Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 10, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The 2012 Gentlemen’s Wimbledon Championships saw a rating spike for ESPN, with a boost of 39% for the final compared to 2011, according to Nielsen. Coverage of the Federer victory over Andy Murray delivered a 2.5 total US rating, and marked the network’s best tennis rating in history for the event. Overall, coverage of the tournament matched last year’s score on NBC/ESPN2 with a 0.7 score, with Men 18-34 up 37%, Men 18-49 up 37%, and Men 25-54 up 28%.

On the Air

The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona Powered by Coca-Cola sizzled for TNT as well as truTV, which offered the first-ever simulcast of the NASCAR race, generating a 3.8 score with over 6.1 million total viewers to rank as the highest-rated and most-viewed Daytona 400 since 2008. Saturday’s prime-time coverage was up 12% compared with last year’s 3.4 U.S. HH rating and 3% over the average of 6,029,000 total viewers in 2011. Top markets included: Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, S.C. with a 9.3 rating, followed by Charlotte (9.2); Greensboro, N.C. (9.2); Indianapolis (8.6) and Birmingham, Ala. (7.4).

A playoff at the Greenbrier Classic helped boost CBS’ coverage of the PGA Tour tournament, with a final round overnight rating of 2.1, up 40% over 2011 numbers.

FUEL TV announced plans for four upcoming live shows centered around UFC on FUEL TV: Munoz vs. Weidman, with the action starting tonight off from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California at 7p with the live UFC Weigh-in on FUEL TV, hosted by Jay Glazer. For the first time since his title bout loss at UFC 148, UFC Middleweight Chael Sonnen joins Glazer, offering analysis. Ariel Helwani will conduct fighter interviews. Fight Night then starts on Wednesday at 5:45p with five preliminary bouts on FUEL’s website, followed by the UFC Prefight Show on FUEL TV at 7p. UFC Fight Night on FUEL TV officially kicks off at 8p with Jon Anik and Kenny Florian announcing the six main card fights live from The HP Pavilion.

Meanwhile, UFC reports that UFC 148, headlined by Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, drew an announced crowd of 15,016 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with a live gate of nearly $7 million, which would set a record for the organization’s event in the US.

MLB Network is marking the ten-year anniversary of the passing of former St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies pitcher Darryl Kile on Thursday at 9p with The Life and Death of Darryl Kile. The hour-long documentary will be narrated by Bob Costas and review his career and reputation before he died of a heart attack prior to a game between the Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on June 22, 2002.

NBA Digital unveiled plans for the 2012 NBA Summer League with 56 live games in 14 days available on NBA TV, NBA.com and NBA Mobile from July 9-22. NBA TV will regularly televise four games a day beginning Monday, July 9, with the Nets/Magic followed by the Thunder/Celtics. In Orlando, Rick Kamla and Vince Cellini will share play-by-play responsibilities with analysts Dennis Scott and Kendall Gill. From Las Vegas, Matt Winer, Joel Meyers, Kevin Calabro, Kamla and Cellini will each provide play-by-play for select games with analysts that include Steve Kerr, Reggie Miller, Greg Anthony, Chris Webber, Steve Smith, Scott, Brent Barry, Sam Mitchell, Rick Mahorn and Gillas well as reporters Jared Greenberg and Rob Nice.

On the local front, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will live coverage and primetime encores of three Washington Wizards games during the 2012 NBA Summer League from Las Vegas spanning July 13-18. The slate starts on July 13 at 4p.

Head & Shoulders announced the kick-off of the “Mane Man Challenge,” a virtual competition between some of the MLB All Stars. Nick Swisher, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Dennis Eckersley will take part via the Head & Shoulders for Men Facebook page to pit the players in “hilarious, hair-raising challenge” to prove that a healthy hair and scalp equates great performance. 

Digital Fields

ESPN announced that ESPN3 and WatchESPN logged 1.1 billion minutes through computers, smartphones, tablets and Xbox to mark its best month ever. They also logged an average minute audience of 24,467 across platforms, up 452% compared to the same month last year on computers. In addition, the WatchESPN app for smartphones and tablets surpassed 10 million downloads.

BTN announced that BTN2Go, the mobile extension of BTN has now been made now available for Android users. The service is one of two nationally distributed TV Everywhere sports services, and has been available on the internet, iPad and iPhone platforms since last fall.
