Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Universal Sports CEO David Sternberg is exiting the channel to take on Manchester United, where he will serve as head of media. Universal Sports confirmed his exit, with Scott Brown recently appointed president ahead of Sternberg’s departure. At Manchester United, Sternberg will oversee the club’s in-house television channel, MUTV, as well as its website, mobile operations and social networking platforms.
The NBA Finals are two for two on ABC, winning the night but down year-to-year. Game 2 of the series drew a 10.2 overnight Nielsen score, off 14% from game two a year ago. Despite the dip, the game still ranks as the fourth-highest Game 2 rating since 2004. On the local front, the telecast scored a 29.7 local market rating in Miami and a 32.7 in San Antonio. The Finals continue with Game 3 on Tuesday, June 11 at 9p on ABC.
With more ratings data in, the deciding Game 4 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals handed NBCSN with 2.9 million viewers, making the contest the channel’s most watched NHL Conference Final game ever, and the most watched Conference Final game on cable since 2002. With 2.303 million average viewers, the Conference Finals round of the 2013 NHL Playoffs was up 90% over last year and ranks as NBCSN’s best Conference Finals ever and best on cable since 1996.
ONE World Sports is overhauling its look, announcing a relaunch for the network that will include a new on-air, corporate and digital branding and graphics makeover. The channel will go HD on Aug. 1, when the new on-air look as well as a global sports ticker will make their debut. In addition, ONE World Sports will relaunch its website and introduce a new app for mobile streaming of its content. Meanwhile, new programming additions will include telecasts of seven homes games of the New York Cosmos. The new graphics and network logo were produced by the Eyeball design agency.
NHL Network revealed content plans for the 2013 Stanley Cup Final between Blackhawks and Bruins, with the channel launching its Stanley Cup Final coverage live tomorrow at 1p with three hours of exclusive programming from the League’s annual Media Day. On game days, NHL Network will offer three hours of live coverage leading up to the game beginning with Cisco NHL Live from 5-6p, followed by NHL Tonight: 2013 Stanley Cup Final Pre-Game Show from 6-8p. Once the game is completed, NHL Tonight: 2013 Stanley Cup Final Post-Game Show hits the channel. NHL Tonight will be anchored by Kathryn Tappen, Kevin Weekes andBarry Melrose
Deportes Telemundo’s Rumbo al Mundial Soccer World Cup Qualifier between Panama and Mexico last Friday delivered an average of 1,517,000 adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The World Cup qualifier, narrated by acclaimed sportscaster Andres Cantor alongside soccer expert Sammy Sadovnick, averaged 2,563,000 total viewers and reached a cumulative audience of more than 5 million viewers.
BTN will carry a special draft edition of its series The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2013 on June 17, at 8p. The special will run after BTN’s Annual Award Show and profile Michigan’s Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr., Ohio State’s DeShaun Thomas, and Illinois’s Brandon Paul as they prepare for the 2013 NBA Draft.
Boxeo Telemundo is back on TV starting Friday, June 21, opening the second season with five fights, including the return of featherweight Orlando “El Fenomeno” Cruz. Theseason kicks off in Mexico City with a matchup between prospect “Mighty” Matthew Villanueva and Julian “Chicano” Rivera for the vacant WBO Latino Super Featherweight Title.
Former NBA head coach Doug Collins will co-host Mike & Mike tomorrow as part of ESPN’s comprehensive coverage of the NBA Finals. Collins, who most recently coached the Philadelphia 76ers, will join Golic and Greenberg for an NBA-centric programming block from 6-10a.
The Breeders’ Cup will stay at Santa Anita for the third year in a row in 2014, according to the AP. The annual event, which consists of 14 races including the $5 million Classic, will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 next year.

General Motors is bringing its Chevrolet brand to US Soccer, according to local reports, inking a three-year sponsorship deal with the United States Soccer Federation. The move follows last year’s deal with Manchester United that runs for seven years.
Golf Channel, NBC and Comcast are teaming up to host a two-day U.S. Open experience, on June 14 and 15, designed to capture all the flavor of the U.S. Open. On Friday (4-8p), fans will be able to meet Golf Channel personalities while watching all the U.S. Open action on the hundreds of screens located throughout the Xfinity Live! Other activities include a swing at Merion’s famed 16thhole on a golf simulator as well as interactive photo kiosks and more. Saturday’s event (10-2p) will allow kids to practice putting skills, eat free hot dogs and ice cream and meet the Minions from Despicable Me 2.
NBA teams could soon see new avenues for sponsors, according to an SBJ report, opening potential opportunities on the court and atop the backboards. League executives reportedly signed off for on-court advertising in front of team benches as well as camera-visible areas on top of the backboards.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs saw over 40 million minutes live streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra, according to Adobe Site Catalyst. Through the first three rounds of the playoffs, which includes 76 streamed games, there have been 40,590,591 minutes of live streaming, up 289% compared to last season when only 12 games were streamed, and up 1,198% vs. 2011. Other stats: 2.59 million minutes – Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final, which aired on Wednesday, June 5, required verification, and was won, 2-1, by the Boston Bruins over the Pittsburgh Penguins in double overtime; and 2.58 million minutes – Series-clinching Game 5 of the Western Conference Final, in which the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3, in double overtime on Saturday, June 8.
ESPN announced results of Project Blueprint, a five-screen measurement initiative that ESPN is undertaking along with Arbitron and comScore, revealing that the company reached nearly three in four American men with its TV and digital properties in February, as well as close to 60% of all adults. The study was designed to measure changing consumption of video, audio and display content across radio, television, PCs, smartphones and tablets. Other stats showed that tablet users were often ESPN’s most rabid consumers, spending an average of 19-plus hours per month with content across multiple platforms, a spike that is three times above average. Over the span of a week, 33% of ESPN’s users and 38% of male users used ESPN Digital Media either in combination with TV or exclusively.
