~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

A pair of original series was approved by BBC America along with an initial roster of unscripted shows in development.  New series include:

  • Would You Rather with Graham Norton (wt)  Set in New York, this half-hour original comedy game show tests the intelligence of US comics.  The 13-episode series is from So Television and is executive produced by Graham Norton, Graham Stuart and Jim Biederman.  The series launches later this year as part of the network’s comedy franchise, The Ministry of Laughs. 
  • Hard Drive with Richard Hammond (wt)  Host of BBC America’s popular Top Gear series, Richard Hammond stars in this hour-long original series based on the BBC format, World’s Toughest Driving Tests.  The series has Hammond traveling the US and competing with local experts while driving some of America’s most unique and toughest vehicles.  The six-episode series is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions and executive producers include Rob Fox, Elli Hakami and Jane Tranter.

BBC America has five projects in development:

  • James May’s Man Lab U.S.  Another Top Gear presenter, James May stars in this project based on a British format of the same name.  May travels to the US and teams with an American sidekick to help his guy pals rediscover the skills that define what “being a man” is all about.  Produced by Plum Pictures; executive producers are Will Daws and Stuart Cabb. 
  • AUTO Biography (wt)  This series journeys down memory lane to track the lost history of an exceptional vintage car.  The series’ host traces a vehicle’s family tree and meets previous owners while the car is being restored to its former beauty. At the end, the restored vehicle will be reunited with one of the unsuspecting previous owners.  Produced by Reveille; Heather Schuster is executive producer and Matt O’Brien serves as co-executive producer.
  • Battlemodo  Field-based hosted hour-long show featuring Gawker Media and its tech site Gizmodo.com where a battle happens between two cutting-edge products to reveal which one is best.  Produced by True Entertainment in association with Gawker Media; executive producers from True Entertainment are Glenda Hersh and Steven Weinstock along with Gawker Media’s Gaby Darbyshire.
  • No Kitchen Required  Single episode format takes four chefs and places them in remote locations where they are challenged to create a meal for the local community.  Produced by Notional, the series boasts New York chef Michael Psilakis as a producer as well as one of the on-air chefs. Other on-screen talent includes chefs Madison Cowan, Kayne Raymond and Dominque Crenn.  Notional’s executive producers are Chachi Senior, Dave Noll and Cleve Keller. 
  • Shock Therapy  BBC America ordered a one-hour special/back door pilot based on the BBC UK format, Fat & Fatter.  The show’s goal is to help addicted young people by pairing them with an extreme version of themselves in order to shock them into changing their lives for the better.  BBC Worldwide Productions is producing; Izzie Pick Ashcroft and Jane Tranter are executive producers.

Next Monday, MTV debuts Extreme Cribs at 430p, another series entry under the MTV Cribs franchise.  This newest edition of Extreme Cribs showcases some of the most extraordinary and quirky homes across the world.  From tree top abodes to homes built inside caves, Extreme Cribs offers viewers an inside look at how some people live in extreme settings. 

The sophomore season opener of HISTORY’s Top Gear last Sunday posted 2.0 million total viewers as well as 1.2 million among A18-49 and 1.1 million with A25-54.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

A companion spin-off series of Animal Planet’s Whale Wars began filming on July 15.  The series is tentatively titled The Faroe Islands Project and production will continue as it follows the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s campaign to halt the annual kill, referred to as The Grind involving an estimated 1,000 long-finned pilot whales in the Danish Protectorate of the Faroe Islands.  The number of episodes and the premiere date are yet to be announced.  The Faroe Islands Project is produced for Animal Planet by The Lizard Trading Company.

TV Guide Network has a new original series in development titled Hollywood Moms’ Club hosted by Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser) and Ali Landry (Eve).  The show’s premise is based on the real-life mom’s club founded by Sweeney and Landry where they gather with other female celebrity friends for themed monthly dinner parties serving potluck foods in each other’s homes, intimate conversation and Hollywood gossip.  Guest celebrity moms will appear in each episode and Denise Richards (Blue Mountain State) is tapped to guest star in the pilot episode.  The pilot of Hollywood Moms’ Club will air this November.  Ellen Rakieten Entertainment and RelativityREAL are producing; Landry and Sweeney also will be executive producers. 

James Franco returns to the ABC soap General Hospital this fall.  Franco will reprise his role as the mysterious artist beginning September 20. 

Television distributor, Litton Entertainment along with Everyday Health, Inc. a provider of online health solutions, said the hosts for the upcoming new series, Everyday Health will be former professional boxer Laila Ali, former professional soccer player Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca who is a champion of CBS’ Survivor: The Amazon.  Everyday Health is one of six original hi-def programs under the umbrella of Litton’s Weekend Adventure airing on Saturday mornings in most markets following Good Morning America.  Everyday Health will air on more than 95% of the ABC affiliates and it debuts September 3.  Mark Koops serves as executive producer.

Casting Call: Univision Network is launching national auditions for its new reality competition show Protagonistas (Novela Stars) premiering October 12.  Produced by Univision Studios and Imagina US, the show invites young men and women from across the US to compete to become Univision’s next on-air Protagonista or novela star.  The competition gives young actors the chance to make their onscreen network debut.  Auditions began last Friday and continue through September 23 through online virtual castings via Univision.com and through local, in-person auditions in six US cities and in Puerto Rico as well as through Protacapsula stops where interested participants can impress the producers to earn a first in line spot for the auditions.  The Protacapsula stops will be in Los Angeles this Thursday; in Phoenix this Saturday and Sunday; and in Miami on August 12.  The cities hosting the auditions are:  New York on August 19; Chicago on August 26; Houston on September 2; San Juan, Puerto Rico on September 9; Los Angeles on September 16; and Miami on September 23.  Online virtual casting via Univision.com is available for candidates to submit their video auditions through September 9 at 12 midnight; use keyword: Protagonistas.  For more information and to find the registration form, rules and conditions, please visit www.Univision.com , keyword: Protagonistas.  Participants must be 18 to 28 years old and Spanish-speaking legal residents of the US or Puerto Rico.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision ranked #1 Friday at 1.9/7 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, Univision’s Teresa wooed the most viewers to its side with a 1.5/6 followed by CBS’ Flashpoint at 1.2/5.  Univision was first again at 9p with Pequenos Gigantes at 1.8/7 and the first of two 20/20 episodes on ABC came next at 1.1/4.  Univision polished off a clean sweep during 10p with the second hour of Pequenos Gigantes at 2.1/7 and NBC’s Dateline was after that at 1.4/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Paraview TV, a new FiOS Channel hired Diane Ferenczi as SVP/Production and Programming and Rex W. Recka as SVP/Business Operations.  Diane joined from A&E Network and Rex previously worked for Discovery Communications.

Richard Stainer named Managing Director of Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) New York.  Richard begins his position September 1 and he will manage the Google/BBH relationship both worldwide in addition to supervising daily agency operations.  Richard will report to Greg Andersen, CEO BBH NY.  Previously, Richard was with BBH London where he served as Managing Partner.

Guhan Selvaretnam appointed as SVP/Product, Content and Operations, Discovery Digital Media by Discovery Communications.  Guhan is charged with developing and implementing programming and product strategies for Discovery’s Digital Media unit.  Guhan will head the digital content and product teams across Discovery’s US digital business in addition to working closely with the company’s advertising sales group.  Most recently, Guhan worked for Turner Broadcasting, Inc. in the capacity as VP/New Products Group Lead. 

Effective immediately, TidalTV added three new sales roles to its Midwest and West Coast offices with all reporting to Brian Danzis, VP/Advertising Sales:

  • Todd Ralph becomes Sales Director for TidalTV’s Detroit office joining from AudienceScience. 
  • Chris Robertiello hired as AE based in the company’s Los Angeles office where he will work in tandem with Datar Sahi.
  • Mary Gray joins as Sales Director/Northwest Region based in TidalTV’s San Francisco office where she will head ad sales in the San Francisco Bay area and the Pacific Northwest.

Kristen Kirst takes on the newly created role as SVP/Client Services and Strategy at marketing firm Media Ventures Group.  As she joins Media Ventures Group, Kristen relocated to New York from Seattle.  Previously she served as Director/Development for Medical Teams International. 

A&E Ole Networks related several promotions:  Cesar Sabroso upped to SVP/Marketing; Victor Hernandez to SVP/Finance; Miguel Brailovsky elevated to SVP/Programming and Production for HISTORY and BIO; and Cesar Coletti advances to VP/Marketing for HISTORY.

Geoffrey Greenblatt promoted to the new role as Director/Gaming for Mindshare North America, effective immediately.  Geoffrey will report to Scott Sorokin, Global Digital Leader, Mindshare.  Geoffrey was most recently the Associate Director/Gaming Strategy for Mindshare Interaction.

Crossborders tagged Adam Kahn as Creative Director to spearhead its CB Labs unit, starting right away.  CB Labs is the agency’s incubator for developing new mobile games and apps and other new products. 

NBCUniversal named Megan Canavan to the newly minted role as CFO of The Style Network.  Megan’s scope of duties includes oversight for the network’s financial affairs as well as the creation of Style’s strategic and long-range planning.  She will additionally be involved in key growth efforts on target with the network’s business goals.  Megan will jointly report to Salaam Coleman, President, The Style Network and Salil Mehta, COO/CFO, NBCUniversal’s Entertainment and Digital Networks and Integrated Media.

New York-based John Griffin is leaving Spike TV and his role as SVP/Programming.  John has been with Spike TV since 2005, beginning as VP/Programming.  In his present position, he managed all scheduling and media planning for the network in addition to acquisitions.  Keep us posted John!

Andy Cohn upped to President/Group Publisher with The FADER Inc.  Andy has been with The FADER since 2003 beginning as Associate Publisher.

Q. McElroy joins Cox Media Group (CMG) Ohio as Digital Director where she will head the growth and revenue of CMG Ohio’s entire array of digital products.  In the recent past, Q. has held several leadership positions at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
