Cynopsis: Kids!
06/13/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Tom Online Inc., a Chinese wireless Internet company, has inked a deal to acquire Infomax, a wireless entertainment company, for a price tag of an estimated $75 million. In purchasing Infomax, Tom Online greatly increases its TV distribution reach in China, which already numbered in the hundreds of millions of households. Through its TV media partnership, Infomax has been providing wireless interactive products and services to 200+ Chinese TV stations for the last three years. In summer 2004 Tom Online acquired Treasure Base, a move that made Tom the exclusive wireless content partner of China’s most watched sports channel.
DIC Entertainment has acquired Copyright Promotions, a privately-owned European licensing agency. CPLG will continue to be based in London and will operate as a stand-alone agency under its CEO, Kirk Bloomgarden. CPLG currently represents the licensing rights of a range of entertainment and sports entities including DreamWorks Animation, MGM, Marvel, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox, Viacom and The Football Association. The company has also created European licensing programs for brands such as Shrek, Dora the Explorer, Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, Peanuts, The Simpsons, Star Trek among others.
Sesame Workshop has announced its plans to establish a non-governmental organization with the aim of developing new strategies and partnerships for Galli Galli Sim Sim, its joint multi-platform educational effort with Turner India to further ensure the series educates and engages preschoolers across India. The TV series Galli Galli Sim Sim is slated to launch later this year in India on both Cartoon Network and POGO. Based in New Delhi, the NGO will support Galli Galli Sim Sim’s outreach programs, which are targeted specifically to underprivileged kids and their parents, and to manage exiting and new partnerships including those with funding partners, consumers, government agencies, broadcasters, educational institutions and the series production team. Turner India contributed funds toward the founding of the NGO.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The Imagination Movers, a kid-focused music group out of New Orleans, is developing a new preschool TV series for Playhouse Disney, which is slated to bow on Disney Channel next year. The series will feature songs, stories and skits and star five band members of The Imagination Movers as “blue-collar brainstormers” who work together to solve puzzles, problems and the like. The Imagination Movers, who also have a deal with Disney Records, is comprised of Rich Collins, Scott Durbin, Dave Poche and Scott “Smitty” Smith. Currently on tour here the band’s fans (kids and adults) actually have their own nick name, they are known as Gearheads.
The UK comedy team of Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders has joined the cast of Coraline, Laika Entertainment’s first CG/stop-motion animated feature, which is based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name. French and Saunders will lend their voices to Miss Forcible and Miss Spink respectively, the eccentric neighbors of the young Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning). The movie also stars Teri Hatcher in the dual role as Coraline’s Mom and as Other Mother. French and Saunders were part of the UK comedy group The Comic Strip and went on to create/co-star in the TV series Girls on Top and French & Saunders. The duo is probably best known around the world for the TV comedy Absolutely Fabulous that is based on their original idea and in which Saunders starred (Eddy Monsoon) and wrote. A Laika Entertainment production in association with Pandemonium Films, Coraline was adapted for the screen by Gaiman and Henry Selick, the latter who will also serve as the movie’s Director along with co-director Mike Cachuela. Focus Features holds the worldwide distribution rights Coraline.
