OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Channel announced it is producing five original two-hour documentaries featuring the talents of Julia Roberts, Forest Whitaker, Goldie Hawn, Gabriel Byrne and Mariel Hemingway. Each film will be part of OWN’s monthly documentary film club.

  • Extraordinary Moms – Presented and executive produced by Julia Roberts’ banner Red Om Films, this film explores the power of mothers, givers of love and protection to their children. Produced by Creative Visions Productions and Red Om Films; Kathy Eldon, Lisa Gillan and Philip Rose also executive produce.
  • One Last Shot – Narrated and executive produced by Forest Whitaker, this documentary takes viewers inside Louisiana’s maximum security prison at Angola, where the average sentence is 90 years and 85 percent of the incarcerated will never live in the outside world. The documentary chronicles a hospice program where tough criminals care for their dying fellow inmates. Produced by Lightworks Pictures in association with KPI with Nick Stuart and Molly Fowler also executive producing.
  • Searching for Happiness – Executive produced, hosted and narrated by Goldie Hawn, this documentary explores mankind’s quest for happiness. The film examines the elusive mystery that as a society progresses forward, people become less and less happy. Mark Ford and Kevin Lopez of Creature Films will also executive produce.
  • Tent City – Executive produced by Gabriel Byrne and Leora Rosenberg, this documentary examines homelessness in Nashville. In Tent City, viewers will meet a community of almost 100 homeless people who live under a downtown bridge. This group is self-sustained and self-governed and for the first time the city’s Homeless Commission has opened one seat on its council to a resident of Tent City and the documentary follows four candidates as they vie for the election which means a more positive move for the camp. Produced by Stick Figure Productions.
  • Seven Suicides – An original documentary following Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway as she discovers the legacy of suicide and depression in her own family.

OWN additionally acquired three other documentary films  Life 2.0, Sons of Perdition and Family Affair through its partnership with ro*co films international.

Next month, Comedy Central introduces viewers to its new 30m multi-camera family sitcom, Big Lake. The plot centers on big city banker, Josh (Chris Gethard) who, after losing his job, moves back home to his parents’ couch in Big Lake, PA. Now at home, Josh reunites with his childhood buddy, Glenn Cordoba (Horatio Sanz) and Chris Henkel (Chris Parnell), his favorite high school teacher. The series, produced by Gary Sanchez Productions and distributed by Debmar-Mercury, premieres August 17 at 10p with two back-to-back episodes.

G4 is expanding its series American Ninja Warrior for its sophomore season to ten one-hour episodes. The final prize for the American contestant who completes all four stages of the challenging obstacle course in Japan with the fastest stage time is now $250,000. The show’s second season will also take viewers inside a live-in boot camp where 15 finalists train together and compete until it is whittled down to ten who travel to Japan for the big competition. Season two of American Ninja Warrior debuts this December and it is produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions.  Furthermore, production on the new season begins with open auditions on August 7 and 8 at Venice Beach, California. This week, viewers in Las Vegas are getting a glimpse inside the 9th Annual World Hip Hop Dance Championship through exclusive content via PumpTop TV. The content from Hip Hop International, the creators of MTV’s Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew, showcases more than 2,000 dancers comprising the world’s top street dancers from 30+ countries as they compete all week with the winners receiving the title of “World’s Best Street Dance Crew” and $20,000 in cash prizes.

Sunday’s season four opener of AMC’s Mad Men was the network’s highest-rated and most-watched original series episode in its history. The premiere episode tallied 2.9 million total viewers, a +5% bump over the season three debut, and also posted a 2.3 HH rating.

Preliminary viewership results for the premiere of miniseries The Pillars of the Earth on Friday at 10p came in at 423,000 total viewers on Starz and 267,000 on Encore or a combined total of 690,000 persons viewing the initial two hours. Going forward, The Pillars of the Earth will not air new episode premieres on Encore.

Our second Emmy® special edition – Primetime Emmy® Awards: Outstanding Drama Series, highlighting the nominees for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, comes out on Wednesday. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

G4 picked up the exclusive US television rights to four new original anime series from the Marvel Universe. The series include Iron Man, X-MEN, Wolverine and Blade and each will air as a stand-alone series consisting of twelve half-hour episodes. All four will premiere on G4 next year, produced by Madhouse for Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan. Sony Pictures Television is the distributor.

Discovery Network’s Latin American entertainment channel, Liv acquired the exclusive cable rights in the region to the new cop series Hawaii Five-O and Blue Bloods. The deal with CBS Studios International further encompasses the cable rights to the first few seasons of the series Dexter and the sitcom Frasier. Liv will begin airing Hawaii Five-O later this year while Blue Bloods and the other series will launch in 2011.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Chord Overstreet (iCarly) signed on to appear in FOX’s Glee in the role of Sam, a McKinley High jock who begins as Finn’s protege but then turns into his competitor. Overstreet begins his stint with the premiere episode of Glee this fall.

Susan Sarandon is joining the HBO Broadway-themed pilot, The Miraculous Year, per EW. Sarandon will play Patty Atwood, the director/choreographer of the play-within-the-show. Production on the pilot began yesterday in New York with John Logan and Kathryn Bigelow producing. The all-star cast also includes Hope Davis, Patti LuPone, Frank Langella and Eddie Redmayne among others.

Casting Call: CBS’ new reality competition series Got To Dance (wt) is kicking off its nationwide auditions giving aspiring dancers the chance to perform in front of Paula Abdul. Interested dancers can visit www.cbs.com/dance to find the application and full details. This search is open to all US residents and there is no age limit or minimum; dancers may perform any type or style of dance as an individual or as part of a group. Abdul serves as executive producer in addition to being the show’s creative partner and top expert. She will also be a coach, mentor and advocate for contestants in the performance and elimination phases. Got To Dance is based on a hit show in the UK and the format was created by Princess Productions and Shine TV; Reveille is producing and Shine International is handling the distribution.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis: ABC and UNIV went head-to-head Friday night with each pulling in a 1.5/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV was first at 8p with Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 1.5/6 and ABC’s Wife Swap was #2 at 1.2/5. The competition narrowed during 9p, though UNIV remained on top with Soy Tu Duena at 1.8/7 with ABC’s repeat of Primetime: What Would You Do? next at 1.6/6. Then at 10p, ABC prevailed with 20/20 at 1.8/7 over NBC’s Dateline in second place at 1.3/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Donovan Batiste advances to VP/Research and Media Planning for Hallmark Channels, owned and operated by Crown Media Holdings, Inc. In his new position, Donovan will continue to facilitate Nielsen data to program executives which aids them in the development and acquisition of family-friendly content. His expanded duties now include media plans pertaining to on-air promotional campaigns and strategies to increase ratings for the channels among other responsibilities. Donovan will continue to be based at the company’s Los Angeles office, reporting to Jess Aguirre, SVP/Research and Media Planning.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. named Jeffrey Grant as SVP/Research for the company’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media (AYAKM) group. Jeffrey will manage all facets of research on behalf of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and AYAKM digital extensions and consumer products. His scope includes organizing, analyzing and reporting on audience ratings. Based in Atlanta, Jeffrey will report to Jack Wakshlag, Chief Research Officer, TBS, Inc. Additionally, TBS, Inc. elevated Carrie Nicholson to VP/Research for Turner Sports and Entertainment Digital Ad Sales. Carrie will now head ad sales research pertaining to digital sports and entertainment properties as well as create research strategies on behalf of the digital businesses. Based in New York, Carrie reports to Stacey Schulman, SVP/Entertainment Ad Sales Research.

Effective August 16, Amy Walter begins at ABC News as Political Director where she will manage all political coverage on ABCNews.com and ABC’s The Note. Based in Washington, Amy will also be involved in the planning and editorial content of all political news and offer on-air analysis on ABC News programs including World News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, Nightline, This Week with Christiane Amanpour, ABC News Radio and ABC News Now. Previously, Amy served as editor-in-chief for National Journal’s The Hotline for the past three years.

Former Magical Elves Co-Executive Producer, Lisa Lucas joined REELZCHANNEL as Senior Supervising Producer/Original Programming.

Casey E. Dellapenna recently took on a new position as Market Manager with West Palm Beach, FL-based PMP Marketing Group. Prior to this appointment, Casey was with WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach and DIRECTV in New York City.
