Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Companies is joining with Relativity Media to form Relativity Sports, combining SFX Baseball, football agency Maximum Sports Management and Relativity Media’s basketball agency Rogue Sports. The new entity will rank among the largest sports agencies in the United States with more than 150 clients in MLB, the NBA and NFL, with over $1 billion in current contracts. Clients include Amar’e Stoudemire, Mariano Rivera, Justin Verlander, David Ortiz, Justin Morneau, Alfonso Soriano, Miguel Cabrera, Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Jennings, Ndamukong Suh, Devin Hester and Steven Jackson.

On the Air

The college football season’s broadcast schedule continues to come into focus with early SEC games slotted into the CBS and ESPN schedules. ESPN outlets will cover 33 conference games during the first three weeks of the season across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 and the SEC Network starting Thursday, Aug. 30 with South Carolina/Vanderbilt at 7p. As part of the schedule, on Saturday, Sept. 8, ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to televise the first conference games of new members Texas A&M and Missouri against Florida and Georgia respectively.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports announced that it will kick-off its 2012 SEC on CBS season pitting Alabama against Arkansas on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 3:30p. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson, will call the action.

FUEL TV’s fourth Fight Night, UFC on FUEL TV: Munoz vs. Weidman, handed the network with the channel’s third most-watched day in history and its second most-watched night of primetime with 211,000 total viewers, according to Nielsen, peaking in the 10:30p quarter hour with 291,000 viewers.

The Big East Conference and Syracuse University finally pinned down their official divorce date, announcing that the two organizations reached an agreement to make Syracuse’s departure from the Big East to the ACC effective July 1, 2013. In addition to other considerations, Syracuse will pay the Big East of $7.5 million in order to leave the conference early.

NBA China Games 2012 locked in two games between the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 11 in Beijing and Oct. 14 in Shanghai. This will mark the sixth edition of NBA China Games and the first time the reigning NBA Champions will compete in the event.

ESPN announced that the channel’s telecasts of the first and second rounds of The Open Championship on Thursday and Friday have been pushed up a half hour and will now start at 4:30p in order to allow viewers to see the complete rounds of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Woods tees off at 4:42a on Thursday while Mickelson starts his round at 4:31a on Friday.

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive told the AP that he has extended his contract with the conference for ”at least a couple more years.” His contract was set to expire on July 31.

International soccer journalist Gabriele Marcotti joined ESPN as a writer and analyst for the company’s soccer coverage worldwide on TV, and, as a writer for ESPNFC. Marcotti will appear regularly on Press Pass.

Golf Channel bolstered its editorial team, adding former Sports Illustrated journalist Damon Hack as well as ESPN host Ryan Burr. Hack will serve as a “Golf Channel Insider” for the network’s news programming, including Morning Drive and Golf Central and will contribute a senior writer for GolfChannel.com. He also will be seen occasionally on NBC Sports Network, reporting golf. Burrwill serve as a host for shows such as Golf Central and will report for Golf Central from tournaments around the globe.

Forbes released their annual list of most valuable sports teams, with Manchester United topping the list at an estimated $2.23 billion, and Real Madrid taking the second spot at $1.88 billion. The list turns to the US with the Yankees and Cowboys both at number three, valued at $1.85 billion. The rest of the list, in order, includes the Redskins, a tie between the Dodgers and Patriots, Barcelona, the Giants at #9 and Arsenal rounding out the top ten.

MX Sports Pro Racing and NBC Sport’s Alli Sports announced record-high viewership at the halfway-point of the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. After the first six races, viewership has grown 67% year-to-year and say an 80% spike in live stream starts with over 400,000 for the year.

Yao Ming and NBA China announced a broad and comprehensive partnership designed to broaden basketball participation, develop youth basketball, promote cultural exchange, and conduct social responsibility programs in China. Ming will work with the league to launch basketball and social development programs for Chinese youth through NBA Cares and the Yao Foundation for communities in need.

Digital Fields

The USA Today Sports Media Group and MLB Advanced Media are teaming up to launch Sports on Earth, a site dedicated to “great sports writing” from voices around the industry. The site marks the first content product to launch from their newly-formed joint venture. The site will launch in late August although there will be an introductory section of the site dedicated to the 2012 Olympic Games. Names on the site will include Joe Posnanski, who was named the 2012 Sportswriter of the Year. Steve Madden will serve as General Manager for the joint venture and Larry Burke will serve as Editor-in-Chief. Other voices are set to include: Tommy Tomlinson,  Gwen Knapp, Shaun Powell, and Mike Tanier.

Front Row Marketing Services, The Ligue de Football Professionnel and Goldrun are launching an augmented reality app in advance of the Trophee Des Champions match between Ligue 1 champion Montpellier and French Cup Champion Olympique Lyonnais. The app is designed to give fans around the world a chance to “hold” the TDC in their hands and marks the first time that an augmented reality app has been implemented for a global sporting event.

The Sun Belt Conference and XOS Digital, Inc. entered an exclusive agreement for XOS to offer technology enabled sponsor activation and digital network services to launch and manage the Sun Belt Digital Network. The Sun Belt Digital Network will offer the Sun Belt community with video-centric offerings that include an officially branded website, applications for mobile, tablet and Smart TV, an OnDemand Game Store, affiliate digital video players and live streaming of Sun Belt games and events.

ESPN revealed some of the social media results stemming from last week’s ESPYs. On Twitter, more than a quarter of a million votes were logged during the live show for #BestTeam, and #ESPYs and #BestTeam were top worldwide trends on the day of the show. On Facebook, the post of Eric LeGrand’s speech alone received nearly 50,000 likes and close to 2,000 shares.
