~ MORE STUFF ~

Showtime brings back a new season of Fight Camp 360: Inside The Super Six World Boxing Classic tomorrow night at 11p. The unique boxing tournament, featuring six guys involved in a point-based, round-robin style competition, will end after five episodes by crowning the world’s newest super middleweight fighter.

Over the course of the long weekend as we saluted our veterans for the work done on our behalf, the television and film industry lost four extraordinary notables …

Dennis Hopper, 74, considered Hollywood’s bad-boy rebel, died last Saturday at his home in Venice, CA. His cause of death was due to metastasized prostate cancer. Dennis’ film career was punctuated by film roles where he played the drugged-out, crazy misfit in such symbolic films as Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet. His early career included roles in the 1955 NBC television series Medic; a small film role in Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean; and a role in Giant that gave him a rising star status, appearing opposite James Dean again as well as Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. Following a battle of wills with director Henry Hathaway on the set of From Hell to Texas, Dennis left Hollywood and moved to New York and studied under Lee Strasberg for several years. He performed on stage in New York and also appeared in more than 100 episodes of television programs. In 1961, he married Brooke Hayward, the daughter of producer/agent, Leland Hayward and legendary actress Margaret Sullavan and soon after was granted film roles again. He appeared in such films during this period as The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Hang ‘Em High (1968). Soon after, Dennis was introduced to Peter Fonda and the pair along with others concocted the cross-country theme of Easy Rider which won the prize for best first film at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival and gave Dennis an Oscar nomination for writing and the then unknown Jack Nicholson an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. From this film stemmed much of Dennis’ famed drug use to a point that in a later interview, he said drugs almost killed him and also turned him into a “professional pariah.” After a failed follow-up project titled The Last Movie (1971), Dennis took mostly small film parts until his appearance in the 1979 Apocalypse Now. In the 1980s, Dennis became sober and worked on several film roles per year. Some of his more celebrated roles were in the films Hoosiers (1986), Blue Velvet (1986), Speed (1994), Waterworld (1995) as well as the first season of FOX’s series 24 (2002). Beyond acting, Dennis pursued photography and his intimate photos of such celebrities as Ike and Tina Turner, Andy Warhol and Jane Fonda were part of gallery shows and collected in a book titled 1712 North Crescent Heights. In more recent years, Dennis starred in a slew of films, no less than six were released in 2008, as well as headlining the television series Crash on premium network Starz where he portrayed a music producer. Dennis was married a total of five times and is survived by four children: Marin Hopper, his daughter by Brooke Hayward; Ruthanna Hopper, his daughter by Daria Halprin; Henry Lee Hopper, his son by Katherine LaNasa; and Galen, his daughter by Victoria Duffy. Dennis was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this past March 26, surrounded by his friends including Jack Nicholson and David Lynch, director of Blue Velvet.

Gary Coleman, former child star of the successful television series Diff’rent Strokes, died last Friday in Provo, Utah. He was 42. Last Wednesday, Gary was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with a head injury sustained from a fall. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and died following removal from life support, according to a hospital spokesperson. Over the years, Gary was in and out of hospitals due to his ongoing congenital kidney disease for which the treatment was said to stunt his growth. Gary was 4 feet, 8 inches tall and had a kidney transplant at age 5 and another when he was 16. On Diff’rent Strokes (which ran from 1978-1985 on NBC and from 1985-1986 on ABC), Gary played Arnold, one of two underprivileged African-American brothers adopted by a rich New Yorker. His wit and one-liners such as “What you talkin’ about, Willis?” charmed TV audiences. Gary though, looking back at his childhood said he felt used. He sued his parents and former manager in 1989 for misappropriating his trust fund and in 1999 he filed for bankruptcy protection. In the 1990s, Gary was arrested numerous times for assault and disorderly conduct and a year ago on alleged domestic violence charges. He and his wife, Shannon, appeared on the reality TV show Divorce Court in 2008 though remained together. As a small boy, Gary did a TV commercial for a Chicago bank and was spotted by an agent for television producer Norman Lear. The project that initially took him to Hollywood, a new version of Our Gang, never got off the ground and he was cast in Diff’rent Strokes instead which catapulted him to fame and fortune. After his TV run, Gary appeared in approximately 20 television shows and a few feature films including the 2009 Midgets vs. Mascots. Also in 2003, Gary was one of the 135 candidates involved in the California gubernatorial recall election; he ranked #8 overall. Gary’s survivors include his wife and his estranged parents.

Eddie Garrett, 82, who played a photographer in the Los Angeles coroner’s office opposite Jack Klugman on NBC’s Quincy, M.E. died May 13 at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA following a stroke. Eddie also appeared with Jack Klugman on another series, ABC’s The Odd Couple and had small roles on TV’s Ironside, Batman and Medical Center among other shows as well as roles in the films Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and Dirty Harry (1971). Eddie also wrote the 2006 book, I Saw Stars . . . In the 40’s and 50’s featuring photographs he took of Hollywood celebrities when he was a kid hanging out at the studios. Eddie is survived by his wife, Maggie Hartshorn and two step-daughters.

Dancer-turned-actress Eugenia Paul, 75, died May 24 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL. Eugenia appeared is several TV shows in the 1950s including Zorro and other TV westerns such as The Adventures of Jim Bowie, The Lone Ranger and Death Valley Days. She also appeared in the films The Ten Commandments (1956), The Disembodied (1957) and Gunfighters of Abilene (1960). In the mid-1950’s Eugenia met and married Robert Strauss, heir to the Pep Boys auto store chain and moved to Florida where she became an avid philanthropist and supporter of the arts and animal welfare. Eugenia is survived by her husband, Robert, three children and three grandchildren.
