Spending increased in almost every major media category with the largest rise in Internet (+46.4%) followed by Spanish Language TV (+14.3%) and Outdoor (+12.8%). The two-hour drama block Crime Watch comprised of procedural crime series Cold Squad and Stone Undercover, is now cleared in all of the Top 50 markets thanks to the addition of 12 new stations. Developed and distributed by Program Partners, Crime Watch is scheduled to launch September 16 on more than 200 stations. To date it has been cleared in 96 out of the Top 100 markets which equates to 92% U.S. coverage.
The N has greenlit a third season of the teen drama Instant Star. Production has started in Toronto and the first of 13 new episodes will premiere in February.
Great American Country (GAC) has entered into a new multi-year pact with Different Drummer Productions, LLC to renew its carriage of the entertainment news program Country Music Across America, hosted by Storme Warren. The agreement includes renewing this bi-weekly 30m news show as well as obtaining a new series of weekly news updates and specials from the production company.
WE tv will premiere the new original series Platinum Weddings on July 23 at 8p. During each 30-minute episode, one lucky couple will receive a lavish wedding of their dreams in an exotic location and with the help of a celebrity event planner and flower designer. The 12-episode series is produced by Film Garden and joins Bridezillas on WE tv Sunday nights as part of WE’s Wild Wedding Night block.
CBS will follow in the footsteps of its competitors and offer original, digital extensions exclusively online for its new drama series, Jericho. Produced by CBS Paramount Network Television and owned by the CBS Corp., Jericho stars Gerald McRaney and Skeet Ulrich as an estranged father and son living in a small town that has survived a nuclear strike.
havoc Television, the cross platform indie music and lifestyle channel, has new national VOD television distribution deals with Cox Communications and various other new affiliates scheduled to launch this summer. havoc is now available in more than 17 million television households and since April of this year, it has more than doubled its hours of monthly programming content.
Oxygen has increased its subscriber base by more than 12 million new homes in the first half of this year based on recent launches in Comcast and Cox markets. The female-targeted network now reaches a total of 68 million homes.
Spike Lee has signed a one year development deal with NBC Universal Television Studio to create new dramas for the network. This is not Lee’s first go at the small screen – he recently directed the pilot for the CBS fall series Shark starring James Woods, as well as the 2005 mini series Miracle Boys. He even appeared in an episode of Ghostwriter called Into the Comics: Part 1 as Special Agent Pete.
Jeffrey Kramer, former president of David E. Kelley Prods, has signed a two year deal with CBS Paramount Network Television to develop both drama and comedy projects for both the networks and the various digital platforms via his recently established Juniper Place Prods.
Fox has ordered up a new comedy pilot called Frangela from Touchstone TV and Brillstein-Grey, and starring comedians Frances Callier and Angela Shelton, who also wrote the script with David Zuckerman. The show is based on Callier and Shelton’s standup act, and is listed as a female buddy comedy.
For some reality show stars, the genre is a cash cow. Rob and Amber of Survivor fame were the final two in that game, when Rob popped the question to Amber on live television in the final episode. In 2005 they were married on CBS. We saw them compete on Amazing Race. Now the couple has engaged in a reality show with Fox Reality network, wherein cameras will follow the newlyweds as they move to Las Vegas where Rob hopes to become a professional poker player (aha! a poker series in his future perhaps?). The show is on track to launch in January.
