Late last week, India’s oldest and largest news network, New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) filed a lawsuit in a New York court against Nielsen. NDTV claims Nielsen has violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act by manipulating viewership data in favor of channels that are willing to offer bribes to its officials. NDTV further attests that manipulation of viewership data has been happening for eight years and when evidence was presented to Nielsen earlier this year, top executives at Nielsen said they would make changes which, according to NDTV have not happened. As a result, NDTV is seeking billions of dollars in damages from Nielsen and demanding that Nielsen be told to leave India.
