FOX‘s American Idol has named its new executive producer. Swedish television executive Per Blankens will take over the series’ upcoming 13th season. Blankens previously served as executive producer on Idol, the top-rated Swedish version of the singing competition franchise. He was also Managing Director of Friday TV, part of the Shine Group, and Head of Programmes for the Scandinavian production company Meter Television, where he oversaw the Swedish versions of MasterChef and The Biggest Loser.
It’s official. Sony Pictures Television has confirmed that Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna are heading back to the NBC comedy Community. Series creator and showrunner Harmon and former co-executive producer McKenna are returning as executive producers for Season 5.
During the opening session of the Cable Show in Washington DC today, network executives dug right into the subject of SVOD. AMC Networks president/CEO Josh Sapan emphasized the importance of second screen content and webisodes, during, and “most importantly between seasons. Off-season creates a great opportunity for growth,” noted Sapan. Meanwhile, Showtime chair/CEO Matt Blank added that he “isn’t terribly concerned with how many people are watching the premiere of one of our shows” at the actual broadcast time. That’s because when it comes to programs such as Homeland and Nurse Jackie, upward of 70% of premiere viewing occurs outside that television slot. “For us, it’s all about content disruptors,” he said.
It’s time for a wedding. Fans of The Real Housewives of Orange County who watched Tamra Barney find true love with Eddie Judge will have a front row seat at their California coast nuptials. Bravo Media is walking down the aisle with Barney and Judge in the three-part series Tamra’s OC Wedding, premiering Monday, September 2 at 8p. The limited-run series is produced by Evolution Media for Bravo.
CNBC Prime’s The Profit will join the network’s primetime reality line-up on Tuesday nights beginning July 23 at 9p. In each episode, America’s turnaround king Marcus Lemonis goes on the hunt for struggling businesses desperate for cash and ripe for a deal, and he’s putting over $2 million of his own money on the line. Once inside the company, he’ll do almost anything to save it and make himself a profit; even if it means firing the president, promoting the secretary, or doing the work himself.
Things are going to get hot! Kelsey’s Essentials premieres Wednesday, July 3 at 8p on the Cooking Channel with a visit to the first annual Hot Sauce Expo, where hot sauce is added to all savory and sweet foods. Then, Kelsey visits JoJo Collins, who turns up the heat on her homemade Sriracha, before getting started on her own hot sauce menu: Fresno pepper hot sauce, spicy kale Caesar salad and spicy roasted chicken.
Fuse is expanding its programming line-up with the launch of three original series. Insane Clown Posse Theater, produced by Fuse and set to premiere Wednesday, July 24, features Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope‘s twisted take on what’s new in music and popular culture. G-Thing, produced by Fuse and Paulina Williams and slated to debut Wednesday, July 24, looks into the lives of G-Fella, an Italian-American rapper, and his family as they try to launch the first “family style” run record label. Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce [wt], produced by World of Wonder and set to premiere Wednesday, September 18, explores the underground world of the New Orleans hip hop scene known as Bounce.
A new report from the IDC forecasts global shipments of “smart connected devices” (PCs, tablets, smartphones) to surpass 1.7 billion units by 2014, which means the screen fragmentation that everyone in our industry is talking about is going to continue. It will be one of the central topics discussed during Cynopsis Digital’s BIG Monetization Summit, which is now exactly a week away. If you haven’t registered yet, do it. See you there!

Syfy’s extreme game show Total Blackout will end its summer season with a special celebrity episode on Tuesday, July 9 at 9:30p. In “Celebrity Blackout,” international music star Aubrey O’Day, television host Bob Guiney, and actors Erin Way and Neil Grayston will go head-to-head in the dark for the opportunity to win up to $15,000 for their individual charities: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (Guiney), Responsibility (O’Day), Lungevity (Way), and Doctors without Borders (Grayston).
TV One will premiere R&B Divas LA via Video on Demand on Sunday, July 7, a full three days in advance of the series’ network launch. It marks the first time TV One will debut and promote an original series on VOD before it airs on the linear network on Wednesday, July 10 at 10p. A follow-up to TV One’s popular R&B Divas Atlanta, the Los Angeles series centers on West Coast divas Kelly Price, Chante Moore, Dawn Robinson, Lil’ Mo, Claudette Ortiz and Michel’le.
