Yesterday, NBC News President Steve Capus revealed NBC News is now the full owner and operator of Msnbc Digital Network which encompasses msnbc.com, TODAY.com, NightlyNews.com, BreakingNews.com, Newsvine.com, EveryBlock.com as well as the existing apps and digital extensions associated with these various properties. As of July 13, 2012, NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News purchased from Microsoft its 50% share of the joint venture that was formed in 1996. As a result, all of NBC News’ digital businesses, including Msnbc Digital Network properties, theGrio.com, NBCLatino.com, NBCPolitics.com, EducationNation.com, social media and all of the network’s digital efforts will merge to form a new division called NBC News Digital. Furthermore, the current msnbc.com site is now NBCNews.com which will offer access to national and international news as well as local and regional news in partnership with NBC’s Owned Television Stations. MSNBC TV has plans to launch a new digital site in 2013 featuring its talent and shows. Until next year, MSNBC TV’s digital content will continue to be available via its current platforms. NBC News Digital will be led by Vivian Schiller, SVP/Chief Digital Officer of NBC News. Charlie Tillinghast will continue to manage the Msnbc Digital Network properties, reporting to Schiller. In addition, the present NBC News Digital sales team will now report to Marianne Gambelli, President of NBC Network Ad Sales and will work closely with John Kelly, EVP, NBC News Ad Sales.
PBS’ long-running series Nature is back with a new season this fall beginning October 10 at 8p (check local listings). The new season offers 13 new hours of programming dedicated to nature’s wonders with the opening episode on October 10 highlighting the Siberian Tiger Quest with Chris Morgan followed by three other episodes airing this fall: Magic of the Snowy Owl on October 24; Animal Odd Couples on November 7; and Ducks: Wings Over Water on November 14. More episodes air in winter/spring 2013 including a three-part miniseries under the Nature banner titled Attenborough’s Life honoring Sir David Attenborough’s 60th anniversary on television. Nature is produced by THIRTEEN for PBS in association with WNET, the parent company of THIRTEEN AND WLIW21, New York’s public television stations and operator of NJTV.
Telemundo Media reports the premiere week of Pablo Escobar: El Patron del Mal (Pablo Escobar: The Drug Lord) that aired Monday-Friday at 10p (July 9-13), averaged close to 2.1 million total viewers and nearly 1.2 million A18-49 viewers. Pablo Escobar: El Patron del Mal ranks as the second-highest novela premiere week in Telemundo’s history among A18-49 behind 2011’s La Reina del Sur (Queen of the South).
This September, The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) rolls out a new half-hour original docu-series, Hawaii Air Rescue (wt). This six-episode docu-series follows the crew of Hawaii Life Flight, the elite air ambulatory service for the Hawaiian Islands who must face dramatic weather conditions while dealing with traumatic medical crisis. Hawaii Air Rescue premieres September 5 at 9p with encore repeats at 12 midnight. This series joins The Weather Channel’s other original series including Coast Guard Alaska, Iron Men, Lifeguard!, Ice Pilots, Hurricane Hunters and Coast Guard Florida (October 10) in addition to the Braving the Elements docu-series anthology including Turbine Cowboys, Pyros, Iceberg Hunters (September 18) and Reefmakers (October 9). Hawaii Air Rescue is produced by Zero Point Zero Productions, the production company behind Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and other series.
A new culinary show on Cooking Channel travels to US cities in search of global cuisine when Eden Eats premieres August 17 at 10p. World traveler and foodie, Eden Grinshpan stars in the eight-episode series where she visits a different city each week in search of original recipes of immigrants and locals and to learn stories of their cultures through food. Eden Eats is produced by Noise Productions Inc.
At the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday afternoon, FX highlighted footage from the fifth season of Sons of Anarchy and also disclosed the premiere date will be September 11 at 10p.
Sunday’s season five premiere of AMC’s Breaking Bad has become the most-watched episode in the history of the series. At 10p, the opening episode delivered 2.9 million total viewers as well as 1.8 million among A25-54. For the night, the premiere episode tallied 3.5 million total viewers adding together the 10p episode with the 1130p encore airing. AMC had previously announced Breaking Bad will have 16 final episodes to end the series. Breaking Bad will continue with all-new episodes on AMC Sundays at 10p. Breaking Bad is produced by High Bridge Productions, Inc. and Gran Via Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television for AMC.
Also on Sunday at 10p, USA Network bowed the new six-part miniseries Political Animals which drew 2.6 million total viewers as well as 834,000 with A25-54 and 675,000 among A18-49.
Two of Syfy’s series, Warehouse 13 and Alphas will comprise the network’s Powerful Mondays beginning July 23 at 9p. Starting this Friday, Lost Girl will move to a new time period of 10p. The fourth season of Warehouse 13, with 10 episodes, will open at 9p and is produced for Syfy by Universal Cable Productions. Alphas is back with a second season at 10p and is produced by Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television.
HISTORY will debut the third season of the US version of Top Gear on August 14 at 9p. Hosted by comedian Adam Ferrara, champion race car driver Tanner Foust and racing analyst Rutledge Wood, Top Gear is produced for HISTORY by BBC Worldwide Productions and is co-production between HISTORY and BBC Worldwide.
Readying for its 10th season based from Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, The Ellen DeGeneres Show returns in national syndication on September 10 (check syndicated/local listings). The show starring Ellen DeGeneres, is launching a new summer and fall branding campaign this week featuring celebrities and former Presidents relating why they love to be on the show. Stars in the promos include Jennifer Aniston, Justin Timberlake, Cameron Diaz, Justin Bieber and President Clinton. The daily talk show is produced by A Very Good Production and WAD Productions, Inc. in association with Telepictures and is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.
Later this month, ABC Family welcomes its fourth annual end-of-summer programming stunt called Campus Crush. Over ten days and beginning July 30, Campus Crush includes all-day runs of movies such as Miss Congeniality and The Prince and Me and all-new episodes of its original series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Bunheads, Beverly Hills Nannies, Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy, Pretty Little Liars as well as the season finale of Jane By Design on July 31 at 9p. ABC Family will additionally serve up the network premiere of the sitcom Reba starring Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman which joins the network’s lineup on weekdays from 4p-6p starting August 7. To launch Reba, ABC Family will air a seven-hour marathon of episodes on August 6 from 11a to 6p. International broadcasting veteran, Mike Lattin, 62, died last week at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney soon after he retired as CEO at GlobeCast Australia. Mr. Lattin was an experienced broadcaster in Australia though was also well known here in the US as he frequently did business with the major studios. Tributes to Mr. Lattin by his friends, referred to him as a “broadcasting legend” in Australia and a highly respected “old-school TV executive” who always “got the best out of everyone” and additionally was an “extremely funny guy.”

Making if official yesterday, the Senate Commerce Committee announced a hearing will take place on July 24 to look at the 1992 Cable Act, the policy that established the retransmission consent-must-carry rule. Committee chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) said the retransmission issue will be a key component as the future of video is considered. “We can’t look to the future of video without evaluating the Cable Act’s impact on the modern television marketplace and whether the legislation has achieved Congress’ goals,” he said in announcing the hearing. “In particular, I want to take a close look at how we make sure that consumers do not continue to get caught in the crossfire in programming disputes, facing dark screens and losing access to news, sports, and other entertainment programming.”
As the carriage dispute between Viacom and DirecTV continued through a sixth day, DirecTV gave its subscribers access to several channels that are typically available in high-level packages, reports Multichannel News. DirecTV added PBS Kids Sprout, Discovery Communications’ The Hub, TV One and Madison Square Garden’s Fuse for all its 19.9 million US subscribers. DirecTV is also offering Starz Entertainment’s eight Encore networks at no charge to subscribers through July 31 along with a freeview of MLB Extra Innings and MLB Network Strike Zone through July 19. At midnight on July 10, DirecTV subscribers lost their access to 17 Viacom networks and their hi-def counterparts. The two entities are currently in negotiations and according to DirecTV, the two parties made headway in discussions on Sunday.

A novel titled The Last Ship by William Brinkley was ordered to become an action/drama pilot by TNT with filmmaker Michael Bay (Transformers) on board as EP. The project lands at TNT from Platinum Dunes and its partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Hank Steinberg will serve as show-runner while other EPs besides Bay include Fuller, Form, Steinberg and Steven Kane. In the novel, a global catastrophe occurs that nearly wipes out the earth’s population which forces the crew of a naval destroyer to realize they are among the only survivors left.
ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy cast Gaius Charles (Friday Night Lights) in a recurring role for the ninth season though details on his character have not been revealed yet.
Former All My Children cast member Mark Consuelos (and also real-life husband to Kelly Ripa) is joining the second season of FX’s American Horror Story which commenced production this week. Consuelos will play a patient at the asylum for the criminally insane named Spivey. He joins previously announced cast members Jessica Lange, James Cromwell, Joseph Fiennes, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, Adam Levine, Chloe Sevigny and Lizzie Brochere.
Submissions Call: Advertising Women of New York (AWNY), as part of their 100th anniversary, has launched an Education Loan Relief Awards program. At AWNY’s 100th Anniversary Gala on October 4 at Gotham Hall, the organization will present a minimum of ten deserving AWNY members who are carrying student debt with a $10,000 award to be used to pay off their education debt. Applicants must be AWNY members, be involved in business for a length of time, prove they carry educational debt, provide two references from current or past employers and submit an essay on why they are deserving of this award (200 words or less) as well as a current resume. The application deadline is August 15, 2010 and can be found at awny.org.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision continued in its Friday #1 spot at 1.5/6 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Univision’s Un Refugio para el Amor topped with a 1.3/5 though ABC’s Shark Tank rerun was a tenth of a rating point behind at 1.2/5. Univision put a little more spread between itself and the competition during 9p as Abismo de Pasion posted a 1.5/5 and ABC’s first of two 20/20 episodes was next at 1.3/5. Univision drove further ahead through 10p with La Que No Podia Amar at 1.9/6 and NBC slid into second place with Dateline at 1.4/5.

Soon-to-launch new US Spanish language broadcast network, MundoFox bolstered its management ranks by hiring Adriana Ibanez as EVP/Programming. Based in Los Angeles, Adriana begins her new position August 1 and she will work closely with Emiliano Saccone, President, to whom she will report, where she will oversee MundoFox’s entire programming strategy and content acquisitions. MundoFox will debut August 13 and will be available to more than 75% of US Hispanic households at launch.
Effective immediately, Michael DuPont joins TV Guide Network as EVP/Advertising Sales coming from NBC Universal Cable Entertainment where he worked for the last ten years most recently as VP/National Advertising Sales with NBCU Cable Entertainment’s Oxygen Media. In his new position, Michael will spearhead TV Guide Network’s national advertising group based in New York.
Two were promoted at the TEN Sponsor Shop, the full-service, in-house creative agency at Turner Entertainment Networks. Nicole Priem was elevated to SVP/Sponsorship Solutions while Matt Bunting becomes SVP/Creative. Nicole and Matt are based in Atlanta and report to Laura Dames, SVP/Business Operations for Turner Entertainment Networks including TBS, TNT, truTV and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
Here Media Inc. tapped Justin Garrett to join its sales force in the newly-created role as VP/Digital Sales and Publisher. Justin will oversee Here Media’s digital sales efforts which include a comprehensive focus on social media and emerging technologies. Based in San Francisco, Justin will report to Joe Landry, EVP.
Matthew Eby was named Senior Director/Digital Product Marketing with The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) where he will lead the development and implementation of brand strategy and marketing for TWCC’s web and mobile properties. Matthew will work in tandem with the company’s marketing, content development and product teams while reporting to Jennifer Anderson Gragg, VP/Brand Strategy and Marketing.
