Cyn opsis: Classified
Advantage
06.15.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 15, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
I was in New Jersey this past weekend at an employment conference, and after I finished my presentation, a man in his early 40’s approached me, saying, my information was out of date. He said since companies are hiring again, and all the extra work that was required six months ago, was no longer needed.
I might expect this thought process from a recent college graduate, but I was surprised by this man’s approach. His confidence drifted through arrogance and settled in stupidity. But being the diplomat that I am, rather than openly disclose this man as a dolt, I told him a story.
When I was a senior in high school, there was one college I wanted to attend more than any other. They invited me down for an interview. There I sat, and the interviewer asked me why should I be accepted? I told him my high school stats, which were majestic. He looked at me, then turned around and picked up dozens of manila folders and placed them on his desk. He told me that every one of those files represented perspective students that had better grades and SAT scores than I did. He stared at me, and then asked me again, why I should be accepted.
I told him of my extracurricular activities, the sports I played, where I volunteered and where I worked. I told him everything I could think of, because apparently, my academic stats, though impressive for high school, were just average for college.
I got in.
So listen up dolts, this happens almost every time that someone looks for a new job or a promotion. The people who are already there, are going to be impressive. The people looking for the same position you are, are going to be impressive. You have to figure out what makes you different, what makes you stand out from the crowd, and make sure you communicate why you would be the best person for the job.
Next week: What do we want?
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
This is the story of a man who really wanted a job. For 5 years he had run a successful small web design firm in Gainesville, getting clients by word of mouth and by befriending small business owners. But he had moved to New York and this was a different kettle of fish. “In New York all the doors are locked” he told me. “There was no dropping by and making friends, and I had no word of mouth. New York kicked my butt. So I started looking for a proper corporate job in web design.”
He started with Craigslist. It had worked well for him in Florida and he was comfortable with it. But he only got back a couple of thank-you notes. He tried Monster and other job sites: from them he got back nothing but spam.
“So I created two fake job postings on Craigslist* to see what the competition was like. I got 200-300 emails in the first 6 hours all super-qualified. I looked at what they had written and I created a template letter of my own, based on the best of what I saw.”
“I gave up on the other sites and focused 100% of my energy on Craigslist, refining my search and hitting refresh, refresh so I could see the latest jobs. As soon as a new posting appeared I sent my application. And I knew my letter was good because I had studied the best ones out there.”
” But my experience with the fake postings, the hundreds of applications, made me think that an employer is going to get bored after reading just 30 or so. So I realized that my own job was to be number one in their inbox. I was refreshing my search every ten minutes. But this wasn’ t quick enough. This was a giant race with 200 people, all starting at the same time. Seconds matter if you want to be the first.”
So instead of refreshing the web page and then going to his mail to apply, he set up an RSS feed from his Craigslist search directly into his mail client, so he could get from the posting to his response in fewer clicks.
“In a week or so I had it down to a science. I was super-comfortable with it. I deleted any new jobs when I got up in the morning, as I was already too late for them. I had the bugs removed and everything was virtually perfect. I figure I had my response time down to about 7 seconds after a job had posted.”
Driven by his drive to be first in the inbox, the system quickly produced results. In the following week he received four requests for interviews. One of them was at MLB.com, a dream position where he now happily works.
*I report the facts. But is it ethical to make fake postings? Smart? What do you think?

If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
I’m not sure my past employer would give me a great recommendation, and I’ve read that a third party should call and ask. Easier said than done with caller id, getting through to them; do I just have someone block their id, call and call again until they get a hold of my last boss, and then pretend to be someone looking to hire me for a job? Is this really the best way?
I feel that this fake hirer idea could too easily backfire, and there is really no upside. If your friend is outed, which may well happen, you will have killed any residual goodwill your former boss may feel towards you.
Why not ask him yourself: “Would you be comfortable if I gave you as a reference? Would you say good things about me?” And then you need to read between the lines of his response and decide whether this will pay off or not.
If you are not sure, then don’t list him as a reference come up with some other people who you are more sure of. If your next employer might call him even if you didn’t give him as a reference, then it is out of your control and a faked enquiry will not have gained you a thing.
How long can I expect a classified ad to be active? I have called many companies responding to their ads only to find they job has already been filled. One week, two weeks, 4 days? I’m confused.
Think of it this way: the hirer is interested in finding a great candidate as soon as possible and will keep evaluating responses for as long as it takes. But in this competitive market they are likely to find a great candidate sooner rather than later. So being in the first group of applicants they see is usually best.
Take it from someone who has received over 100 applications for a single job, the resume reader’s attention falls off steeply after about 30 similar apps have crossed his desk. If you are calling, then think about the poor person who has to answer 50 or more phone calls the first ones will hold the promise of solving their problem, after a half day or more of that they will get significantly less interested.
