Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
07/24/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 24, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
One of the great aspects of football is it takes many different types of people, joining together for one goal, to be successful. More than any other sport, this happens in football. You like your wide receivers tall and fast with great hands, your lineman huge and bulky with long arms and great strength. You want your defensive backs with great speed, agility and the ability to jump. You want your quarterback to make good split second decisions that will effect the outcome of every game and the running backs with explosive speed and strong legs.
But if you took any one type of player, and put them in every position, your team will surely fail.
This is true with companies also. You need different types of people, doing different things to be successful.
So when you read in advice columns and books that you must assimilate to the companies culture, that isn’t completely true. Tolerate might be a better word, but what you must do, is be yourself. You must embrace your strengths and work on your weaknesses, but be yourself. Present yourself in the best light possible, be positive and confident, be passionate and enthusiastic, but be yourself.
The only way this works is to you believe in yourself. No one us is perfect, but everyone, I mean everyone is great at one thing, probably more. Find that thing and be great. Not only will you get hired, more importantly, you’ll be happy.
Not many people like to play a sport they are terrible at. They love the sport they can play, but not the ones they look foolish trying to play. Same with work. If you are happy at work, you probably found one of the things you are great at, conversely, if you don’t like your job, it could be that it’s a struggle for you. You’re probably better suited doing something else.
Find it, and be happy.

In the charming small town of Bluebell, Alabama, there’s a lot of socializing to do. When it comes to being the Queen of Social, look no further than Lemon Breeland. Lemon is not only the belle of the ball, she’s usually the guardian of the guest list. For the new doctor in town, Zoe Hart, getting invited to one of Lemon’s parties may not be easy, but as someone who is trying to build a practice, networking is key!
Parties are a great way to meet people, yet many people avoid them for a myriad of reasons: I’m shy, I don’t know what to say to people, and I don’t know about any parties.
I want to address that last one, but first my quick networking shpiel: In-person networking is one of the most important things you can do for your career because communication is 55% physiology. People also like to meet people face-to-face. You can meet a lot more people in a shorter amount of time at a networking event.
Shpiel over. Now that you know you must network let’s address the “I don’t know about any parties” AKA I don’t hear about networking events.
Let me ask you a question. Do you think you are more likely to have better results in your career if you are actively “going for it” or if you wait around to “hear about things”?
If you let yourself off the hook for networking because you “don’t know of any networking events” it is a pretty good indicator that you are passive in many other if not all areas of your career pursuit. You can’t afford to be passive! There is too much competition! Are you up for it? Because if you’re not, and you continue to be passive, you’re on a long slow road which just might lead to nowhere.
Get off that path and start pursuing your career using this motto: If I don’t know something, there is a way for me to find out!
Here are some ways to actively find networking opportunities:
Ask people. Sounds obvious right? Someone you know has to know about parties and networking opportunities (and if they don’t, see 2 & 3). Many of my clients want to reach out to their contacts but don’t have a reason other than to ask for work, which they know I discourage in most situations. This is the perfect reason to re-connect. Ask your contacts if they are members of any networking organizations or if they are aware of any open invitation parties happening this season.
Google/Social Media. Google “entertainment industry networking events (insert your city here)” or ask on your social networking sites. You may be surprised to learn one of your FB Friends has a blog on industry events such as Industry Happenings.
Be philanthropic. Volunteer to help others in need. Another great reason to contact your peeps.. to ask if they are involved with any philanthropic organizations for which you can volunteer. Then not only are you giving back, you’re doing it with other industry people.
Throw a party. If all else fails, throw your own party. Choose a place and invite people. It doesn’t have to cost you a cent or you can go all out. It’s up to you. But you are guaranteed to be at a party if you throw your own.
No more excuses! If you are not going for it, someone else will and you’ve been missing out for long enough!
And Action!
Find 4 opportunities to network in THIS MONTH and put it in your calendar.
Make a list of networking and philanthropic organizations and get on their email list so you always know what’s happening.
If Zoe hadn’t put herself out there, the people of Bluebell wouldn’t have gotten to know her and trust her, and her practice would have gone bust. Who are you missing out on meeting because you’re not at the party?

Does it help to send in more than one resume for a particular job at a company?
Here’s what helps, to have a referral to that company when submitting your resume. With social media sites like LinkedIn, it’s easier than ever to find people who work at your target companies.
Start creating relationships with people who work there so that when a job shows up that you’re applying for you can ask to use the person’s name as an introduction AKA referral when applying.
When someone at the company is reading through the same old cover letters (basically form letters) yours will stand out when you have the name of a company employee referring you. Or if it’s a last minute opportunity and you haven’t formed any relationships at the company, reach out to all of your contacts to ask if anyone knows anyone at the company, in order to make an introduction.
Note: a referral is not a recommendation. The person at the company is not recommending you for the job because they don’t know you well enough for you to ask for that (unless you’ve brought the relationship to that point).
All they are doing is allowing you to use their name as an “in” so that your cover letter/resume stands out.
If I set up a personal website, what other information should it contain that a resume and cover letter would not?
A personal website is for branding yourself and creating relationships with your visitors. It should have an introduction page, a download page where potential employers can download resumes or stream reels, and a must have these days is a blog.
The subject matter would reflect what you do, how you do it, and with whom, in more detail than a letter or resume. You would also include a personal angle to the blog that reflects your characteristics that would be attractive to potential employers.
They want to know you have life experience that makes you interesting and good to work with. Keep in mind that while some entries may tie in your personal life, they are specifically chosen to reflect your personal brand.
