ABC News opens its primetime summer series Primetime Nightline on June 22 at 10p starting with a five-part examination titled Beyond Belief delving into stories involving extra-sensory, the spiritual and the unbelievable. The first installment follows Juju Chang as she investigates “Twin-tuition” followed by four other Beyond Belief episodes airing on consecutive Wednesdays through July 20. Primetime Nightline airs over 13 weeks.
Buoyed by its ratings results during its first season, AMC renewed its drama series The Killing for a second run consisting of 13 episodes. The Killing’s frosh season launched April 3 with 2.7 million total viewers, and the series currently is generating the second highest premiere season for an original drama in AMC’s history. The season one finale is set to air June 19 at 10p. Fox Television Studios produces The Killing which is based on the Danish TV series Forbrydelsen; Mikkel Bondesen is the executive producer for Fuse Entertainment.
During Scott Pelley’s inaugural week as new anchor for CBS Evening News (week of June 6), the newscast averaged 5.7 million total viewers which was on par with Katie Couric’s final month as anchor. Pelley’s opening night on June 6 was the spike of the week with 6.1 million total viewers. Long before NBC premieres new fall drama The Playboy Club, one of its affiliates has decided to not air the program. NBC affiliate, KSL-TV in Salt Lake City says the drama does not fit with its mission because of its content and theme. “The Playboy brand is known internationally,” KSL President/CEO Mark Willes said in a statement. “Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand.” KSL-TV is owned by Deseret Media Companies. The Playboy Club, from 20th Television/Imagine Television is slated to air Monday’s at 10p beginning in September.
MTV rolls out two premieres this summer:
- The Challenge: Rivals – The competition series features teams of two people each who are known enemies. A total of 14 men and 14 women travel to Costa Rica to take part in the new season along with returning host, TJ Lavin. Premieres June 22 at 10p.
- Awkward – Scripted comedy about the conflict and humor of being a teen as shown through the perspective of 15-year old Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) whose life changes after a simple accident turns into a huge misunderstanding. The first of 12 half-hour episodes begins July 19 at 11p and the series will air on Tuesdays at 11p following Teen Mom.
Voice talent competition, America Sings makes its world premiere debut June 22 at 9p on GMC. Hosted by Drew Lachey, America Sings showcases a variety of singing groups such as all-male, all-female and choirs representing colleges and universities, churches, the military and more. Twelve different singing groups will be emphasized during each episode. An encore of the premiere episode will also air on June 22 at 10p.
Si TV re-launches as nuvoTV on July 4 and simultaneously the rebranded network premieres two new original series:
- Operation: Osmin – Starring Osmin Hernandez, known as the world’s most psychotic trainer who hones in on changing people’s bodies, their minds and their way of life over a grueling 30-day period. Series opens at 9p.
- Pastport: Venezuela – Wilmer Valderrama (That 70’s Show) stars in this series that follows him as he visits his homeland of Venezuela. The series focuses on famous Latinos and their journey back to their Latino roots. Series debuts at 10p.
Adventurer and naturalist Steve Backshall introduces viewers to sixty of the planet’s most treacherous creatures on the new Nat Geo WILD series, Deadly 60 premiering July 11 with back-to-back episodes at 10p and 1030p. Backshall treks to the frozen tundra to the jungles of South America finding dangerous wildlife as Baja rattlesnakes, tarantula hawk wasps to killer whales and a wolf eel. Deadly 60 is produced for Nat Geo WILD by BBC.
Season two of Sundance Channel’s original unscripted series, Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys will be set in Nashville, returning in fall 2011.
Yesterday, the first quarter 2011 advertising expenditure results were released by Kantar Media. In first quarter 2011, ad spending increased by 4.4% over last year to total $32.5 billion. In the various measured media categories, television saw some significant shifts due to sports programming ad dollars moving from broadcast networks to cable networks as well as having no Olympics or college bowl games on the broadcast networks. This shift played out as cable TV ad expenditures leapt to a +31.9% while network TV ad spending declined by -10.4%. All in all, Television Media came in at +5.3% with Spot TV down a bit at -1.2%; National Syndication up at +16.5%; and Spanish Language TV also up slightly at +0.8%. Overall Magazine Media was up by +4.5%; Newspaper Media down at -2.1%; Internet (display ads only) up double digits to +14.6%; Radio Media up a tad at +1.3%; Outdoor bumped to a +12.5%; and FSIs were down at -17.5%.
Original series 1000 Ways To Die, airing on Spike TV will be adapted into a graphic novel produced by Zenescope Entertainment, an independent comic book and graphic novel publisher. The 200-page graphic novel will available in US comic stores starting this fall to coincide with new show episodes. 1000 Ways To Die is presently in its third season on Spike and is created and produced by Thom Beers’ and his Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company.
E!’s sixth season premiere of Keeping Up With The Kardashians Sunday at 10p averaged 2.5 million total viewers and posted a 1.47 rating with A18-49 and a 2.86 rating among W18-34. Following at 1030p, the network booted up new series Ice Loves Coco which brought in 1.3 million total viewers and delivered a 1.86 rating with W18-34.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. launched a seventh linear hi-def television network called LEGACY.TV. The new network focuses on African-American history and biographies and spotlights other original programming including talk shows, news, celebrity interviews and event specials. Entertainment Studios is the owner of six other 24-hour linear hi-def TV networks: CARS.TV, COMEDY.TV, ES.TV, MYDESTINATION.TV, PETS.TV and RECIPE.TV.
Jim Thornton is the new show announcer for Wheel of Fortune. Thornton succeeds Charlie O’Donnell in this position who died last fall and was the game show’s voice announcer for 28 years. Thornton has been a guest announcer throughout Wheel’s 28th season and will take over full-time when season 29 kicks off on September 19. Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company produces Wheel of Fortune which is distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution.
NBC tagged Jessica Simpson as a celebrity mentor for its new reality competition series, Fashion Star hosted by supermodel Elle Macpherson. The premise of the series gives 14 unknown designers the chance to win a multi-million dollar contract to launch their own lines. Buyers from participating retailers are the judges on the show. Fashion Star is from E.J. Johnston and James Deutch of the Global Fashion Association; Rick Ringbakk of x5 Media and Ben Silverman, Founder/CEO of Electus.

At 8p, Univision’s Teresa did best at 1.4/5 followed by NBC’s NHL Stanley Cup Finale #5 at 1.3/6. Then at 9p, NBC’s NHL Stanley Cup coverage and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor tied for first place at 1.6/6 each and CBS’ CSI: NY repeat was #2 at 1.1/4. NBC’s NHL Stanley Cup Final Game 5 finally won the 10p hour at 1.9/6 and Univision’s La Rosa de Guadalupe was second place with 1.3/4.

Wilson Surratt rejoins CNN as Executive Producer for the network’s new weekday general news programming anchored by Erin Burnett. Wilson begins his new post immediately and is based in New York. Wilson has been with WPIX/New York as executive producer of the station’s 10p newscast since 2009.
Vlad Wolynetz tapped as President/Production with Cineflix Studios, the scripted unit of global production/distribution company Cineflix. Starting in July, Vlad will be involved in the production activities of all scripted projects for broadcasters worldwide. He reports to Glen Salzman, CEO, Cineflix Media.
CBS Television Stations hired Betty Ellen Berlamino in the newly-created role as SVP/Director of Sales. Betty will work with the group’s eight CW affiliates, three independent stations on one MyNetworkTV affiliate to spur advertising growth. She will also work with the company’s other CBS Local Media assets. Betty will report to Jim Sullivan, President/Sales for the group.
Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products finished its reorganization by naming Elizabeth Bohannon as VP/Global Brand Management, TV and Jonathan Linn as VP/Global Brand Management, Film. In their newly-minted jobs, Elizabeth and Jonathan will head brand strategy for the television and film properties owned by Fox with Elizabeth overseeing Glee, Family Guy and The Simpsons and Jonathan leading Diary of a Wimpy Kid and other classic and film franchises as Alvin and the Chipmunks, Avatar and more. Both Elizabeth and Jonathan report to Pam Kunick-Cohen, SVP/Global Brand Management. Furthermore, Nan Staddon was named as VP/Strategy and Financial Planning where she will report to Robert Marick, EVP, Fox Consumer Products.
Canoe Ventures added six members to its advisory board charged with assisting Canoe creation of enhanced advertising solutions for television.
