Cynopsis: Sports
07.16.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports started pulling back the curtains as it prepares for the launch of FS1, announcing details of its upcoming series Crowd Goes W!ld, which debuts on Monday, Aug. 19. While it was previously announced that Regis Philbin would serve as a host for the discussion and analysis program, other personalities set for the show will include Wall Street Journal sports columnist Jason Gay; professional tennis player turned comedian Michael Kosta; two-time Super Bowl Champion and four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Trevor Pryce; and Sky Sports host and news anchor Georgie Thompson, along with Guyism.com personality and YouTube personality Katie Nolan serving as social media correspondent. Michael Davies serves as executive producer. The series runs weekdays at 5p.

On the Air

ESPN and ESPN2 are gearing up for new weekday afternoon programing lineups starting Monday, Aug. 5 and continuing throughout the football season. In addition, during the football season, ESPN2’s Sunday schedule will also have a different look (beginning September 8). Changes in the lineups are set to include NFL Insiders, with Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter, on the flagship at 3p, as well as the introduction of daily soccer studio series ESPN FC on ESPN2 on weekdays at 5:30p and Sundays at midnight. On Sundays starting September 8, the revamped ESPN2 schedule will include Cowherd on Football (9-10a), a new hour-long program with host Colin Cowherd. In addition, the ESPN2 Sunday schedule will feature the weekly Outside the Line sat 8a, followed on ESPN2 by The Sports Reporters at 8:30a. Fantasy Football Now will hit the schedule at 11a.

Golf Channel is partnering with the NFL this fall for the network’s staple series Big Break, which will celebrate its 20th season with several NFL greats playing alongside aspiring professional golfers. Big Break NFL will debut Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 9p. Among the names set to take part will be Jerry Rice, Chris Doleman, Tim Brown, Marc Bulger, Al Del Greco and Mark Rypien. Each of the six NFL legends will join two Big Break competitors (one male and one female) to form three-person teams. Winners for the season will receive $50,000 to the winning NFL legend’s designated charity, as well as 2014 PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour tournament exemptions, cash and other prizes. NBC Sports’ Sunday Night Football sideline reporter and Emmy Award-winner Michele Tafoya joins Golf Channel’s Tom Abbott to co-host the show.

PBS’ American Masters will profile a sports figure for the first time, when it showcases Billie Jean King. The 90-minute documentary will debut on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 9p to commemorate the 40th anniversaries of the King vs. Riggs “Battle of the Sexes” Match as well as the founding of the WTA by King. Serena & Venus Williams, Hillary Clinton, Sir Elton John, Maria Sharapova, members of the Virginia Slims Circuit “Original 9” including Rosie Casals, Gloria Steinem, Chris Evert, Margaret Court, Bobby Riggs’ son Larry, family, friends, and many others were interviewed for the special.

The NBA inked a renewal of its broadcast deal with Spain’s Canal +, extending a relationship that has run since 1995. According to multiple reports, Canal + will air an average of one game live game every night during the regular season, with coverage of the playoffs across its Canal +, Canal + Deportes and Canal + HD channels. Meanwhile, the extension will also allow one free game per week on Canal +’s internet service Yomvi.

Expect some heavyweights to appear on ESPN’s College GameDay this season. ESPN Senior Coordinating Producer Lee Fitting told SI.com that representatives for both Barack Obama and Tiger Woods have reached out to see if their clients could appear on the show. Fitting also said that viewers could expect more opinion this year from panelists Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Lee Corso.

FOX Sports South announced that former NFL All-Pro and Atlanta Falcon Ovie Mughelli will join SEC Gridiron LIVE when it makes its fifth season debut on Wednesday, August 28, at 10p. Meanwhile, Tim Couch returns for his fourth season as an analyst, along with James Bates, and SEC football sideline reporter and social media host, Elizabeth Moreau.

Gooooooool! Join us on Aug. 14 when we present Telemundo staple Andres Cantor with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cynopsis Sports Business Summit. Sponsorship & Promotion

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association is teaming up with online fundraising platform RallyMe.com in a multi-year deal to serve as the Official Crowdfunding Platform for the USSA, U.S. Ski Team, U.S. Snowboarding, and U.S. Freeskiing. The program is designed to help athletes raise funds to offset travel and training costs over and above the $20 million the USSA invests each year in athletic programs. Through the agreement, USSA athletes who raise funds on RallyMe will be featured on a special team partner page, allowing funders to easily access elite team athletes. They will also have a customized widget integrated into personal bio pages on their respective national team website, so supporters can easily contribute.

ESPN launched its first spot for the company’s coverage of the final 17 races of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which begins July 28 at the Brickyard 400. The brand campaign debuted its first spot, dubbed Burnout that spotlights the NASCAR legacy each champion aims to build, with the tagline “43 Drivers. 12 Spots. 1 Champion.” The 30-second ad was produced in collaboration with creative agency Wieden + Kennedy New York.

Speaking of ESPN, the company is promoting its environmentally friendly initiatives for the 2013 ESPYs, which are designed to be carbon neutral for the fifth consecutive year. Among the green tactics will be: solar power used on red carpet, press center, golf course; multi-passenger vehicles instead of limos; bioplastics instead of petroleum based plastics for all disposable foodservice products and waste grease collected from venue caterer and concessionaire and that will be turned into biodiesel.

Head & Shoulders is taking its MLB #whiffs campaign to the next level, announcing that during the All-Star Game, if a pitcher strikes out the side during the 2nd inning, Head & Shoulders will make a $1 million donation to Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI). Meanwhile, for every “whiff” throughout the Majors during the rest of the 2013 Regular Season, Head & Shoulders will continue to make a $1 donation to the national RBI program.

Adidas announced that it was dropping its sponsorship of American sprinter Tyson Gay after he tested positive for doping. “We are shocked by these recent allegations, and even if we presume his innocence until proven otherwise, our contract with Tyson is currently suspended,” the company said in a statement.

Digital & Production

Outside Television launched a new digital portal (outsidetelevision.com) designed to enable the entire community from athletes and adventurists to top filmmakers, brands and everyday participants around the world  to interact directly with one another and share content across the entire group. The new portal will offer thousands of diverse adventure videos with an “easy-to-navigate” mosaic interface, including top surf, snow, sailing, climbing and other core adventure activities.

Roster Moves

Aaron LaBerge is heading back to ESPN to serve as Senior Vice President, Technology and Product Development. LaBerge previously worked for ESPN’s technology group from 1997-2007 and will now be charged with oversight and strategic leadership for technology and product development for digital media and mobile platforms, and on-air production software.
