Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
06.01.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 1, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
18 years ago, I heard of a business, a mythical vocation that would take care of your worst nightmare, for a small fee. I did not believe that such a place existed, and even if it did, could they really be as transcendent as I had heard?
I am happy to tell you that they did exist, and still do. The business is called Wiggin’s Auto Tag and they dealt with the Department of Motor Vehicles, so you don’t have to.
Oh Joy! The end of ceaseless hours, standing in the wrong line, losing a day, perhaps three, and all for such a small fee. I would have paid triple what they were asking, and smiled.
I talked to the owner and asked him how he could stand the drudgery of dealing with the DMV, day in and day out. He told me once he understood the workings of the DMV, once he became an expert, it was the easiest money he ever made.
Why do I tell you this? Because this business model is a template that anyone can follow. If you are unemployed, think about your last couple of jobs prior to the recession. Determine which part of those jobs, everyone hated to do. And own it.
Companies are more than willing to sub-contract the awful jobs that the full time employees loath to do. Think of being able to walk into a CEO’s office and say, “I can accomplish these tasks more efficiently and for less money.” These are two things CEO’s love to hear, and if it can raise worker morale at the same time, bonus.
Talk to the folks you used to work with, ask people in your social network, email people on LinkedIn within your industry, most will be willing to tell you the worst part of their job. Find a common theme or trend, determine the specifics, and learn it. Do it. Become an expert in it. Then sell it.
Economic News
Europe is not helping. While America has been enjoying a mild though steady rebound, Greece, Britain and other countries in Europe have not been doing nearly as well. As the pessimism continues to grow oversees, the ripple effect has hit home. According to the CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index, job offers took a small step backwards in May. Though the May 2010 index score of 89 is a great deal better than it was a year ago, (56.6), May is usually a very strong month for new hires, which makes concern for the letdown more significant.
Next week: Asking for help.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
Rumors persist in the job seeker space about invisible keywords in resumes that is, the practice of loading the margins of one’s resume with keywords, and changing the font color to white, thus making the words invisible on the page.
Is this a good idea? Some experts seem to think it’s a smart idea and can help land candidates those coveted interviews; others believe it ultimately hurts a candidate’s chances more times than it helps.
To briefly explain:
More and more companies are using applicant tracking software (ATS) to sort through resumes and select the most qualified candidates for a job opening. For anyone not familiar with ATS software, it scans resume for two reasons:
1) To parse information and create candidate profiles
2) To pull out keywords that match a listing’s job requirements
Based on the scanned resume, the ATS then ranks candidates based on how good of a fit each candidate is for the open position.
When using hidden keywords, the candidate loads up as many keywords that he or she thinks the software is scanning for on a particular job. Those words are then placed in the margins of the resume and turned invisible (by selecting white for the font color as previously mentioned).
Supporters of using invisible keywords maintain that the ATS will pick up on these and award candidates more points, moving their resumes to the top of the list as a best match.
In theory, this practice of hiding keywords, sometimes known as “white fonting,” should work. But in today’s world, more and more companies are selecting the most up-to-date technology available to them. And that technology will most likely scan resumes and create an individual user profile and, in the process, will unmask the “white fonted” words. Those words will then appear as jibberish in the candidate profile, and in the information forwarded to the hiring manager. Then, instead of raising the chances of an individual candidate getting an interview, it does the exact opposite.
My advice for job seekers is this: instead of employing hidden keywords, utilize different resume versions targeted at each job type you are searching for. This will probably require customization, and specifically working in the keywords from the listing into your previous job descriptions something you would have done anyway if you were loading up on secret keywords.
Remember, as technology evolves, systems are doing a better job of not just ranking on keywords but more your entire body of work and its conceptual relevancies to any given positions. So while key words may help, it’s the experience on your resume matching the job description that counts. Even if you can change your resume for every job, my advice is to have a section that provides an overview, this area can be easily modified to point out the qualities and skills that match the job description in a more ethical way than hiding fields which may come back as a negative.
Most importantly, remember to only use keywords for the skills you actually have and can talk about in an interview. Hidden or not, if you list it, you should have it.

I have noticed that jobs with the title coordinator seem little more than someone who opens mail or has other entry level responsibilities. Are there any other job titles I should be cautious about?
Job titles can definitely be misleading sometimes, but I don’t think there is a particular set you should always stay away from. It all depends on the company listing the job. Unfortunately, some companies will purposely use a more attractive title to get people to apply for a less attractive position.
It’s important to remember the same title can carry two completely different job descriptions. For instance: “Account Manager” is often used to describe a strictly sales position. Just as often, an Account Manager can be a customer service role, with no sales responsibility at all. Both are accurate job titles, but they are very different in job description. Your best chance at finding the right position is to take advantage of any advanced search options that either the ATS or the Job board offers. Most of these tools offer searches such as keyword, job category, skills and a lot more. I would also take advantage of the saved searches that both company websites and job boards offer. This allows you to setup a search for that ideal position and be notified when it hits the site.
I was fired from my last job, unfortunately not because of the economy, I was in over my head. Do I leave that position off my resume or try to explain what happened? I don’t know what my past employer will say to others if they call about me, what should I do?
That’s a great question with no easy answer since either way it could be judged as a negative. Typically both short term employment experiences, as well as gaps on a resume would lead to employers possibly question that time period.
The answer depends on the situation if your tenure with that company was a short period of time (such as weeks or just a few months) than most likely there’s nothing gained by sharing this experience. Though, be prepared to explain the gap on your employment history.
In most cases, even though the position wasn’t right for you and, as you said, you were in over your head, you still may have learned a great deal from this employer and therefore it could be worth listing in your employment history. It’s important to remember that “the right fit” is a two-way street. As long as you were truthful in the information in your resume and the information you shared with the recruiter and /or hiring manager, then a large part of the onus is on the person who hired you. You, of course, should not place blame, but if that is the case, then hopefully the person interviewing you will pick up on that. Regardless, remember that experience is a major driver and depending on the next position you’re applying for, it may be the difference between you and another applicant.
