2010 FIFA World Cup Ratings Final Game: Sunday’s final between Spain and the Netherlands was watched by a total of 24.3 million US viewers on ABC and Univision combined, making it the most-watched soccer match in US TV history, reports Nielsen. The two-and-a-half hour game kicking off at 230p exceeded the previous record of 19.4 million for the US versus Ghana match which aired on June 26. Looking at Univision alone, the World Cup final game broke all audience records on this network for a World Cup final by posting 8.8 million total viewers; 5.4 million A18-49; and 3.3 million A18-34.

Univision Communications Inc. announced today that the final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, Spain vs. The Netherlands broke all audience records for a World Cup Final in its history, delivering 8.8 million Total Viewers 2+ (8,821,358), 5.4 million Adults 18-49 (5,369,506), 3.3 million Adults 18-34 (3,259,553) and

Showtime announced premiere dates for two of its new series as the drama Shameless starring William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum opens January 9 at 10p and the comedy Episodes headlined by Matt LeBlanc begins January 10 at 1030p. Additionally, the fourth season premiere of Californication is set for January 10 at 10p. Shameless is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television; Episodes is a co-production of Showtime and the BBC.

ABC and Canwest both renewed the scripted drama series Rookie Blue for a sophomore season. Rookie Blue is now in development for this new season with production beginning later this summer in Toronto. Rookie Blue was developed by Thump Inc. and produced in partnership with E1 Entertainment, which also holds the worldwide distribution rights for the series.

During the month of August, Smithsonian Channel showcases a series of specials under the heading Inside the Music. The specials will emphasize music and the musicians that have inspired generations. A highlight of Inside the Music is the premiere of All You Need Is Klaus on August 22 at 8p, about the life of Klaus Voormann, a world-renowned bass guitarist who had associations with The Beatles.

Also in August, the Africa Channel debuts two new original series coinciding with the channel’s hi-def launch:

  • Africa Laughs – Stand-up comedy series produced in hi-def and hosted by Nigerian comedian Seyi Brown opens with a preview special on August 1 at 8p then moves to its regular time period of Wednesdays at 9p with an encore airing on Saturdays at 10p.
  • Between the Lines – Hi-def series features Africa’s literary greats hosted by Cameroonian American author Sarah Culberson. A preview special airs August 1 at 9p, then the series moves to its regular time slot of Thursdays at 9p with an encore airing on Saturdays at 6p.

A&E Network said 3.6 million total viewers tuned in to the premiere episode of its new original scripted drama series, The Glades on Sunday at 10p. This opening episode has become the most-watched original drama series telecast in A&E’s history. The Glades also attracted 1.4 million among A25-54 and 1.2 million with A18-49.

Oxygen Media renewed its dating series Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too for a second season. A spin-off of the network’s reality series Bad Girls Club, Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too is produced by Bunim-Murray Productions.

Last Friday’s fourth season premiere of Syfy’s Eureka at 9p delivered nearly 1.3 million A25-54; 1.1 million A18-49; and just a tad over 2.5 million total viewers. Following at 10p, the series debut of Haven drew in almost 1.1 million A25-54; 857,000 A18-49; and 2.3 million total viewers. Haven retained 93% of Eureka’s lead-in audience.

Next Monday, TV One launches a second season of its part biography, part confessional series Life After with two back-to-back 30m episodes at 9p. The eight-episode Life After relates real, behind-the-scenes stories of celebrities who have endured a major event that changed lives. The second season opens with an episode focused on Janet Hubert (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) followed by a second episode at 930p about American Idol winner Ruben Studdard. Both episodes repeat on Monday at midnight. K2 Pictures produces Life After for TV One.

The Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) made a deal with Comcast Corporation and NBC Universal involving independent programming opportunities on NBCU’s broadcast and cable networks and via Comcast Cable’s VOD and online platforms. The agreement, a summary of which has been filed with the FCC, provides further consideration for independently-produced scripted and unscripted reality programming aimed at primetime from both IFTA and non-IFTA members. Pending the finalization of the Comcast and NBCU joint venture, most of the NBCU commitments will be valid for four years starting June 1, 2011. The agreement also states a structure will be created to facilitate business between NBCU and qualifying independent producers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Comedy Central gave a series order for a new 10-episode series titled Jon Benjamin Has a Van. The sketch comedy series stars Jon Benjamin (Archer, Important Things with Demetri Martin) as an investigative reporter who takes to the streets in his custom van to offer his unique take on human interest stories. Production on the series begins this fall with a premiere date slated for summer 2011.

ESPN signed Erin Andrews to a new multi-year deal with the channel giving her added responsibilities including a contributing reporter role on ABC’s Good Morning America. Andrews will continue to report from the sidelines of college sports in addition to now joining the College GameDay program where she will anchor several segments during the first hour on ESPNU. College GameDay expands this season starting September 4 to three hours with the first hour on ESPNU at 9a with the latter two hours from 10a to noon on ESPN. Andrews will also contribute reports, interviews and features during the two-hour GameDay portion on ESPN. Furthermore, Andrews will become a regular contributing reporter on ABC’s Good Morning America, offering reports throughout the year.

After six seasons, Melina Kanakaredes is leaving the CBS drama CSI: NY from CBS TV Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer TV. The actresses’ contract was up and she chose to not return for a seventh season as Det. Stella Bonasera starring opposite Gary Sinise.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: UNIV ranked #1 Friday night with a 1.6/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV topped the competition at 8p with Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 1.8/7 with ABC’s Wife Swap placing second at 1.1/4. UNIV remained at #1 through 9p with Soy Tu Duena at 2.1/7 followed by ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? encore at 1.6/6. In the last hour, ABC’s 20/20 tied for first with NBC’s Dateline at 1.4/5 apiece while CBS’ second Flashpoint episode came next at 1.2/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Reality TV production company and licensing firm, Shevick*Zupon Entertainment officially launched yesterday and is headed by Jerry Shevick as President, Mark Zupon as CEO and Amy Shpall-Appel manages the company’s program development efforts.

Michael Winter was added at Initiative as VP/Group Account Director to spearhead digital business for The Home Depot account. Michael will be located in New York, reporting to Ben Winkler, SVP/Director Digital. Prior to this appointment, Michael was VP/Digital Group Director at Zenith Interactive/Moxie Interactive.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) tapped Nathalie Drouaire for a consultancy position to head the development of an English-language international co-financed drama slate. Nathalie’s role begins immediately. She will be based in France, reporting to David Ellender, Global CEO who is based in London.

Enrique Juarez was named VP/Sales Liaison, Latin America at NBC Universal International Television Distribution. Enrique will supervise the free, pay and basic cable television initiatives on behalf of NBCU programming through the Latin America region. Based in Miami, Enrique will report to Maria Sanchez, SVP/Sales Liaison, NBC Universal International Television Distribution.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. hired Judson Touby as Senior Producer for its new series America’s Court With Judge Ross. Judson will work closely with Supervising Producer, Jenny Hope.

Bob Mohler advances to SVP/Digital Media with Telepictures as announced by Hilary Estey McLoughlin, President, Telepictures Productions. Bob will continue to manage the digital operations for Telepictures and implement its digital efforts. He works in tandem with show producers to create online formats and new revenue outlets for the company’s television properties.

Brandon Riegg takes on new responsibility as VP/Alternative Programming and Development with NBC and Universal Media Studios. Brandon, who joins from ABC where he served as Executive Director/Alternative Series and Specials, will provide oversight for current alternative shows and development on new projects from pitch to premiere. He will report to Meredith Ahr, SVP/Alternative Programming and Development, NBC and Universal Media Studios.
