2010 FIFA World Cup ratings update: Univision said its coverage of day two of the tournament was also record-breaking with an average of 2.6 million total viewers, 1.6 million A18-49 and 870,000 A18-34 viewers tuning in during Saturday. Univision’s World Cup coverage to date is tallying an average of 3.2 million total viewers and 1.9 million A18-49ers. The match between the US and England also pulled in an average of 4.1 million total viewers for Univision as well as 2.5 million A18-49. Nielsen further said an estimated 14.5 million US viewers watched the US-England match combined on ABC and Univision, making it the highest average audience for a men’s national team soccer game since around 15.8 million tuned in to watch the USA vs. Brazil Round of 16 game in 1994. Breaking down the demos, Nielsen also relayed 57% of the total viewers were A18-49 while 65% were 18+ males and 35% were female. AMC renewed its drama series Breaking Bad for a fourth season starring double Emmy winner Bryan Cranston. The series is produced by High Bridge Productions, Inc. and Gran Via Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television for AMC. TLC approved a sixth season of the reality series Little People, Big World featuring the Roloff family based in Portland, OR where the parents, Matt and Amy are small though three of the four children are of average height. Production on the next season is underway with new episodes slated to debut September 6. Gay Rosenthal Productions produces the series. Syfy is going for a seventh season of its reality series Ghost Hunters with 25 new episodes scheduled to premiere next year. Throughout the summer, new episodes from the Ghost Hunters franchise will air on Syfy with Ghost Hunters Academy on Wednesdays at 9p; Ghost Hunters International debuts new episodes on July 14 at 9p; and the remainder of Ghost Hunters’ season six premieres August 25 at 9p. The first half of Ghost Hunters’ season six averaged 2.6 million total viewers, 1.6 million A18-49 and 1.6 million A25-54 viewers. All three Ghost Hunters series are produced in association with Craig Piligian’s Pilgrim Films and Television. BIO Channel premieres a second season of its original celebrity-infused paranormal series Celebrity Ghost Stories and on the same night will debut a new original series, My Ghost Story featuring regular people relating their paranormal encounters on camera. Both will premiere on July 17, with Celebrity Ghost Stories at 9p followed by the series launch of My Ghost Story at 10p. Throughout 18 new episodes of Celebrity Ghost Stories, a diverse array of celebrities will describe their personal ghost stories including Joan Collins, Michael Imperioli, Donna D’Errico and Corey Feldman in the first episode. Celebrity Ghost Stories is produced by Jarrett Creative for BIO. My Ghost Story offers first-person stories as told by the real people who experienced them. This series is produced by Mark Phillips Philms & Telephison for BIO. Discovery Health kicks off its annual Baby Week programming event starting July 12 through July 16 featuring six specials and the premiere of a new original docu-drama series, NICU. In ten episodes of NICU, the series follows real families as they experience the emotional trauma of having a premature baby. The series additionally showcases doctors and nurses from top hospitals in Baltimore, San Diego and Cleveland. NICU, produced by LMNO Productions, opens July 15 at 10p with subsequent episodes airing on Thursdays at 10p. Other Baby Week programming includes one-hour specials documenting babies born under amazing circumstances such as Strange Pregnancies airing on July 12 at 9p; A Baby To Save Our Son also on Monday at 10p; Big Babies (wt) on July 13 at 9p; Too Many Babies? The First 16 Months (wt) on July 14 at 9p; Born on a Bad Day on July 15 at 9p; and The 10 Most Unbelievable Births on July 16 at 9p. This August, Oxygen Media brings back its series Bad Girls Club for a fifth edition with BGC: Miami opening August 3 at 9p. In its new season, seven Bad Girls live together in Miami where the action is filled with explosive personalities in the midst of South Beach nightclubs and an exotic locale. Bunim-Murray Productions produces the series. The following week on August 10, Oxygen premieres the new competition series Hair Battle Spectacular at 10p. Hosted by Brooke Burns, the series follows ten contestants as they battle to see who can create the biggest and best in fantasy hair design with the winner receiving a grand prize of $100,000. 3 Ball Productions produces. Early August also sees the return of The Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo. Season three opens August 3 at 11p and during the new season, viewers will catch appearances of Zoe’s high-profile celebrity clients including Gwen Stefani, Demi Moore, Molly Sims and Johnny Weir among others. Season two of The Rachel Zoe Project averaged 740,000 A18-49 viewers and a little more than 1.0 million total viewers. Original Media produces the series for Bravo. Sunday’s season two premiere of Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami on E! at 10p delivered a 3.29 rating among W18-34 and around 2.6 million total viewers. Directly after at 1030p, E! launched its new series Holly’s World which drew in 1.9 million total viewers and posted a 2.21 rating with the network’s core demo of W18-34. Jimmy Dean, former television star and founder of a sausage company bearing his name, died on Sunday at the age of 81. According to Jimmy’s wife, Donna Meade Dean, he died at his Henrico County, VA home. Jimmy is well-known to generations of TV viewers as the founder of Jimmy Dean Sausage and star of the company’s commercials as well as being a professional singer and star of The Jimmy Dean Show on ABC in the mid-1960’s. Jimmy also won a Grammy Award for his “working man” country song “Big Bad John” in 1961. Jimmy wrote the hit song along with Roy Acuff. CBS Corporation made a deal to sell WGNT-TV in Norfolk, VA, an affiliate for The CW, to Local TV Holdings, LLC. Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the deal is pending normal regulatory conditions and other approvals. Sony announced it renewed frosh talk show Dr. Oz in four top markets through the 2013-2014 television season, reports B&C. FOX renewed Dr. Oz on WNYW/New York and on WFLD/Chicago and additionally picked it up for WTXF/Philadelphia for a 2011 launch, taking the show away from CBS’ O&O KYW in Philadelphia. In Los Angeles, KABC snagged the show away from FOX’s KTTV. Dr. Oz will continue being renewed on a market by market basis rather than being picked up by station groups as a whole, as Sony opens up other markets for bidding. ION Television made an agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution to acquire the syndicated drama series Without a Trace. ION will have access to all seven seasons of the drama with 160 total one-hour episodes. Without a Trace was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and originally aired on CBS until 2009. Canada’s kelencontent sold season one of the tech-centered series Gadget Girlz to ION Life in the US with 26 half-hour episodes. ION Life additionally picked up the series Body Fuel from kelencontent with 13 half-hour episodes. kelencontent further sold its series Courage in Red with 13 half-hours to Denmark’s DRTV and Sweden’s TV4 with DRTV also acquiring season three of the travel/adventure series Departures with 41 one-hour episodes. kelencontent holds the global sales and format rights to all four series. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
TLC announced former NFL star Warren Sapp and restaurant owner and chef Art Smith will join the new season of BBQ Pitmasters as judges. The series also welcomes multiple BBQ competition champ Myron Mixon as judge. Production on the new series begins later this month through July in Los Angeles and is slated to premiere August 12 at 10p. Original Media produces the series for TLC. Tennis Hall of Famer Jimmy Connors will be a nightly analyst during the upcoming Wimbledon coverage airing on the Tennis Channel from June 21 to June 30. Connors will work with tennis champ Martina Navratilova and host Bill Macatee during the tournament’s nightly four-hour show Wimbledon Primetime starting June 21 at 7p. Connors additionally renewed his broadcast deal with Tennis Channel to work on the next US Open coverage beginning in late August. Lifetime cast Gabrielle Union for a new key role for its Army Wives series. The network is further creating an embedded pilot episode within the series’ fourth and current season for Union’s character, setting the stage for the possible spin-off of a crime drama. In the episode, Union will play Detective Gina Holt, police partner to Army Wives’ regular character, Pamela Moran (Brigid Brannagh). Union was last seen in ABC’s FlashForward series and before that on NBC’s Life. Army Wives is produced by ABC Studios and The Mark Gordon Company. Mekia Cox landed a role on NBC’s new fall spy drama Undercovers from J.J. Abrams and produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot. Cox will play Lizzy, the younger sister of the female lead who is oblivious to her family’s involvement with the CIA. Effective immediately, Discovery Communications appointed Wonya Lucas as EVP/COO for Discovery Channel and Science Channel. In her new role succeeding Tom Cosgrove who will now become President/CEO of the new Discovery, Sony and IMAX 3D Television network, Wonya will head the strategy and operations for Discovery Channel and Science Channel to ensure continued growth for the business sectors. Wonya will also oversee both networks’ research and marketing units. Previously, Wonya was CMO for Discovery Communications. She will continue to be located at Discovery Communications’ worldwide headquarters in Silver Spring, MD. The company will start an internal and external search to hire a replacement for the CMO position. Joan Gundlach was named EVP/Distribution for Hallmark Channels, comprised of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, both owned and operated by Crown Media Holdings, Inc. Joan will head a team charged with implementing new and existing distribution deals for both networks. Based in Chicago, Joan will report to Bill Abbott, President/CEO. The Inspiration Networks hired John Russo as Director/Sales for the company’s new network, Halogen. John will oversee all national advertising sales for the Halogen platform including the linear TV network, online, VOD, social networking, partnerships and mobile. Before this appointment, John worked for the ABC and FOX affiliates in Springfield, MA where he was Sales Manager. Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media) tapped Renan Cardona as the Sports Anchor for the company’s Spanish-language network Estrella TV and its local news program Noticias 62. Cardona’s appointment is effective immediately and he will join the lead anchor/news director Jesus Javier on Noticias 62, which airs daily at 12p and 9p (PT) on KRCA-TV in Los Angeles. Kerry Valentine joins Woodland Hills, CA-based Rubicon Studios as Head/Production. Kerry will supervise the daily production efforts of the studio’s complete roster of animated projects including a new season of the 3D animated children’s series Ben & Izzy. Kerry will further be involved with Rubicon’s newly-established partnership with Turner Broadcasting. Fuse added Donna Wolfe as VP/Production where she will be in charge of the music network’s creative direction and management of original productions. Donna will work closely with and report to Sal LoCurto, SVP/Programming. Most recently, Donna served as Executive Producer at Rave HD. Grey Group announced the appointment of two new VPs as Eric Levin joins Alliance, the company’s New York-based entertainment and lifestyle marketing agency as VP/Client Development and Courtney Jacobs was bumped to VP/PR and Marketing. Eric joins from Terry Hines & Associates where he served as VP/GM. Courtney has been with Alliance since 2008 and she currently manages public relations activities for such clients as Green Earth Technologies, Calgon, Guvera and Rouge Tomate. Michael Berman was upped to EVP/Programming and General Counsel with iN DEMAND to supervise all programming, business and legal affairs. Additionally, iN DEMAND promoted Brooke Smarsh to the position of VP/Business and Legal Affairs, Assistant General Counsel.
