Making it official as of yesterday, Harry Smith moves to NBC News from CBS News to become a correspondent, effective July 18.  Smith will contribute reports to NBC’s upcoming primetime hour-long newsmagazine program anchored by Brian Williams.  Smith has been in the news industry for more than 30 years and hosted the CBS News morning shows The Early Show and the former CBS This Morning for 17 years.  Most recently, he was a senior correspondent for CBS News and a substitute anchor for CBS Evening News, Face the Nation and CBS News Sunday Morning.

New unscripted series Picker Sisters opens on Lifetime Television August 2 at 10p.  The series features best friends and well-known interior designers Tracy Hutson and Tanya McQueen as they journey across America scouting for rare articles and materials to transform for their Los Angeles-based decor shop.  The series is produced by RelativityREAL for Lifetime.

A new original real-life series shines a light on the dangers of feral hogs in Texas when A&E Network premieres American Hoggers on August 16 at 10p.  The Campbell family, led by Jerry, his son, Robert and daughter, Krystal help Texas residents and ranchers who encounter the destructiveness of wild boars.  The eight-episode half-hour series is produced by Thom Beers’ Original Productions, a Fremantle Media Company for A&E.

ABC Family renewed its original half-hour comedy series Melissa & Joey for a second season headlined by Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence.  Currently the series is in its first season with 18 episodes airing this summer and fall.  The upcoming sophomore season will debut in 2012.

Culinary competition series, The Great Food Truck Race gears up for a new second season on Food Network starting August 14 at 10p following the finale of Food Network Star.  Tyler Florence hosts the series where eight top food trucks in the US compete for a grand prize of $100,000.  The food trucks spend one weekend in each city featured, selling from their mobile kitchens as well as competing in various challenges.  Special guest stars during the sophomore season include Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts and NFL Hall of Famer John Elway. After The Great Food Truck Race debuts, the show will move to its regular time period of Sundays at 9p.

Professional matchmaker Patti Stanger stars in a fifth season of docu-series The Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo, beginning August 18 at 9p.  Patti herself is newly single and ready to date as the new season fires up while clients need her help.  Patti additionally enlists advice from celebrities Tori Spelling and Jenny McCarthy for her love-challenged millionaires.  The series is from Intuitive Entertainment, LLC for Bravo.

Crown Media Holdings, Inc. said it has taken on the new umbrella name of Crown Media Family Networks encompassing Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.  The name change denotes a move to strengthen the company’s position as a provider of family friendly entertainment and for brand identity.

Reality-based cable network, Halogen TV launches three original primetime series this fall corresponding with the network’s two year anniversary:

  • Roadworthy:  The Invisible Children Tour – Docu-reality series follows a group of young adults as they volunteer for the Invisible Children charity focused on the plight of impoverished children of Uganda.  Produced by Tyler Garnett, the 10-part series premieres September 26 at 9p.
