FOX had its turn yesterday morning at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles revealing several news bits:
- Making it official, Mariah Carey is joining American Idol as a new judge. American Idol will become part of the judges’ panel when the competition series is back for a 12th season in January 2013.
- Two of FOX’s new fall comedies, Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project will debut via Facebook and other online sites for two weeks prior to their primetime premieres. Both sitcoms will be available starting August 27 at 5p through September 9 at 5p on Facebook and other websites including Yahoo!, Hulu, AOL, MSN, Fox.com and Xfinity among others as well as participating cable, satellite and telco distribution partners on both VOD and online platforms. The comedies will be part of FOX’s new Laugh Your FOX Off! Tuesday comedy block launching September 25: Ben and Kate at 830p and The Mindy Project at 930p.
- FOX ordered a fourth season of its culinary competition series MasterChef produced by Shine America and Gordon Ramsay’s One Potato Two Potato and based on the format created by Franc Roddam and Shine. Ramsay serves as judge and EP on the show. The current season’s two-hour finale will air September 4 at 8p.
In its upcoming new series, Discovery Channel travels to Tanana, Alaska and meets the Yukon Men, debuting August 24 at 10p. Yukon Men profiles a group of men who struggle in this part of the Alaskan wilderness to help their families survive. Yukon Men is produced for Discovery Channel by Paper Route Productions, Inc.
Cable, VOD and web destination FEARnet introduces a new two-hour weekend programming block called Funhouse beginning August 18. The morning block will contain half-hour animated programs including The Real Ghostbusters and Tales from the Cryptkeeper in addition to the live-action dramas Eerie, Indiana and Dark Oracle. Funhouse will air on Saturdays from 10a to 12p and then repeat on Sundays at 10a on the linear TV channel. Dark Oracle has never before been available on US stations. FEARnet is now available in more than 7 million US homes.
Syfy debuts a second season of Paranormal Witness on August 8 at 10p with 12 all-new episodes, twice as many as the first season. The series offers up realistic cinematic reenactments of real-life paranormal experiences of ordinary people. During its first season, Paranormal Witness averaged 1.7 million total viewers and 990,000 A18-49 viewers. Raw TV produces the series.
The eighth season finale of Food Network Star on Food Network Sunday revealed Brooklyn’s Justin Warner as the new winner. Warner will receive his own Food Network series debuting this fall to be produced by Alton Brown who also mentored Warner.
As of yesterday, the lifestyle cable and broadband video network Plum TV launched a second season of hi-def series Yoga with a View. The show features yoga instructor Hilaria Baldwin (married to Alec Baldwin) in different locations around the country and is aimed at both beginners and experts. All six episodes of Yoga with a View season two will debut via the free, ad-supported Hulu and the Hulu Plus subscription service. The half-hour episodes also repeat on Plum TV cable network as part of a three-hour morning yoga block airing from 6a to 9a each day.
A fourth season of The Real Story premieres this Sunday on Smithsonian Channel at 9p. The series explore the real historic events behind well-known Hollywood movies. The season opens with The Real Story: Saving Private Ryan and reveals if the Oscar-winning film was true to historic WWII facts and also introduces viewers to the Nilands whose four brothers from Tonawanda, NY inspired the fictional Ryan family. Subsequent episodes of The Real Story examine the films True Grit, Apollo 13, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Braveheart and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

When the fourth season of Glee debuts on FOX September 13 at 9p, the show welcomes two new cast members. Dean Geyer joins as Brody Weston, a handsome upperclassman who shows a keen interest in Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) after she arrives at NYADA. Then back at McKinley, Jacob Artist joins as Puck’s (Mark Salling) rebellious younger half-brother, Jake Puckerman who tries out for the glee club.
FOX additionally is adding David Walton (NBC’s Bent) to the second season of New Girl where he will play Zooey Deschanel’s new love interest on the show. This is a recurring role for Walton and he first appears in New Girl’s season premiere on September 25.
Former Heroes alum Jack Coleman is joining the fifth season of ABC’s Castle as a new antagonist for Detective Beckett (Stana Katic). Coleman will play a US senator who becomes in conflict with Beckett.
CNBC is launching its first reality slate consisting of seven unscripted projects in development: Fakes and Forgeries (wt) produced by Endemol USA follows Curtis Dowling and his team of art investigators who work with clients who may be victims of a counterfeiter’s schemes; Franchised (wt) from Eyeworks USA gives five contestants who have high qualifications but are low on cash a chance to win a nationally-recognized franchise; At Your Service (wt) produced by Zodiak USA follows a high-end international concierge service that caters to wealthy clientele; Outstanding (wt) produced by RelativityReal follows four ambitious teenagers who are skilled in sports, the arts and academics along with their equally ambitious parents; Venture Men (wt) from Sharp Entertainment gives inventors and dreamers a chance to pitch their business ideas to gain instant funding to bring their products to market all within a 72-hour period; American Steel (wt) from Ellman Entertainment goes inside the competitive world of car flippers led by Joe Petralia and Jay Weinberg as they find, fix and flip classic and muscle cars; and Flipping Wars: Vegas (wt) produced by MorningStar Entertainment travels to Las Vegas where the housing crisis was hit the hardest and follows four teams of people who bid on foreclosed homes.
Production on the series Defiance begins production in Toronto tomorrow and is slated to premiere on Syfy in April 2013. Defiance represents the partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds and is the first-ever convergence of television and Massive Multiplayer Online gaming. The game will debut simultaneously when the series premieres next April. The cast is headed by Grant Bowler and Julie Benz and also includes Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray; Graham Greene, Mia Kirshner and Fionnula Flanagan.
Casting Call: FOX’s American Idol for its 12th season, is expanding its audition opportunities for contestants. The show will launch the American Idol Small Town Audition Bus Tour stopping in ten towns across the nation hosting auditions in Idaho Falls, ID; Billings, MT; Casper, WY; Rock Rapids, IA; Iowa City, IA; Bowling Green, KY; Clarksdale, MS; Joplin, MO; Dodge City, KS; and Grand Junction, CO. This Wednesday, arts and entertainment channel Canal 22 Internacional opens the seventh season of de Raiz Luna that honors the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The new season, hosted by writer Mardonio Carballo, opens at 10p with encore airings on Sundays at 630p.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision was planted firmly in first place Friday by delivering a 1.5/5 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Univision opened the night a winner at 8p with Por Ella Soy Eva at 1.2/5 while ABC’s Shark Tank repeat and CBS’ 48 Hours special report Tragedy in Aurora tied for #2 at 1.0/4 each. Univision stayed in the top spot during 9p with Abismo de Pasion at 1.5/5 and ABC’s 20/20 was next at 1.2/4. Then at 10p, Univision finished off its winning streak with La Que No Podia Amar at 1.7/6 and ABC’s additional 20/20 and NBC’s Dateline shared second place at 1.3/4 apiece.

On Monday, News Corporation revealed a restructuring of its senior leadership team and has promoted Peter Rice up from Chairman/Entertainment for Fox Networks Group (FNG) to Chairman/CEO of Fox Networks Group. Peter will helm all programming and operations for the group which includes Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox Sports Media Group, FX, Fox International Channels and the National Geographic Channels. David Hill was additionally appointed SEVP/News Corp. to head programming, digital efforts and other initiatives for the company’s operating units throughout Latin America, Asia, Australia, Europe and the US. David will be based in Los Angeles. Furthermore, several executives will now report to Peter Rice including David Haslingden, President/COO of FNG and Mike Hopkins, President/Distribution of FNG; Randy Freer and Eric Shanks, Co-Presidents/Fox Sports Media Group; and Kevin Reilly, President/Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company and John Landgraf, President/GM of FX will both continue to report to Peter.
Here Media Inc. promoted several in its advertising sales department: Joe Landry was upped to EVP/Publishing; Joe Valentino becomes SVP/Group Publisher for Integrated Sales; and Greg Brossia was bumped to VP/Publisher for the OUT brand.
Effective immediately, SapientNitro added Patty Cohen as VP/Group Account Director in the company’s Chicago office. Patty will be in charge of developing the account management group and will be involved with strengthening client relations. Before this appointment, Patty was with Energy BBDO where she served as EVP/Client Service Director.
NESN, New England’s sports network tagged Joseph Maar to become VP/Programming and Production, Executive Producer. Joseph will head and manage the network’s production, programming and network operations teams. Most recently, Joseph was with FOX Sports North (FSN) led the redevelopment of the company’s original programming.
Stacey Offman was hired by Jigsaw Productions as VP/Development and Production to oversee the New York-based production company’s growing production business and to develop new documentary and feature projects. Jigsaw Productions also added Dave Snyder as VP/Development to develop and supervise new television series for Jigsaw. Both Stacey and Dave report to company Founder/President Alex Gibney.
Lauren Skowronski was promoted to VP/Media Relations at MSNBC up from Director/Media Relations. Lauren heads internal and external communications for MSNBC encompassing program publicity and the overall media strategy. She further is the network’s chief spokesperson. Lauren reports to Phil Griffin, MSNBC President.
Los Angeles-based Sean Canino advances to Manager/Creative Development at multimedia studio, Electus headed by Ben Silverman. In his new role, Sean will spearhead the development of scripted and unscripted projects in addition to identifying the acquisition of new projects. Sean will also support Jimmy Fox, Head/Creative Development at Electus and he serves as liaison between the Electus International team and the Head/Creative Development in finding international formats for domestic development among other duties.
