you communicate and get along with others is the real test of your true potential.
Trust, transparency, authenticity and rapport are the four cornerstones of effective communication. Knowing that some people just naturally click with one another – and others, not so much – we can struggle to find common ground which can lead to conflict and a negative work environment.
What we don’t always remember, however, is that each of us approach the world differently and have different communication styles. In communication, we tend to speak different “languages.” Master communicators understand fully the four cornerstones of effective communication and they adapt their communication “language” to that of the other person. It doesn’t mean they would give up their native tongue (who they truly are). It just means they are willing to adapt their approach in order to most effectively engage with others. Adapting our behavioral and communication styles is one of the most important ways to apply the four cornerstones of effective communication; while also being willing to respect others and put their communication style preference first. Remember, people want to be treated the way THEY want to be treated; not the way you think they should be treated.
What are the communication and behavior styles?
No matter whose approach you study, you will find that your behavior and communication style falls into one of four categories:
The Socializer
The Commander
The Thinker
The Relator
The Socializer is open in their communication style and the focus is on people. They are enthusiastic and creative, they love to talk, love being the center of attention and they are not much for details and organization.
The Commander is closed in their communication style and the focus is on tasks. They are highly verbal, directive, know how to inspire, yet like to be in control and can be pushy.
The Thinker is closed in their communication style and the focus is on tasks. They are detailed oriented, reserved, regimented and prefers to work alone rather than with a group.

Legendary Entertainment has named Bruce Rosenblum as President of Television and Digital Media. Rosenbaum previously served as president of Warner Bros. NBC News Digital has announced that Tony Dokoupil is joining NBCNews.com as a Senior Writer. Dokoupil, who previously held Senior Writer positions at Newsweek and The Daily Beast, begins his new role in September.
Veteran TV syndicator and producer Gayle Dickie has been appointed President of IC Punch Media, Inc. and the newly created VU Television Network. Dickie will oversee the network’s day-to-day operations of their multi-platform broadcast, cable, OOHD and streaming content distribution channels. Her first appointment is James Allen Bradley as Executive Vice President of Production and Operations. Bradley will be tasked with producing original content. Dickie has also appointed Meredith Waters to the newly created position of Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Partnerships.
Ben Gerst has been named Senior Vice President of Platform Development at FOX Sports Digital, a newly created position.Gerst, formerly Executive Director of Platform Technologies at the New York Times, will play a pivotal role in the redesign and relaunch of FOXSports.com, which will be the digital hub for FOX Sports 1, America’s new sports network launching August 17.
Ryan O’Hara has joined The Madison Square Garden Company as President of Content, Distribution and Sales. Glenn Geller has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Current Programming for the CBS Network Television Entertainment Group. David Brownfield, who had been head of CBS Entertainment’s current programming department since 2004, has signed a development deal with CBS Television Studios and will begin working on the 2014-2015 broadcast season immediately.
Nightline anchor Terry Moran has been named London-based Anchor and Chief Foreign Correspondent at ABC News. As Moran makes the move abroad later this summer, he will continue to contribute to coverage of landmark Supreme Court decisions. Dan Abrams, currently a contributor on Good Morning America, is expanding his role, becoming a Nightline anchor and Chief Legal Affairs Anchor for ABC News. He will also contribute to ABC’s The Lookout.
Alphonso Van Marsh has been named Correspondent for News Services at CBS News, the network’s 24-hour television newsgathering service for CBS stations and broadcasters around the world; effective immediately. He will be based in London. Marsh formerly spent a decade reporting for CNN.
