Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
06.18.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 18, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Jim Goss, SVP of Creative Services, On-Air Promotions & Short Form Programming, INSP.

What was your first leadership position?
In the early ’80s, I headed up drama series promotion at NBC. I had half a dozen writer producers reporting to me and we worked on shows like ER, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere and Baywatch. I learned at that job that the role of a manager is to be a teacher. It’s to help guide and train your staff; in that particular job, it meant helping people be better storytellers, and make better writing decisions.

What’s your management style?
I ask questions that will help people find the answers themselves. That’s probably the best way to do it. If you can lead them to solve their own problems, you give them the tools that are lasting. It instills confidence and makes them better managers and better creators, too.

What kinds of questions do you ask when hiring people?
The key thing for me is to find people who have vision and passion, regardless of the position I’m hiring for. Even in a low-level job, you can have vision. In the TV business, very often you have people with Masters’ degrees and they’re being asked to do Craft Services. But if you step into the job saying, I’ll be the very best, people will take notice.Virtually every manager has paid their own dues and they will recognize that in others.

What have you found is the most challenging part of being a leader?
The hardest thing for me is when you want talented people to stay longer, even when you know they need to leave and move to the next level… it’s knowing the best time to make that happen. You hate to lose those folks, but you’re happy when you see their success.
