07.16.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
CW: Whose Line Is It Anyway? at 8p; Perfect Score at 9p
Lifetime: Catering Wars at 10p
Spike TV: Ink Master at 10p
Style: Giuliana & Bill at 8p
USA: Covert Affairs at 9p, Suits at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
NUVOtv: Curvy Girls at 10p

Cable news got a hefty bump from the announcement of George Zimmerman‘s not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin trial, with almost 11 million people tuning in Saturday night for the controversial call. Early Nielsen numbers show Fox News (3.68 million), CNN (3.41 million), HLN (2.21 million) and MSNBC (1.30 million) more than quadrupled the combined 2.4 million audience from the week prior.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The View is about to get blonder. ABC confirmed its worst-kept secret yesterday: Jenny McCarthy will join the morning gabfest on Monday, September 9. The bubbly bombshell and one-time Playboy Playmate of the Year had guest-hosted The View eight times; she’ll join vet panelists Whoopi Goldberg and Sherrie Shepherd. “She has connected with our audience and offers a fresh point of view,” said Barbara Walters of her new hire. Joy Behar leaves at the end of the summer; Elisabeth Hasselbeck departed last week to join Fox News

As Glee mourns the death of Cory Monteith, who passed away Saturday at age 31, the Fox show is also contending with how to craft the exit of one of its most popular stars. (In last season’s finale, Monteith’s character, Finn, was in college indulging in fraternity hijinks.) Monteith had survived a cast purge that included Dianna Agron, Mark Salling, Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr. and Amber Riley; production for season five of the show was scheduled to begin end of July/early August. Meanwhile, Hollywood grapples with how to honor the actor. Matthew Morrison paid personal tribute to the star on Sunday night, dedicating his performance at NYC’s 54 Below to Monteith, and Bravo is re-airing the actor’s appearance on Inside the Actors Studio on Thursday, July 18 at 6p.

Who knew PBS had a sense of humor? New York’s WNET is poking fun at reality shows with a campaign from agency CHI & Partners, aiming to make the case for quality television. Included are “ads” for Meet the Tanners, about a family of suntanners (“You sass me,” warns Mom, “and you go in the shade”), and Clam Kings, about two battling fisherman who “aren’t shucking around.” Ha!

Governor Chris Christie is taking a break from New Jersey politics to make a guest turn on The Michael J. Fox Show, which premieres on Thursday, September 26. Christie has appeared on late-night TV, including a Springsteen-spouting, comedically combative spot on SNL, but this will be his first scripted comedy appearance in prime time. (We’re betting he’ll work in a Boss reference.)

Honey Boo Boo meets Emeril? Food Network is launching a 6-episode series on Monday, August 5 about the founders of a popular barbecue joint in Mississippi called The Shed. “ShedHed” Brad Orrison used his dumpster-diving loot to help construct the restaurant with his sister, Brooke; their father, Daddy-O makes the sauces. Bring it on!

Lindsay Lohan‘s mom, Dina, is on board with the eight-part reality series her troubled daughter is doing for OWN about life after rehab (Lindsay gets out of Betty Ford at the end of July). “It’s fantastic,” Dina told E! News. “If anyone is going to mentor you, it’s going to be Oprah.” As opposed to your mother…

If you missed seeing Robert Duvall attacked by Indians in 1989’s Lonesome Dove or Angelina Jolie survive an angry goose charge in 1997’s True Women, Sonar Entertainment‘s new MINIS + MOVIES can fill the gap. The paid channel on YouTube, launching today, offers miniseries and made-for-TV movies. A monthly subscription is $1.99; new titles, both current and classic, will be added monthly.

Emmy-winning correspondent Sheila MacVicar has been tapped for Al Jazeera America‘s new prime time newsmagazine, America Tonight. The network expects to debut in late August. Now based in Washington, MacVicar has served as a London-based correspondent for ABC, CNN and CBS. Variety reports that veteran news producer (CNN, ABC and NBC) David Doss is also in talks with the show.

Syfy is shouting from the rooftops practically about its new thriller, Helix. The series, about a mysterious outbreak at an Artic outpost, doesn’t debut until January, but Comic-Con fans at the July 18-21 convention will get an early peek, in the form of a huge wrap around San Diego’s Marriott Marquis Marina Hotel, next to Comic-Con headquarters at the Convention Center.

Travel Channel is putting the pedal to the metal with two new series. Sturgis: 24/7 follows the outrageous events at the 73rd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally; in Celebrity Layover, stars share insights about secret hot spots. Think they’ll let us in?

Goooooool! Join us on Aug. 14 when we present Telemundo staple Andres Cantor with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cynopsis Sports Business Summit. Cantor, of course, is an internationally known star behind the microphone, calling countless soccer matches all over the world and his goal calls have become iconic for both Telemundo and sports culture in the United States. Telemundo Executive Vice President of Sports Jorge Hidalgo will present the honor. Tickets are on sale now at http://www.cynopsissportssummit.com.

They’re not your country cousins’ RVs. GAC is spending the summer touring stars’ motor homes including the McMansion-y model (chef’s kitchen! Master suite!) that was Brad Pitt‘s home away from while filming World War Z. Celebrity Motor Homes debuts Wednesday, July 17.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

True-bies, rejoice! HBO is vamping it up with an order for season seven of True Blood. Though the June 26 premiere numbers for season six, airing now, declined from season five, the show still boasted 4.5 million viewers.

VH1 is doing cartwheels over Hit the Floor, the new series about professional basketball dancers. The freshman drama has been averaging 1.2 in A18-49 viewers easily enough to nab it a second season.

Bizarre Foods America and The Dead Files earned third season orders from Travel Channel, which is also bringing back Toy Hunter and Trip Flip for season threes. Airport 24/7: Miami, will log six additional eps in its sophomore season.

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution has inked deals for crime drama Rizzoli & Isles for a broadcast weekend off-net window in 95% of the country, starting in fall 2015. The 170 markets include stations owned by Fox, CBS, Gannett and Scripps. The series is in its fourth season on TNT (Tuesdays at 9p).

The Arsenio Hall Show hired a slew of industry vets for the syndicated late-night talk show, launching on Monday, September 9. Joining the team are Claudia Cagan as Senior Talent Producer and Makiko Ushiyama as Producer; both are alums of the original Arsenio Hall Show (1989-1994). Renee Henson and Luke Sader have been named Talent Producers, while Christopher McDonald will serve as Music Producer. Holly Crosby and Stephanie Storey round out the crew as Coordinating Producers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Bounce TV not only got renewals from some of its largest affiliates, the African-American network has been launched in enough new markets to reach 88% of television homes. “It’s extremely rare in our business that carriage agreements are renewed and extended this early in a network’s life cycle,” said Jeffrey Wolf, Bounce TV executive VP of distribution, about the less-than-two-year-old net. “It is a resounding vote of confidence.” Panama City, Florida and Knoxville, Tennessee are its most recent launches.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Production is underway in Montreal for the fourth season of Muse Entertainment‘s supernatural (vampires and werewolves and ghosts, oh my!) series, Being Human. The show will air on Syfy Stateside, and on SPACE in Canada.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Canada will get a little more culture this fall, with the launch of Smithsonian Channel in Canada. Smithsonian Networks, a joint venture between Showtime Networks, Inc.
and The Smithsonian Institution, is partnering with Canada’s very own Blue Ant Media to produce “a robust selection of exclusive titles,” says Blue Ant EVP Programming, Vanessa Case.

BBC World News will be available free to the more than 8.5 million subscribers of Germany’s largest cable operator, Kabel Deutschland. That puts the channel in more than 35 million households across the country. “This extension of our relationship with KD is a significant step forward for the business,” said BBC World News distribution director Collin Lawrence.
