Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 16, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

5 Ways to Understand Your Communication Style

As a professional, how you present yourself to others is critical to your success; and although technical skills are important in doing your job well, it is how well you communicate and get along with others is the real test of your true potential.

Trust, transparency, authenticity and rapport are the four cornerstones of effective communication.  Knowing that some people just naturally click with one another – and others, not so much – we can struggle to find common ground which can lead to conflict and a negative work environment. 

What we don’t always remember, however, is that each of us approach the world differently and have different communication styles. In communication, we tend to speak different “languages.” Master communicators understand fully the four cornerstones of effective communication and they adapt their communication “language” to that of the other person.  It doesn’t mean they would give up their native tongue (who they truly are). It just means they are willing to adapt their approach in order to most effectively engage with others. Adapting our behavioral and communication styles is one of the most important ways to apply the four cornerstones of effective communication; while also being willing to respect others and put their communication style preference first.  Remember, people want to be treated the way THEY want to be treated; not the way you think they should be treated.

What are the communication and behavior styles?

No matter whose approach you study, you will find that your behavior and communication style falls into one of four categories:

The Socializer
The Commander
The Thinker
The Relator

The Socializer is open in their communication style and the focus is on people. They are enthusiastic and creative, they love to talk, love being the center of attention and they are not much for details and organization.

The Commander is closed in their communication style and the focus is on tasks.  They are highly verbal, directive, know how to inspire, yet like to be in control and can be pushy.

The Thinker is closed in their communication style and the focus is on tasks. They are detailed oriented, reserved, regimented and prefers to work alone rather than with a group.

The Relator is open in their communication style and the focus is on people.  They are friendly and accommodating, democratic and supportive. However, they will give in under pressure and have a tendency to value the approval of others.

Each one of us has a core style as well as a sub-style.  As you begin to learn and understand your communication and behavioral style, you will be able to recognize the different communication styles of others and adapt accordingly.  This is a great skill to have because you will be seen as someone who can get along with others, work within a team and be seen as someone who can solve challenging problems.

Phil Breman has been named Vice President of Current Programming at NBC. Breman, formerly executive director of original series development at Disney Channel, will be tasked with overseeing some of the network’s new comedy and drama series for the 2013-2014 season.

FremantleMedia North America has named Lee Rierson as Chief Operating Officer. Rierson, formerly COO of Shine America, will oversee production, business and legal affairs, communications and marketing, business development and strategic planning. He replaces Donna Redier Linsk, who left the post this month.

Tom Barrack has been named Chairman of Miramax. He replaces Richard Nanula. Barrack is chairman and chief executive officer of Colony Capital, which owns the studio.

Rob Sorcher and Mike Lazzo have been appointed Executive Vice President/Chief Content Officer for Cartoon Network and Executive Vice President/Creative Director, Adult Swim, respectively. Both executives will oversee the digital and gaming businesses for each of their areas and continue to spearhead the development and production of original and acquired content for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, and the supervision of Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street Studios (Adult Swim). Sorcher previously served as chief content officer for Cartoon Network. Lazzo was senior vice president, programming and production, for Adult Swim and Williams Street Studios.

Fusion, the new network for Hispanics from ABC and Univision, has appointed Anhelo Reyes as Vice President of Marketing. Anhelo, who last served as vice president for strategic property planning and marketing at Nickelodeon, will lead branding, marketing and promotion.

Lesley Norman has been added to Thirteen‘s arts and culture biography series’ production team. She will serve as Director of Planning and Strategy for the series American Masters. Norman will be responsible for developing media and creative partnerships as well as potential funding partners for the American Masters series and coordinating all grant proposals to foundations, government organizations and PBS. Norman most recently served as the senior producer for the PBS special 180 Days: A Year Inside An American High School.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation has announced the promotion of Karen L. Herman to Vice President of the Archive of American Television. Herman joined the Academy shortly after the Archive was founded in 1997 and previously served as its director. She also leads the Foundation’s “Living Television” initiative, which oversees a curriculum to teach college students nationwide how to conduct oral history interviews with television pioneers and legends in their own locales.

Def Jam Recordings is building up its A&R strength with the appointment of award-winning record producer and DJ Don Cannon to Vice President, A&R. Cannon will oversee current and new artist projects and will actively seek out and sign new talent to the label.

Charlie Vogt has been named CEO of Harris Broadcast. Vogt, who previously served as president and CEO of Genband, is a 25-year veteran of the technology and communications industry. He succeeds Harris Morris who left the company earlier this month.

A&E Networks UK has appointed Heather Jones as Vice President of Programming. Jones will be responsible for programming strategy across the company’s channels in the UK, Central Europe, Benelux, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Greece and Africa, and be charged with driving audience growth through original commissions and co-productions, A+E Networks’ US output and third-party acquisitions. She last served as Managing Director of North One Television.

YES Network has announced two promotions. Mike Webb has been upped to Vice President, Broadcast Operations. Webb, who previously served as Senior Director, Broadcast Operations, will oversee long-range planning, field and studio operations and engineering. Rob Brinkmann has been promoted to Director, Studio and Production Planning. Brinkmann, formerly Manager of Production Planning, will oversee all studio operations and transmission for YES and will provide field operations support.

CMT has announced two appointments. Julia Silverton has been named Vice President, Development, and Zena Van Ackeren has been hired for the newly created position of Vice President, Talent and Specialty Casting. Silverton will oversee the development of a broad range of the network’s programming, while Van Ackeren will develop the channel’s new internal casting division and work alongside external producers and casting directors.

ABC News veteran Mark Lima is moving to Fusion, the new network for Hispanics from ABC and Univision. Lima has been appointed the network’s Vice President of News. Lima was most recently part of the team at Nightline.

Mindshare, the global media agency network that is part of GroupM, has named Colin Kinsella as its new Chief Executive Officer for North America, effective July 15. Kinsella, formerly CEO North America for Digitas, a Publicis agency, will be responsible for the management and operation of all Mindshare activities in five U.S. cities and Canada.

Universal Cable Productions has promoted Mark Binke to Executive Vice President, Production. Binke previously served as Senior Vice President, Cable and Digital Productions at Universal Television/Cable and Digital Production. In his new role, he’ll continue to lead the production and operations of series that shoot in North America and overseas.

Digital network Blip has appointed Chris Mohney as Vice President of Programming. Mohney, formerly editor in chief of Tumblr, will oversee all editorial and programming direction for Blip.com and Blip content across the web, and all digital platforms across the globe. He starts July 15.

Bill Keith has been named Vice President, Creative Services at UP, America’s uplifting family entertainment network. An award-winning writer, producer and creative director, Keith has worked for The Weather Channel, Tribune Creative Services and Turner Broadcasting during his 30-year career. He last served as executive producer at Crawford Media Services in Atlanta.

Petra Luna has been named Senior Vice President of entertainment marketing company MerryMedia, Inc., effective immediately. Luna, a co-founder and of Q-This, a promotion, music publishing and production company, joined MerryMedia as a senior consultant in 2012.
