07.20.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 20, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Group Interviews

A company invites a small number of job candidates, all at the same time.  The process usually begins with a presentation about the company and then the interview begins, with everyone present and participating.  Some companies will even engage the participants in problem solving exercises with their peers.

Group interviews may be the most nerve racking type of interview in existence.  Some employers see group interviews as more informative than one-ones.  Hiring managers can see how people will react and interact with others in tense situations, allowing for a more comprehensive assessment, while saving money and time by completing six to eight interviews in a few hours.

Though they may sound unfair, a group interview is a very dynamic process that allows the company to observe behavior usually seen only after a candidate is hired.

So here are some tips on how to handle a group interview:

Call several days prior to the interview, asking how many people you are going to meet with, and approximately how long the process will take.  These are legitimate questions and should give you a heads up as to whether your interview will be solo or with a group.

Introduce yourself to your fellow candidates.  It’s polite and it will immediately will set you apart from the others.

Volunteer, show that you can take the lead but don’t dominate or exclude others from expressing their opinions.

This is not Survivor or Big Brother, never lose your temper or raise your voice.

Get others involved by asking their opinions and give praise when appropriate.

Encourage others and never be aggressive or demoralizing.

If you are criticized, respectfully respond to that person’s input.

Act like a supervisor in the sense of keeping the ideas flowing and stopping any negative behavior within the group.

The group interview is a great way to see which candidate is best at handling tough situations.  Group interviews, by design, filter out those who don’t work well with others, so it’s important to understand that the content of what you say in the group may be secondary to the way it’s said.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Be Your own CEO
by Kristen Moeller, MS

What does it mean to be a CEO? Chief Executive Officer may be your title, may have been your title, or it is a title you hope for one day. Wherever you are in this continuum, it is important to consider that being the CEO of your own life is a place to come from, a place to stand, and a way of being. It is not dependent on title. The most powerful Executives know this. Consider Tony Hsieh who created a corporate culture of happiness and grew Zappos into a billion dollar company. In his early years, he practiced a CEO mindset even when he was running a small pizza business. Or reflect on Jeffrey Hayzlett who resurrected Eastman Kodak utilizing his cowboy mentality and cutting edge marketing techniques. For these bold men, being leaders meant much more than their titles. Being a leader is who they are. Therefore, this way of being is available to those who want it badly enough and are willing to work for it. And, yes, it takes something. It takes vision, commitment, courage and a willingness to weather the storms.

As the CEO of your own life, this is who YOU are. Your old job may have ended but your skills remain intact. In fact after going through a somewhat disruptive transition yourself, you are more equipped and more skilled than ever before. A CEO knows that failure can become the foundation for future success. Most highly successful people have failed countless times (and many of them have failed in large ways–bankruptcy, losing their homes etc). They live by the words of Sir Winston Churchill, “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”

A CEO knows they are in charge. They may have their doubts and concerns, but they realize the buck stops with them. They have the ultimate say about where their life and their company are going.

A CEO knows who they are. When meeting a new person, most people share what they do, not who they are. If you subscribe to this way of thinking, when the job ends, you end. Who you are for yourself is set adrift. A CEO lives from what they are committed to–and a commitment can never be taken away. They know that being a leader has nothing to do with the job they have. The job is merely an expression their commitment.
A CEO also realizes that looking for a new job or career can be an exciting opportunity to discover a fresh demonstration of their commitment.

If your commitment seems foggy, ask yourself: What made you choose your specific career path in the first place? What do you want to provide for people? What impact do you want to make on the world? What is your unique contribution? What kind of future do you want to create?

As the CEO of your own life, what is possible now?

Kristen Moeller, author of the bestselling, self-help book, “Waiting for Jack,” ( www.waitingforjack.com ) takes readers through the process of no longer waiting for something to happen and teaches them how to experience their own power, strength, courage, commitment and vision as they go through this transition.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Kristen Moeller, MS

Are there any rituals or techniques you use to stay calm during an interview?  I am looking for both prior to the interview and perhaps something during that is less obvious than deep breaths?
Yes!  Be prepared! Besides doing all the appropriate research about the company and dressing for the occasion, about five days before the interview, sit down for 30 minutes minimum with no distractions and write at least one paragraph on what you want the outcome to be.  E.g: “I will be engaging and dynamic, they will offer me the job and a generous signing bonus.  I feel tremendously satisfied and excited for my future.”  Fill in specifics that you want.  Now take a few minutes to visualize being in the interview.  You may not know exactly how things will look or who will be there so use your imagination. See yourself sitting comfortably in a chair, imagine the office, fill in the details – really get yourself there in your mind: Marvel at how calm, present and alert you are. Now hear your talents and skills being recognized and the job being offered to you.  If your mind drifts, bring it back. Take a mental snapshot of the image – really experience it.  Now, take a few deep breaths and open your eyes. Whenever you find yourself worrying, return to this image–even if only for a second.  Then, make sure you are getting plenty of rest and eating well prior.  On the day of the interview, consciously recall the image and sensations.  I agree, deep breathing could be “obvious”. Instead, feel your feet, placing them firmly on the floor.  If you start getting nervous, bring your attention back to your feet and again feel the floor underneath.

I have a friend who suggests I go on interviews for jobs I don’t want, just to get used to the process.  She says it has helped her tremendously, and she was so poised during these interviews she actually ended up getting an offer for these jobs she didn’t want.  It sounds a little off to me, what do you think?

Great in theory…and I agree, it sounds “off”.  By “off” I mean, it has no integrity.  She is wasting other people’s precious time and resources.  Only go to an interview if you believe you would take the job or genuinely want to find out more.  You can practice in other ways. Look at your network–who do you know who has interviewed people before?  Ask them to practice with you – literally sit down across a desk and have them ask you questions.  Think of some of the most challenging and difficult questions–and have them ask those. Do this a few times at least.
