Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/17/08
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The $3.85 billion Sirius Satellite Radio/XM Satellite Radio merger limped forward toward approval on Monday when FCC Chairman Kevin Martin laid out a series of conditions he would like to see met before greenlighting the deal. Conditions include an a la carte channel provision (sound familiar?,) a price freeze for existing subscribers for the next 36 months and allowing third-party manufacturers to build and sell tuners for the service. XM has about 9.3 million subscribers and 170 channels and Sirius serves 130 channels to 8.6 million customers.
Multiplatform international sports broadcaster WCSN formed a joint venture with NBC Sports hoping to build a larger audience around sports largely overlooked by existing sports brands including Gymnastics, Track and Field, Swimming and Biking. The Universal Sports brand will replace WCSN’s linear digital channel later this summer – currently in about 2 million digital multicasts homes – and launch as the ad-supported web portal Universal Sports.com in July, according to Chairman & CEO Claude Ruibal, who will continue to manage the company. The first fruits of the venture will be live coverage of Olympic Trials on June 19 on WCSN.com.
NBC‘s Local Media Digital arm plans to take over management of NBC 10 O&O’s local station web sites from Internet Broadcasting by year end, we confirmed yesterday. NBC has made a raft of hires in recent months to help execute the transfer, notes Silicon Alley Insider, including New York Daily News editor Gregory Gittrich, Metacafe sales executive Mort Greenberg and Avenue A | Razorfish technologist Matt Saunders. IB says it will continue to work with the group to provide support and services as part of its unbundled products strategy.
Here’s a new twist on the straight-to-DVD model. Sony will release a new series called Angel of Death in 8-minute increments over the web on various Sony-affiliated sites early next year before releasing it direct to DVD, adding scenes that help tie the whole thing together. The budget for the project is a little over $1 million, according to The WSJ. The model will be replicated with 4-6 additional titles next year.
NBCSports.com was one of three online outlets golf fans turned to yesterday to watch the Tiger/Rocco showdown while at work, as rights holders seemingly loosened their ties to let the largest audience possible tune in. ESPN 360.com, available to select ISP customers, and The USGA’s IBM-powered U.S. Open site also streamed the full round. Midway through the round NBCSports.com began experiencing video delays and other problems then eventually linked to the USGA’s live stream.
The next big event ESPN is gearing up for in terms of digital coverage is Wimbledon. A new 6-year agreement with the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club enables ESPN to broadcast all day matches on ESPN360.com with 5 streams of coverage beginning June 23. Wimbledon coverage can also be found on ESPN.com and, for the first time, on ESPN Interactive Television, featuring a 6-screen mosaic of matches.
G4 will broadcast the 2008 North American playoffs of the Championship Gaming Series on July 16,19, 26 and August 2. It’s first time the CGS competitive video gaming competition has landed cable coverage in the U.S.
Outdoor Channel relaunched its website with a new broadband players and some basic social networking features. The player features mostly clips of shows rather than full episodes.
Collaborative online entertainment studio Filmaka is teaming with WhatOnEarthisGoingON? to produce a socially relevant online channel featuring short form video, to be distributed online in August by MSN. Filmaka is launching a series of quarterly competitions to motivate its community to contribute, awarding $1,500 cash each quarter then an additional $10,000 to make a short film on a socially relevant theme.
The Seattle International Film Festival‘s MyFestival contest with IndieFlix concluded on Sunday with a special screening of the winning entries, chosen by users among 10 independently-produced features and 10 shorts. Perfect Sport, directed by Anthony O’Brien, won the $1,500 prize for Best Feature and Robbie’s Withdrawal, directed by John Burish, won $500 for best short. The contest received more than 22,000 views from 11,000+ unique visitors in 38 countries.
Do-it-yourself online video ad platform Jivox closed on $10.7 million of series A financing led by Opus Capital, joined by Helion Venture Partners. Jivox has cobbled together a network of travel, financial, real estate and other sites to help smaller companies reach an audience of 40 million unique viewers with video ads they make themselves.
IPTV technology provider KIT digital is working with SNTV to package content from The Euro 2008 soccer tournament and the Summer Olympic games for global broadband and mobile providers. As part of the package, offered through KIT’s Kamera subsidiary, subscribers receive 10 daily clips of events online or on their mobile handsets including highlights and pre- and post-match interviews.
Men’s lifestyle site CraveOnline launched a new web series called Crave Soundcheck, featuring live performances by up and coming bands as well as community outreach features.
Maryland-based WeatherBug launches a new section on its desktop weather app today targeted for beachcombers and boaters. The beach and boating section includes detailed weather data including average coastal water temperatures, UV index and weather information based on city and U.S. zip code, along with hourly, daily and weekly forecasts.
JVC rolled out three new consumer-grade Everio HD camcorders, featuring 1080p, 60 frames/second signal output and improved shot-response time. The GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30 are the first dual-format AVCHD/mpeg2 recorders, offering a plug-in allowing users to edit using Apple’s iMovie HD 6 or Final Cut Pro 5 or 6 for the Mac.
Check out The Sundance Channel‘s Big Ideas for a Small Planet tonight at 9p for a report on Green Gadgets.

Billionaire investor Car Icahn told Reuters the Yahoo/Google ad sharing agreement “might have some merit,” in his first public comments since the deal was announced. Meanwhile dissident Yahoo shareholder Eric Jackson urged fellow shareholders to strike a comprise with Icahn to make the best of a bad situation. The Yahoo/Google tie up may be in danger if Icahn wins his proxy battle in August and is able to replace the Yahoo board.
Online video ad network YuMe struck a deal with Microsoft to sell MSN’s unsold video ad inventory across its network of thematic channels. YuMe’s software includes a contextual targeting system that helps match ads with videos that best fit targeted demographics. The deal expands upon an agreement Microsoft and YuMe has placing ads through Microsoft’s Windows Media Center platform.
Video and web 2.0 social networking applications will push global IP traffic up to 44 exabytes/month by 2012, compared to less than 7 exabytes/month generated in 2007, according to the new Cisco Visual Networking Index forecast. (That’s an annual growth rate of 46%!) Internet video jumped from 12% of the global consumer internet traffic in 2006 to 22% in 2007. Video on demand, IPTV, P2P video, and streaming video are forecast to account for nearly 90% of all consumer IP traffic in 2012. Mobile data traffic will also roughly double each year from 2008 to 2012. Click here for a white paper on the study.
Robert Oswaks was upped to President of Marketing for Sony Pictures Television, reporting to President Steve Mosko with network, syndication, cable and new media responsibilities under his purview. Additionally:

- Steve Gadecki was named Senior Manager/New Media Marketing
- Kendra Moore was upped to Director/Digital Marketing
- Allison Higgins has become Senior Manager/Mobile Marketing and
- Rachel Mizuno was promoted to VP/Affiliate Sales
Internet Broadcasting appointed former AOL executive Luke Edson as Chief Revenue Officer, overseeing national ad sales, business development, revenue strategy and advertising systems. Luke will be based out of New York and will report directly to President and CEO David Lebow, his former colleague at AOL.
Tribune Interactive named former Clear Channel Radio sales executive Kim Johnson as SVP/Local Sales. Kim was also a former waitress at Knockers-The Place for Hot Racks and Cold Brews, according to Tribune’s latest tongue-in-cheek press release. She reports to Marc Chase, President.
NBC.com and the T. Howard Foundation announced the creation of an intern outreach program for 2008. The first four paid interns will spend the summer working with NBC.com management in the areas of Broadband, Content, Marketing and Online Community.
Echo Bridge Entertainment is ramping up its digital distribution operations, appointing Kyle Kaczmarek as Head the new Digital Distribution division. Prior to Echo Bridge, Kyle held various posts in Warner Bros.’ digital distribution business.
In-mall digital video advertising network Adspace Networks hired Brady Granier as the Account Director for their California office.
The Associated Press ruffled feathers in the blogosphere after filing a takedown notice asking The Drudge Retort to remove blog posts containing snippets of (attributed) AP articles with links back to the original stories. The AP retreated somewhat in an interview quoted in The New York Times, but the move has sparked a debate over what constitutes as fair use on the internet, and whether or not news aggregation sites such as Digg, Mixx and NewsGator may be next in the line of fire.
