Yesterday, the broadcast networks ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, TeleFutura, Telemundo and Univision revealed their plans to offer additional content ratings tools to give parents more decision-making power for their family’s TV viewing. Parents will be able to use the TV ratings system when children watch broadcast television programs via the internet. The networks will offer the ratings information for all full-length entertainment programs that stream on their websites. Each broadcast company will determine its own systems and the TV ratings will appear at the beginning of full-length video programs and also in the online programming descriptions. Network websites will additionally include or link to ratings system information. These new ratings will go into effect starting December 1, 2012.
During yesterday’s ABC’s Good Morning America, co-host Robin Roberts announced she has been diagnosed with MDS or myelodysplastic syndrome, a disease of the blood and bone marrow which was formerly known as preleukemia. This announcement comes five years after Roberts survived breast cancer. Roberts released a statement following the GMA broadcast and in part said, “As many of you know, 5 years ago I beat breast cancer. Beginning this fall, the off-network programs House, Numb3rs and White Collar are being added to MyNetwork TV’s schedule. MyNetwork TV has been on the air since 2006 and is a broadcast service of News Corp. and FOX. Since 2009, MyNetwork TV has programmed off-network syndicated shows with a single program airing back-to-back episodes on a given night. The 2012-2013 MyNetwork TV schedule includes:
Mondays: Law & Order: SVU at 8p and 9p
Tuesdays: House at 8p and 9p
Wednesdays: Numb3rs at 8p and 9p
Thursdays: White Collar at 8p and 9p
Fridays: Monk at 8p & 9p
Joy Behar, co-host of ABC’s The View will host a new one-hour series, The Joy Behar Show (wt) on Current TV beginning this September. The Joy Behar Show will air nightly Monday through Thursday at 6p and will repeat the same evening in primetime. The series will feature topical news and issues along with Behar’s sense of humor and perspective as she discusses the latest headlines, pop culture events and more with a rotating group of journalists, analysts and political satirists. More details on the show’s ensemble cast, official title and premiere date will be revealed later this summer. In addition, Behar will guest anchor a week on Current TV while Governor Eliot Spitzer, host of Viewpoint will be on a scheduled vacation. Joy Behar: One Week Only *Until the Fall will air Monday through Friday, June 18-22 at 8p.
Premium channel SHOWTIME cleared two more original series adding them to its schedule for 2013. The one-hour dramas Ray Donovan starring Liev Schreiber and Masters of Sex starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan each received orders for 12 episodes. Production will take place in Los Angeles and both are slated to premiere next year. Ray Donovan is a SHOWTIME production while Masters of Sex is produced by Sony Pictures Television.
New competition reality series, Super Saver Showdown debuts on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network on July 20 at 9p. DIY expert Kristan Cunningham (Design on a Dime) hosts the series that features two bargain hunters as they compete to see which one has the best coupon clipping, super saving, DIY skills to help their families throw fun parties on a budget. Super Saver Showdown is produced by Glassman Media.
The season five finale of Mad Men on AMC airing Sunday night marked the highest-rated finale in the series history with 2.7 million viewers; 1.4 million with A25-54; and a 2.0 HH rating. The fifth season of Mad Men was also the most-watched season to date with an average of 2.6 million viewers, an increase of +15% over the fourth season’s average.
Also on Sunday, HBO opened a fifth season of True Blood at 9p which attracted 5.2 million viewers which was a decline of -4% over the season four premiere. The season opener of True Blood did post +3% better than the season four finale episode. Combined with the 11p encore, True Blood tallied a total of 6.3 million total viewers for the night. At 10p, HBO aired the first season finale of Veep which totaled 1.1 million viewers and the 12a replay drew in an additional 288,000 viewers.
Sunday’s premiere of Untamed Americas on National Geographic Channel (NGC) at 9p averaged a 0.5 rating with A25-54 and a 0.2 A25-54 rating on Nat Geo WILD. The four-hour hi-def miniseries that aired as a simulcast on NGC, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo Mundo had more than 1.2 million total viewers watching the premiere on NGC and Nat Geo WILD (note: Nat Geo Mundo is not rated).
Veteran comedy character actor, Frank Cady, best known as the general store owner on the classic sitcom Green Acres died at home in Wilsonville, OR. Mr. Cady was 96. Mr. Cady played the character Sam Drucker in Green Acres from 1965 to 1971 and he played the same character in two other classic sitcoms, Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies. He also appeared in the TV show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in the recurring role as Doc Williams. Mr. Cady and his wife, Shirley moved to Oregon in the 1990s. Mrs. Cady died in 2008.
Netflix, Inc. and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution forged a multi-year exclusive US subscription video licensing deal involving the complete previous seasons of ABC Family’s shows Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game. The third season of Pretty Little Liars is currently airing on ABC Family with season one available instantly now via Netflix and season two available on Netflix starting July 3. Season one of The Lying Game will be available on Netflix when season two debuts on ABC Family early next year. These two series join three other ABC Family series currently available on Netflix: The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Make It or Break It and Melissa & Joey.
Jewish television network, Shalom TV has launched its new full time channel on Blue Ridge Communications covering NE Pennsylvania as well as Hotwire Communication’s IPTV serving multiple dwelling properties in Manhattan, Northern New Jersey and the greater Miami area.
Premiere Networks and Glenn Beck’s multi-media production company, Mercury Radio Arts have renewed and extended their deal involving the syndicated radio show The Glenn Beck Program. Currently, The Glenn Beck Program airs on more than 400 radio stations nationwide and in 2012 the show will celebrate its 10th anniversary in national syndication. Furthermore, Mercury and Premiere has extended their long-running alliance in digital media including streaming video network GBTV, the news and information site TheBlaze.com, e-commerce marketplace Markdown.com and the fan portal GlennBeck.com. Premiere will continue to represent Mercury’s digital properties to advertisers and sponsors.

Warner Bros. Television Group has acquired Alloy Entertainment from an investor group headed by ZelnickMedia. The two companies have already partnered on five television series The CW’s Gossip Girls and The Vampire Diaries; ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game; as well as ABC’s upcoming series 666 Park Avenue. Leslie Morgenstein, who has served as President of Alloy Entertainment and its predecessor, 17th Street Productions, Inc. will continue to head the company within Warner Bros. Television Group. The transaction is subject to normal conditions and will likely be final during third quarter.
Drama series Being Human on Syfy has commenced production on season three in Montreal. The upcoming season will have 13 one-hour episodes starring Sam Witwer, Meaghan Rath and Sam Huntington with Anna Fricke serving as EP/Show-runner with Muse Entertainment. Being Human is produced by Muse Entertainment in association with Zodiak USA and is based on the series, Being Human created by Toby Whithouse and produced by Touchpaper Television, part of Zodiak Media. Worldwide rights to the series are held by Zodiak Rights.
Canadian-based production/distribution studio Breakthrough Entertainment is working with the heirs of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery to develop and produce a new 13-episode series for television based on the book series, Anne of Green Gables. The announcement about the all-new TV series was made jointly at the Banff World Media Festival by Breakthrough Entertainment principals Ira Levy and Peter Williamson, EP Joan Lambur and Kate Macdonald Butler, granddaughter of author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Production on the series begins in 2013 in the Canadian Maritimes and is described as a contemporary retelling of the beloved book series while at the same time capturing the author’s original vision for her characters and stories. The TV series will be produced by Breakthrough Entertainment in partnership with the L.M. Montgomery heirs. Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908 and has sold more than 50 million copies since worldwide. The book series consists of eight novels.
Shakespeare in Love star Joseph Fiennes in is negotiations to appear in the second season of FX’s American Horror Story as a regular. Fiennes would play the head of the institution for the criminally insane where star Jessica Lange works and would also have an amorous relationship with Lange’s character.
Alexandra Krosney who played the eldest daughter of Tim Allen’s character on ABC’s comedy Last Man Standing, will not be returning for the second season, per TVLine. The actress was let go for creative reasons and the role will be recast. In the next season, Last Man Standing is moving to Fridays at 8p and paired with new comedy Malibu Country starring Reba McEntrie.
Casting Call: Nationally-syndicated morning show LIVE! with Kelly is conducting a nationwide search for one viewer to be a co-host for a day with Kelly Ripa in the show’s LIVE’s Coast-To-Coast Co-Host Search. The search began yesterday and viewers can submit video entries, online or by mail, of up to 60-seconds in length showing why they should have a chance to co-host with Kelly. Participants are encouraged to be creative and show their best hosting techniques. The deadline to enter is June 29. The top five finalists will be announced July 11 and the co-host finalists will travel to New York during the week of July 16 to compete for a chance to become Kelly’s guest co-host on July 24. LIVE! with Kelly is distributed in national syndication by Disney-ABC Domestic Television and is produced by WABC-TV in New York. Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision led the A18-49 viewers Friday with a 1.5/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Univision won at 8p with Camino al Mundial at 1.3/5 and ABC’s Shark Tank rerun followed at 1.0/4. At 9p, Univision’s ratings for Camino al Mundial spiked to a 1.7/6 and ABC remained in second place with Primetime: What Would You Do? at 1.0/4. Univision polished off the final win of its streak during 10p with La Que No Podia Amar at 1.5/5 and ABC’s 20/20 was a tenth of a rating point behind at 1.4/5.

Toronto-based full-service entertainment production company and custom distributor, Peacock Alley Entertainment has just launched. Peacock Alley Entertainment is helmed by content executives Carrie Mudd and Neil Court serving as President and Chairman respectively.
Independent producer and distributor Entertainment Studios, Inc. added Mark DeVitre as EVP/General Counsel. Mark will have responsibility over business and legal affairs involving all Entertainment Studios broadcast syndication operations, cable networks, content, online efforts, financing, talent and programming license deals. Mark joins from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution where he served as SVP/Business Affairs and Operations.
Showtime Networks Inc. tapped Robin Gurney as SVP/Original Programming to head development and creative oversight of SHOWTIME original series. In her new role, Robin will report to Gary Levine, EVP/Original Programming. Prior to this appointment, Robin was with Imagine TV as SEVP/Development and Production.
Jen Neal was appointed EVP/Marketing with E! where she oversees and guides all marketing efforts for the brand including advertising, media strategies, creative, brand alliances, promotion and integrated marketing across all platforms. Jen joined E! as a consultant in February of this year and will now report to E! President Suzanne Kolb.
Rosemary Mercedes was elevated to VP/Corporate Communications at Univision Communications Inc. Rosemary heads the company’s NY-based communications team involved in strategy defining activities, providing communications counsel to senior executives and developing and implementing programs that help spur coverage for UCI.
