CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

07/12/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, July 12, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox has announced Fall start dates for much of its schedule, and the first thing you’ll notice is with just a couple of exceptions, they are not waiting until after the World Series this year.  Beginning after the World Series is always tough as the network was launching its new series in the face of the November sweep. The major exception to the pre-World Series launch is That 70’s Show. Here are Fox’s launch dates as of right now:
August 29:  Prison Break at 8p (preview airing, show airs then on Mondays at 9p as of 9/5)
Sept 8:  The O.C. at 8p, The Reunion at 9p
Sept 10:  Cops, Cops, AMW
Sept 11:  Sunday night launches (with the exception of King of the Hill)
Sept 13:  Bones, House
Sept 14:  Head Cases at 9p
Sept 17:  MadTV
Sept 18:  King of the Hill
Sept 19:  Arrested Development, Kitchen Confidential
Sept 23:  The Bernie Mac Show, Malcolm in the Middle, Killer Instinct

A New York civil court judge has ruled in favor of Time Warner Cable, saying that cable network AMC had violated its deal with Time Warner when it revamped its program lineup from classic films to a broader and more current lineup of films.  A spokesperson for Rainbow Media, owner of AMC, said the company plans to file its appeal immediately. According to the suit, when Time Warner reupped their deal over a decade ago, AMC’s programming had consisted primarily of classic black and white movies.  In the last few years, AMC has updated its movie library, and according to the judge’s decision, increased its “post-1960 movies” so that those films represent 81.1% of the channel’s movie slate, whereas and black and white films now represents just 14.8% of the program slate.  In all reports, no one expects Time Warner to remove AMC from its systems (which covers approx 11 million of AMC’s 87 million subscribers), but do expect to see a re-negotiation.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Nick at Nite is getting some new Friends beginning in 2011 in a shared deal with TBS.  According to Variety, the Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution off-net series has been licensed to Nick at Nite for approx $500k per ep (total of 236 episodes) plus 1-1/2 minutes of barter time,  to carry the show in the evenings thru 2017. Meanwhile, TBS has renewed their deal which will extend their current contract for the same 6-year time frame and as a result of only being able to air the show before 6pm, will pay only $275k per ep, with no barter.

Time Warner Cable Systems will begin carrying TBS On Demand and TNT On Demand on several of their systems including Austin, Binghamton, Charlotte, LA, El Paso/Rio Grande, and Syracuse.  TBS and TNT will each provide 8-10 hours of programming – TBS shorts and highlights from current and upcoming TBS original programming and original movies; TNT On Demand will feature TNT original movies and series.

Comedy Central has acquired the cable rights to off net series Scrubs, beginning in Fall 2005 and distributed by Buena Vista Television.  The package includes 93 episodes, as well as any additional seasons including the upcoming fifth season.

Lifetime has picked up The Golden Palace and will add it to the schedule in early/late fringe beginning August 1. The Golden Palace picks up where The Golden Girls left off.

MTV Networks launches MTV Desi, a network targeted to young people with South Asian heritage and interests living in the US. The network launches tonight on DirecTV at 9p.  The network will be added to DirecTV’s monthly subscription HindiDirect programming package. MTV Desi is the first MTV World channel to launch and MTVN anticipates launching MTV Chi (for young Chinese-Americans) and MTV K (for young Korean-Americans) later this year.  Regular shows include a mix of original US programming as well as shows from MTV India.
