39 Days to a New Job
The following is an interview with a good friend who just got hired.
How did you make your resume & Cover Letter stand out?
I have spent a LOT of time on my resume over the past few years which I believe has paid off. I have researched, rewritten, reworked, and edited it over and over again. The biggest change I made to my resume to help it stand out was to list my major events at the top before everything else. It made sense to point out my biggest accomplishments in the events industry. I think it is an eye catcher when reviewing multiple resumes because of the Event Titles as well as it looks different than the standard resume.
Did you use a profile or objective statement?
Objective Statement
How much did you know about the company and did you research prior to writing your resume and cover letter, if so, where did you find your research?
I knew quite a bit. I researched mostly on their website and Google and also spoke with a few people who worked for or knew someone who worked for.
Did you use any social networks to get information on the company or its culture?
Tried to search LinkedIn, but I would say for the most part no.
Did you research anything different for the resume and cover letter compared to the interview?
Oh yes. I researched completely different for the two. Resume and Cover Letter I researched the job and pulled key words from the description online. For the interview I researched more about the company and what their mission is and who they are and why they are different, etc.
How did you handle the obstacle of being out of state and did they seem to be overly concerned with that?
They were not concerned but were not willing to pay for my relocation. This was noted in the job description so I knew this going into it. They asked if I would have any trouble relocating and I assured them no.
Did you ever discuss relocation fees, if so, who started the discussion?
No
How long after you sent resume and cover letter did you hear from them and how did they contact you?
I heard back from them 3 days later and they contacted me via email. At this time they asked me three questions:
1.) Will you require support from SEI to obtain a work permit, visa status or work authorization in order to begin or continue employment with SEI?
2.) What is your current or most recent compensation (please list your current base salary and bonus separately)?
3.) What are your expectations with regards to base salary & bonus?
I heard back from them six days later for an interview.
Did they ask for a phone interview or anything else in-between the initial contact and the first interview?
They asked some additional questions as far as my expectations in salary and ability to work legally in the U.S. but my first interview was in person.
How many interviews did you have and who interviewed you?
I came to the offices for three sets of interviews. I first met with three members of upper management. The second interview I met with two other managers. for the final interview, I met with an internal client, a manager from the first interview and a manager from the second interview.
Did you participate in any group or panel interviews or just one on ones?
Only one on ones
How much and what kind of contact did you have with the company in-between interviews and how much time was there from one interview to the other?
2/16 received email to sign up for interview on 2/28
3/1 received email to sign up for second round interviews on 3/9
3/10 received email to sign up for final round interviews on 3/17
Received phone call on 3/18 with an offer
When was salary discussed and was there any negotiations?
Discussed in first email. They wanted to know exactly what my base and bonus was because when I applied I lumped it together due to the fact that I was underpaid at my last job. They also wanted to know what I expected to make base and bonus. The actual offer didn’t come until I spoke with the Director the day after she offered me the job.
Did you have multiple interviews in one day or each interview on separate days?
Multiple on one day. Four at the most in one day.
Did you send a thank you note to each of the people who interviewed you?
I sent an email on the same day and followed it up with a thank you note in the mail the next day.
Any part of the interview process that surprised you?
The first email asking the money question was a huge shock to me! I was also surprised at how corporate the process was but that is only because I came from a small office of 15 or so managers. Here there are 2,000 plus employees. The HR department is very well organized and highly professional. I was also surprised that the more I was myself and the calmer I stayed, the better I did.

Four Powerful Actions of a Great leader
by Diane Allen and Mary Kay Wedel
So much has been written on the topic of leadership. Depending on what lens you look through to define a leader, many different definitions can emerge. Here are four critical actions that will set you apart as a great leader and have you achieve success for yourself and others.
The Ability to Visualize the Future: Using your right brain creativity to imagine possibilities. A leader captures “what can be” through visualization of ideas, structures, strategies and results.
Set Ambitious Goals: Goal setting takes many forms. Consider using the HARD Goals framework from Mark Murphy, Leadership IQ:
- Heartfelt– the goal has an emotional attachment. It is felt at your core.
- Animated–it is motivated by your vision.
- Required–you know that there is a strong sense of urgency and that you have no other choice but to start acting on it right here, right now.
- Difficult–the greatest achievements come from the toughest challenges; reaching the goal will leave you feeling stronger, smarter, and more fulfilled.
Devise an Effective Course of Action: Once strategies and goals have been established, the work of achieving those goals begins. A leader who can help others identify the right resources and anticipate the unanticipated brings extraordinary value to an organization. This is also a place to ask the right questions.
Inspire Others to Enthusiastically Contribute: Without effective followers, there is no leadership. Even in the midst of the many challenges to achieving a worthwhile goal, a great leader is able to keep others steady, committed, and motivated to do more than was anticipated. This is the essence of great leadership. Of course, all actions are inter-dependent. But if a leader cannot inspire others, the end result will always be less than what could have been. Research demonstrates that inspired and engaged people do their best thinking and their best work.
How can you demonstrate great leadership if you do not have an official title? Identify situations in which you have demonstrated sound leadership in a professional or personal situation. Don’t overlook leadership roles in your family. Families form the basis of our earliest experience with leadership. What worked? What was comfortable? What was challenging? By answering these questions honestly, you will be able to gain an accurate assessment of your leadership ability. Regardless of where you are on the continuum, there is always room for growth.
Mary Kay Wedel and Diane Allen are seasoned executives, coaches, trainers and the Managing Partners of Choice Leaders Consulting Group LLC ( www.choiceleaders.com ). They offer comprehensive Leadership Development Programs and Executive Coaching for Management Teams and Senior Leaders focused on strategic thinking, communications and coaching skills.
If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
As with any job, initial responsibilities change as your time with the company progresses. It is easy to find yourself doing much more work than when you first began. When it is time for your annual review, what is the best method to use when negotiating a change in your salary and should you ask for more than what you want in order to negotiate the amount down with your supervisor?
Whenever you ask for a salary increase, it is best to come from a position of strength. There are two things to consider: the value of the position and your personal value in performing the job. Be able to demonstrate concrete, tangible accomplishments that you did to add value to the organization. Consider how you saved the company money, how you improved productivity, or how you developed others who are now adding real value. Show how you use higher level skills than when you were first hired, along with your critical thinking skills. Then you must consider how you can continue to add value in the job. That means knowing the needs of the organization as they relate to the job you perform. If your company has a formal pay range system, this information will serve to show how your position can be re-classified. When negotiating, it is often best to request the ideal salary you would like, knowing that you have some room to negotiate downward.
I’m a female that dresses more on the masculine side but professional and I feel that this and my sexuality although not questioned are factors for me not getting the job. Even though I conduct myself well and I’m qualify for the position. How do you think I should handle this when going on job interviews?
Whether we agree or not, appearance and impressions count, especially in a first interview. When doing a job search it is helpful to research the culture of the company and their views on diversity, including sexual orientation. Companies with a strong commitment to diversity tend to hire individuals from all types of backgrounds, because they understand the benefits of having such a diverse workforce. Now onto the style of dress: Consider asking trusted colleagues what they think about your style of dress. Does it connote professionalism? Is it gender-neutral? Many females wear pant suits and they are very professional. If you add a piece of jewelry that complements the suit, and a pair of plain pumps, you are likely to give a very professional and gender-neutral appearance.
