FX’s series Damages is moving to DIRECTV in a new deal the satellite provider forged with Sony Pictures Television. The deal calls for 20 new episodes to be produced early next year airing exclusively on DIRECTV in consecutive seasons in 2011 and 2012. Series stars Glenn Close and Rose Byrne along with other major cast members will continue in their respective roles. DIRECTV additionally gained the rights to air the complete and previously-aired seasons one through three of Damages. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with FX Productions.
ZenithOptimedia revised its 2010 global advertising forecast, saying it now predicts a +3.5% worldwide ad growth to $447.5 billion up from +2.2% it had previously calculated in April. For North America, Zenith reverses its forecast to a +1.3% growth for this year to $158.5 billion encompassing a +1.1% increase in the US and a +5.4% bump in Canada. Earlier this year, Zenith had predicted a -1.5% ad decline for North America. In 2011, Zenith estimates US ad growth could increase to +2.7% and a +3.0% by 2012.
Late in the day yesterday, the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore reportedly was close to finalizing a big pay raise per episode deal, ensuring that the complete cast would return to the 24-episode season “2.5” and there would be no production delay, reports THR’s Live Feed. The new season was set to begin production this week and the network released a statement saying, “Season 2 premieres July 29 and production is on schedule.”

The Ski Channel made a long-term distribution deal with Comcast delivering the network’s original programming, Warren Miller movies, Greg Stump films, destination travel, instructional videos and events to Comcast On Demand subscribers. With the culmination of this deal, The Ski Channel is now available to more than 43 million households amongst all its television distributors. Additionally, The Ski Channel has produced several original ski films that will be part of a large US film tour kicking off in mid-October. The network, through its exclusive long-term partnerships with the National Ski Council Federation and the National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association, ski clubs and ski shops throughout the country, will host local premieres of the films prior to being distributed on the network.
Starz’ prequel series, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena captures the story of Gannicus, the first gladiator to become Champion of Capua. Australian actor Dustin Clare landed the role as Gannicus; Jaime Murray and Marisa Ramirez were also tapped for top roles in the new series as Gaia and Melitta respectively. As the prequel to the series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Lucy Lawless (Lucretia), John Hannah (Batiatus), Peter Mensah (Oenomaus) and Manu Bennett (Crixus) all reprise their roles from the original series. Andy Whitfield as Spartacus will make a brief appearance and will be part of the show in season two which begins production later this year. Production on Spartacus: Gods of the Arena begins next month and is slated to premiere on Starz in early 2011.
Actress Kirsten Vangsness will take on a dual role playing her character Penelope Garcia in CBS’ midseason series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior as a regular as well as continuing to play the same character on CBS’ Criminal Minds. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior stars Forest Whitaker, Janeane Garofolo, Matt Ryan, Michael Kelly and Beau Garret. Both series are produced by ABC Television Studios in association with CBS Television Studios.
Michael Ealy (FlashForward) is joining the cast of CBS’ The Good Wife playing Derrick Bond, the head of the Washington, D.C. firm that is merging with Will and Diane’s financially-beleaguered company. Ealy will be in an estimated 10 episodes during the sophomore season of The Good Wife.
Gregory Itzin, who played a bad guy on FOX’s 24, will next appear on HBO’s Big Love in a recurring role as Senator Richard Dwyer, the Republican Majority Leader of the Utah State Senate. Itzin joins the series’ fifth season.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: UNIV topped the pack Friday night at 1.4/5 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe was #1 at 8p with a 1.5/7 and CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery repeat was #2 at 1.1/5. UNIV stayed out in front during 9p with Soy Tu Duena at 1.8/7 with ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? encore next at 1.5/6. ABC then traded places at 10p as 20/20 ranked first at 1.5/5 with NBC’s news magazine Dateline delivering a second place standing at 1.1/4.

Paul Newman advances to SVP/International Technical Operations with NBCU. Paul continues to be involved in growth for Universal Networks International and other technical operations for NBCU worldwide. Based in London, Paul reports to Ian Trombley, EVP/Technical Operations, NBCU.
Independent advertising agency, Deleon Group hired Gloria Johnson as Manager/Business Development. In her new role, Gloria is responsible for acquiring new business for the agency and is based in Los Angeles.
International production and distribution firm, Cineflix added Christina Wayne as President of the company’s newly-established scripted entertainment business, Cineflix Studios. Located in the company’s New York office, Christina will oversee Cineflix’s scripted programming projects in the US, the UK and Canada concentrating on long-running and returning TV series. Prior to this appointment, Christina was SVP/Scripted Series and Mini Series at AMC.
Michele Kessler is joining NBC Universal’s Integrated Sales Marketing (ISM) team as the next CMO in Residence as part of the program’s quarterly rotation. Michele, the former VP/Global Chocolate Strategy at Mars, Inc. begins her new position this month.
TV One appointed Kimberly Hulsey as SVP/Distribution and Strategy where she will lead distributor relationships with the goal to increase TV One’s distribution for its standard-def and hi-def networks. Kimberly will further develop strategy for broadband, on-demand and mobile platforms as well as enhancing marketing initiatives to meet distribution goals. Before taking on this position, Kimberly was SVP/Legal Affairs and Human Resources Strategy at TV One since January 2007.
Rich Goldman was selected as Executive Producer for Judge Karen’s Court, the new court series from Litton Entertainment launching September 20. Rich previously was EP of the first Judge Karen series. Dave Morgan, President/CEO of Litton also serves as EP for the new series which is taped in Los Angeles.
Entertainment Studios named Cat Santarosa as EVP/Executive Producer for the company’s 24-hour HD television network, MYDESTINATION.TV. Cat will manage all facets of the hi-def network which focuses on exotic destinations and luxury resorts. Cat additionally will continue as EVP/Executive Producer of RECIPE.TV. Entertainment Studios operates a total of six 24-hour HD television networks.
Courtney Burke takes on the new position as Managing Director/Senior Partner at Mindshare in the Client Leadership area for American Express. Before that, Courtney was SVP/Director of National TV at Deutsch.
